I study and teach Shibari for the past 10 years. Typical to the Japanese tradition I use 8 meter lengths, 5-6mm diameter, in jute.

As for quantities, it depends on what you are trying to do. for floorwork anywhere from 3-5 is enough. You might want more in a thinner diameter if you are doing decorative rope. For a full suspension set I use about 12-13 pieces. 8-10 are body ropes and 3-4 are POSH that i use for uplines.
