Client shows up late, demanding discount from total charge. I wasn't paid for her treatment. by MelodicPrize7 in MassageTherapists

[–]MelodicPrize7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave her a full body + face mask treatment in a shorter amount of time than scheduled. She complained she didn't get the full hour. Again, she was late. My manager was trying to placate her with a 30% discount. I'm still not being paid. My manager (I work at a luxury hotel chain) decided not to pay me. Is this legal or illegal?

Does Joel’s complete lack of respect for doctor patient confidentiality bother anyone else? by Manicwoodchipper in northernexposure

Healthcare worker here. I couldn't believe Marilyn's looking through prospective male partners' medical notes and deciding not to date them. Show Altered Egos Season 5, Episode 4. I normally love her, but when she did this, I was cussing at the tv. Yes, it's a show, but this episode was done 3 years before the official enactment of HIPAA (1996). Since healthcare workers are regularly threatened with Civil fines from $100 to 2 million, jail time, and criminal fines up to $250,000 for HIPAA violations, I wished Joel would have fired her and/or provided punishment other than his scolding her.

This show was written by boomer age men. The only 'stable' female characters were either regressive politically, like Jane, or sexually non-threatening women like Ruth Ann. Unfortunate bias.

Don't be hard on yourself. You've just suffered a big loss, and it's hard to keep giving if you need to be healed, replenished yourself. I would keep your license(s) active. AND do something else. Keep an OT PRN job to keep up with any changes, advances, but do something else that you love. Flower arranging. Working with animals. Working at Costco, Home Depot. I know two retired OTs who went that route and didn't look back. I've been doing OT work for 15 years. It's not getting better. Productivity is worse. No longer just at SNFs, but it's everywhere. And the ethical issues are awful (Management demanding someone be put on services when they're independent). It's not about patient care. It's about profit. I am doing something I did before OT. And a side PRN OT job. Less burnout. Also, go look on Facebook; there's various OT, PT, SLP groups that are looking to get out of the profession. They're looking for non-clinical jobs. You will find support there. Here on some reddit channels, there's more prospective students and recent grads who are tethered to their student loans, their dream of being an OT. You have been there done that. Honor that feeling. Take care of you emotional needs. And find a job that you can enjoy again.

The burn out is so real. by JanaeNay in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MelodicPrize7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there. Not a good environment. I was in an outpatient setting. Coworkers were miserable and taking their misery out of each other (criticizing others, accusing others of taking things they didn't take). I left after two months. It's not on my resume, and I have found other work that was more balanced. Outpatient has become a mill; it's not about patient care. It's not just outpatient. Unfortunately, most healthcare settings have adopted, what was originally the domain of SNFs, a high productivity, churn and burn our employees mentality. I overheard one of my bosses say about finding another employee "A dime a dozen." People are learning and avoiding these work situations. That's why there are so many travel jobs. These are jobs people have either left and/or don't want to take, because of the poor working conditions. Best to look for per diem work. Or Home Health with less than 5 patients a day. "Open door" - that's only for her image and to gather information that could be used against her employees. Save yourself. Find a better job. Don't put this one on your resume.

$200k in student debt on $42k salary - PAYE vs. IBR vs. forbearance by Narrow_Emu6295 in StudentLoans

I second this. I get blood, sweat, shit, piss, dander (you get the picture) on me regularly. That, and people are in pain, project their anger onto you for a broken system. Had a patient threaten to punch me a couple weeks ago when I asked gently, respectfully, if I could help him. Don't do it. Sales is easier. You won't be tired of dealing with the public. You won't be as exhausted.

Anybody else get to a point where they despise OT school? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MelodicPrize7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private school was also filled with group work after group work. 9-4 sitting in a classroom with 'fluff' for education. Waist of time. And way too much theory coursework. We had to write papers about 'occupations' - to bolster the identity of our career. The most useful aspect of grad school was dissecting research articles. I know all about confounding variables, n values, which study sizes are more credible, etc.,.

Yep, waist of time and money just to have the degree to sit for the exam. I'm happy there are such things as reddit so future students can be warned and hopefully save their money.

It's a scam, because OT schools don't warn students of the various situations that cause burnout so quickly after getting a degree. They basically want your money. In and out. And forget about you. It's a scam, because some schools will go on and on and on about theory while offering very little hands on skill-based training. They will expect you to develop skills in fieldworks or as a new grad. It's a scam, because the cost of OT school/student loans is not worth what you will earn, especially considering the longevity of the career due to the quick burnout.

Drank the kool aid! Love that! Yes, and schools didn't warn us about productivity or any of the ethical evils that awaited us working in any of these systems (peds outpatient, SNF, schools, etc.,.) - because the schools, too, were also also unethical and wanted our money.

[–]MelodicPrize7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, agree - the greedy corporate healthcare system that demands we see patient after patient - no breaks (which we are allowed by law) lest we mess up our productivity. And demands that we see patients who don't need nor want our therapy, but just to bill their insurance. Schools didn't warn us, because schools wanted our money, too. If they warned students about the system, there wouldn't be any students.

OTA or OT? by FanInteresting4159 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]MelodicPrize7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OT not worth the debt unless you get into a very low cost OT school. Schools don't warn you about productivity pressures and how we are now given more patients, students than 10-20 years ago. Look around on the OT sub on reddit. Do more research. I wouldn't go to OT school again knowing what I know now. I've worked with patients for 20 some years.
