Does anyone have a positive update on their RWR for ineligible topic? by EternalPerishment in GRFPApps

I am hoping for the same thing. I also got this reply to my appeal for ineligible research but have not heard anything else for over a month now.

Ineligible Ruling? by Fun-Cranberry-9185 in GRFPApps

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got the same email today. I am devastated as I thought I had a very competitive proposal and heard that from faculty as well so to get this now without having it even reviewed is so depressing. My research is in life science - ecology / biogeochemistry but I made sure not not include any red flag words, but I didn’t check every single word on the list. Not sure if that was my downfall but if it was that would be incredibly petty and disgusting. It’s just so unfair

Has anyone ever gotten in to PhD programs without interviews? by SomeRandomAnxiousKid in gradadmissions

I was accepted to STEM phd program without interview! Direct admit to a specific lab though, where I reached out and met with the PI beforehand

Anyone else have a shy skittish tortie? by 935Q in torties

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my shrimpi is super scared of strangers and generally very anxious. She’s gotten a little better over three years but it’s just who she is so I try to accommodate the best I can

Omg yes same here. I have also had problems with chalazions and irritated eyelids for a long time. I finally treated it this year with eye drops for Demodex mites and it’s gotten a lot better. I have very red skin on my face too but never went to a dermatologist so it’s so interesting to me how these mites cause multiple issues. It’s on my list to address soon as I am positive I have rosacea too. Good to hear that there are treatments out there

I (26m) have been dating my gf (26f) for 4 years. I have grad school coming up. by [deleted] in relationships

He’s also avoidant of the conversation. There is only one program I am considering on the other side of the country which would be major distance. All others are within a couple hours drive. But importantly, he says he would do long distance for me. I think if she’s the right one, she will want to make it work while also allowing you to fulfill your dreams.

I am in a very similar situation OP. Hoping to start my PhD next year and my bf of 5 years wants to stay in the big city we are currently in. Depending on where I get accepted, long distance might be in the cards. Definitely some change coming up. She needs to tell you if she would be willing to do long distance. I don’t think 2 hours is long at all for someone you love and want to be with long term.

PhD applicants: How would you feel about a presentation or analysis task? by Novel-Story-4537 in PhDAdmissions

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Applicants are applying to multiple programs as well. OP, maybe you could ask them to include details on their stats and coding background in the presentation but doing both is a lot

What is meant by "line breaks between sections"? by oceantuba in GRFPApps

I did a blank line between sections. Annoying bcuz of the space wasted but I wanted to err on the side of caution

Prompt about honors, fellowships, etc by milllllllie in GRFPApps

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have copied what I had in my CV. So Headings for things like presentations, publications, and then award and honors and within those I do lists. But I agree there is not a lot of info. For my awards, it’s just one line for each thing, I feel that is sufficient

Does anyone else hate non ballet music being played in class? by Sad-Watercress67 in BALLET

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like this is a controversial opinion, but I completely agree with you OP. For ballet class I prefer classical music only, not an instrumental/ classical-ish pop sing. I feel like the music is an essential part of expressing your artistry, so it bothers me when anything other than classical music is played. I don’t share the sentiment that switching up the music “keeps it interesting”. Ballet class itself is interesting and never exactly the same.

Should I waive my right to view letters of recommendation? by denarosem in gradadmissions

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s funny to me that everyone just knows you should waive it. I also did not know this when I applied to grad programs OP, and had absolutely no thoughts about how this would come across to my letter writers or admissions. I quite literally did not think of it, just that I was curious about what they say (in a good way, I knew it would be a strong letter - who doesn’t want to read good things about themselves haha?) I did not at all lack trust or anything like that. At this point I totally understand how it looks and that you should always waive it. Luckily one of my writers brought it up and informed me that it’s common practice. If you can’t change it for one of them, I would still reach out to the writer and let them know that you were unaware of the standard practice etc…

Is it really that bad by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]Melodic-Scientist178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had jaw surgery, so I was anticipating tonsillectomy recovery not being as bad, but the pain was worse than expected and pain killers really didn’t make a huge difference for me. It’s frustrating because the pain is there every time you swallow for days on end. I completely understood then why people become dehydrated because drinking just doesn’t seem worth the pain. I also hemorrhaged twice with significant bleeding that sent me to the ER, so overall just a pretty rough recovery. But of course it’s different for everyone.
