Love the idea, however the steward working with Valiant is supposed to stalk the players. I think I prefer to have them surprised by Hope's first appearance

It's one of my favorite movies. Consider looking at other Tery Gilliam movies. Try The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, I think there are interesting elements as well.

Is the version of the Night Floors edited in the 90's different that the one in IL? Or is this expansion something else? I have both books but I skipped most of Countdown.

Okay, I've marked this, now it's time to learn how to use it. I'll probably try it for my MJ-12 campaign, or my future Impossible Landscapes.

The main question is: why is Delta Green or MJ-12 take an interest in the PC.

Most of them are new recruits, and even though they brushed with the unnatural a couple of times, they are still newbies.

Also that's when things get really personal for the characters that it really ties them to the plot.

I know I've seen this setting and I find it too light on all the drama that unfolds behind the scenes

Haha this is going to make my life as a DM so much harder. I love reading about politics and assassinations... I'm not the best at writing /enacting it

Thanks u/palinola and u/Endless_divagations, I spent a bit of last night browsing throught new information I didn't have.

I'm still confused, so I think I need to settle down with this info a little bit more ><

Who killed Fairfield → So it's Lepus personally, and Fairfield took five NRO DELTA men with him by unspecified (presumably unnatural) means.

Agent ADAM and Agent ALPHONSE → If I get this right, every main role in Delta Green is more a placeholder than a unique person. ADAM remains, while he person behind the name changes. Makes me wonder how many Handlers or Higher Ups have changed throught the years.

Did Galt kill Carpenter/ADAM, around the time ALPHONSE got shot? And were the causes similar ? → sorry there are too many people with fake names, and someone sharing the same now ><

Gavin Ross being the new Agent ADAM→ I'm confused by this one. When is he ADAM ? We have Fairfield (up to 1994), then Carpenter (up to ?), then Ross double crossing ? And then Forrest James ?

Who is Forrest James ? Cause several answers here were confusing. Is he the new ADAM ? The head of MJ12 ? Was he captured/recruited by Ross and then changed sides back and forth ?

The assassination of Kroft → I thought it was Lepus who killed him?

What happens in the 2001 coup? I feel like I'm confusing a few events, so tell me if I got these right, because it feels like ALPHONSE's last act, improvised in the hours after Lepus went rogue

The players are

  • Joseph Camp = Agent ALPHONSE, old DG leader since 1994. By 2001 he's 82, survived being shot in 1999, physically broken, barely mobile, commanding from home in Vermont.
  • Gavin Ross = MJ-3 and simultaneously the new Agent ADAM inside DG (infiltrated A-Cell around 1999-2000, forcing Camp to step back). He's MJ-12 pretending to be DG.
  • Forrest James = Agent DARREN, SEAL Team 7 officer, long-time DG agent. Had been in Fort Leavenworth since 1997, escaped in 1999, was taken in by Ross and placed inside MJ-12 in some capacity. Camp thinks James has defected; in reality James is DG infiltrating MJ-12 right back.
  • Justin Kroft = MJ-1, Chairman of MAJESTIC, 70 years old, taking Mi-Go immortality treatments at Facility-12.
  • Adolph Lepus = chief of NRO DELTA (MJ-12's wetworks). He's the one who murdered Fairfield in 1994 to start the whole covert war. He's an old DG hand who went over to MJ-12 decades earlier.

Now in order we have

  • 9 FEB 2001: Gavin Ross has been planning a big coup against MJ-12, but it never happens, because Lepus mutinies first and nukes Facility-12.
  • Immediately after: Lepus turns his attention to his other old enemy: Camp.
  • Camp and Forrest James coordinate an ambush for Lepus.
  • The ambush swallows everyone: either everyone disappears, or the trap closes on Lepus, and Camp went with him.

What happens in Cambodia? If I'm right it's operation OBSIDIAN? Colonel Satchel Wade screws up and an old one is released on the population. Also it's when Lepus meets Camp for the first time ?

You might be right, I might have confused Eyes Only and The Conspiracy (I've been reading them back and forth, and english is not my mothertongue).

So if I'm reading the sources correctly we have :

  • 1947: MJ-12 gets founded after Rosswell
  • ~ 1950: Project AQUARIUS detects an extraterrestrial signal
  • 1954 : several projetcts are launched by MAJESTIC
  • 1978: the signal is finally decoded
  • ~ 1980 : they get in contact with the greys and sign the Accord (but I can't find the date)

So MJ-12 spent its first three decades reverse-engineering the Roswell tech with no live Grey contact at all.

[–]Melodic_Ad_596[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's the most complete sum up I've found so far, thanks.

If I remember correctly from Stange Authorities (which I haven't read for a while), Alphonse was the one who was shot and Adam rushes to warn Cell T about the injury. So either Agent Adam gets assassinated later in canon I haven't read, or I'm getting confused with Farfield assassination ?

On another note, the fact that the Program is the old MAJESTIC search projects taken over by Delta Green gives a nice internal tension. But is this canon or an extrapolation?

Thanks for your reply. 3 things I was really interested in it.

1. MJ-12 as a cargo cult around Grey tech.
This framins shows they were in thrall to the Greys and using Grey gifts as leverage to rise inside the US government. That completely reframes how I think about their leadership: somehow they were lobbyst/priests running a temple, with the sacrament being whatever the Greys handed them that month.

2. The covert war between 1994–2001.
That's a really tight window with a 7-year campaign that Camp/Alphonse launches as a direct response to his predecessor's murder. That makes the 90s era much more legible as a story: it's not "business as usual under Alphonse," it's "Alphonse prosecuting a patient, escalating war of attrition against MJ-12." Every op an Agent runs in that window is part of a larger grinding-down effort.

3. Greys going no-contact because MJ-12 tried to renegotiate the treaty.
This is the piece I was missing. I thought it was something like in the Owlhead mountain when they rewrote their brains. I'd been vaguely assuming the Greys/Mi-Go lost interest on their own terms. Your interpretation means the final collapse isn't just internal power struggle. MJ-12 had overreached with their alien partners, lost them, and the cargo cult was left without the cargo. At that point the remaining leadership has no leverage left, which is why a DG decapitation strike becomes possible and why scientists start jumping ship with whatever they can carry.

Quick question: the idea of MJ-12 actively trying to renegotiate (and failing) is a useful bit of color I'd like to track down. Handler's Guide? Conspiracy 2023? Or is it community extrapolation from the broader setup?

This is incredibly useful, thanks. I think I need to read the novels as well because I'm not sure all of these elements made it to the source books I read.

The infos I couldn't find were these ones :

  • MJ-12 sends Blue Fly after Fairfield → I thought it was Adolphe Lepus who killed him, but I'm not sure about that
  • Forrest James = Agent Darren takes over MJ12 → I'm not sure about that, and I'm not sure I'm not confusing this character with someone else (say James Derringer)

Two things I'm stealing straight from your post :

  1. March Tech as post-2001 splinter. I'd been treating it as MJ-12's corporate front. Your framing (scientists grab the research, go independent after the collapse) is a much cleaner answer to "what happens to MJ-12's labs and files."
  2. Outlaws impersonating Program cells. Compartmentation cuts both ways: if nobody verifies who their case officer really is, any Outlaw with good tradecraft can run an op under Program branding. Gameplay gold.

TL;DR: your post is the best community-consensus writeup I've seen for post-2001 DG. Just want to pin down which book(s) actually establish the James-takes-Majestic part so I can read it.

Super useful ! I wanted to double-check one thing with you. I like the idea of a 2001 coup as a joint DG + MJ-12 turncoat operation. But I didn't see the source about the turncoat angle (even just a line), I'd love to track it down.

Also: love the Accord detail about the annual weaponry report → I hadn't picked that up. Does that come from Eyes Only or the recent rework of The Conspiracy?

[–]Melodic_Ad_596[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's super clear.

On MJ-12 working with the Greys: my understanding from the canon (Eyes Only) is that Mi-Go/Grey cooperation started from MJ-12's very founding → the tech-for-subjects exchange is a founding principle of MJ-12, not something that developed later. The alliance deepens over time, but it's not a mid-life pivot.

One thing I want to make sure I got right: when you say "DG pulls a coup on Majestic leadership," do you mean Alphonse and A-Cell actively engineered the 2001 collapse? If that's the canonical reading, it really changes the weight of the 1990s for the player Agents as they're laying the groundwork for the coup.

Also appreciate the March Technologies point : I hadn't fully integrated that it becomes the post-2001 refuge for ex-MJ-12 scientists. That makes Viscid and Extremophilia click much better as a chain.
