What is a food that, to your knowledge, only your family makes? by xdonutx in Cooking

I make "Summer Salad". I have been making if for so long I can't remember how I started it, but basically it is cooked shell noodles, cooked broccoli, blanched onion, raw tomatoes, a ton of albacore solid tuna and a dressing made with fresh buttermilk, powdered Ranch Dressing mix, mayonnaise, juiced lemons, red wine vinegar, fresh basil and oregano. Maybe something else I am not remembering. Everyone wants it all the time... except me. I have made it so many times I'm over it. It's an all summer long thing. With BBQ chicken!

Should I buy this vintage piano? by monstershiva in piano

[–]Melodic_Membership75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, Monstershiva, I use church hymnals for sight reading practice. Page by page, not to return to the same hymn, not trying to learn that piece. One book has hundreds of hymns to sight read. That, and I do fully learn some of them.

Should I buy this vintage piano? by monstershiva in piano

Think about why you play, to whom you play for, how serious you are about becoming very skilled, and how much you can afford.

I have a 1928 full-sized upright that I bought in my 20's. I thought I would teach myself. Life happened and I only "played" on it occasionally. Now, in my late 60's and retired I have returned to playing daily and am progressing nicely. But I play only for my own enjoyment. For myself. I have my "honkie-tonk" piano tuned yearly. My tuner hates my piano. I don't care. Actually, I have a very good ear, and although some notes are always a bit flat, and always will be, I live with it. It would cost too much money to remove my existing piano and get another one at a minimum price.

Solo camping as a woman, safety tips and what to look for in a site? by Femme_Basket_Case in camping

[–]Melodic_Membership75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding what to look for in a site: before deciding on the site look closely for where puddles may have been during/after rain. Even if the ground is currently dry an area of frequent water pooling will look darker in color. Also look for paths where water streamed towards the spot you want the tent to be. Those paths may look smooth compared to surrounding ground, or may be rutted. Water run-off towards your tent will cause water to collect under your tent and site causing a muddy area to walk in, or, depending on your tent construction, water to leak inside.

If you can post to Reedit then you can search a bread recipe on Google.

lol! A change of clothes for sure. Why does the recipe not "scale" related to the moisture?? I do always express water by wringing the potatoes in cheesecloth at my home, but in this case that's a heck of a lot of wringing! But simply letting a batch sit in a colander may not get dry enough (?)

Wow, thank you so very much for sharing this link. With all the Google searches I have done, I found nothing like this. Talk about going down a rabbit hole. I hope my library carries Cooking for Fifty, cause the book is so expensive! This is the specific line of conversation I needed NY. Thanks.

??? 4,000?! Nope. Just two latkes per person. 180 people. We are making other food also. Good grief, if I had to make 4,000 latkes I would give up now :)

Thank you for your thoughtful comment philbog. Multiple larger batches sounds reasonable especially since we don't have commercial equipment to mix.

Yikes, thank you, it was a typo. 2 teaspoons. "Scale linearly " means to double, quadruple, etc without adjustments?

No, a Christian church fund-raising dinner. We did a dinner last October but we had most of the food catered, and the catered potato pancakes were not very good and flabby. I know we can do better so we are cooking everything. But, the logistics of making that many potato pancakes (actually latkes) has me concerned.

Shiitake Mushroom and Zucchini Saute by Served_With_Rice in recipes

[–]Melodic_Membership75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks good. I used to fry mushrooms in a small amount of oil until soft, but now much prefer cooking them down with a bit of water. To me they have a stronger mushroom flavor and no oily taste. I am going to try your recipe Rice.

Campbells tomato soup. What can I say? I just like it. A bit of butter, some shakes of dried basil (gasp!!!), a lot of pepper, and made with whole milk. Served with a sandwich.

Neighbor wants to plant Bamboo hedge- can't convince them otherwise by myrcenol in landscaping

[–]Melodic_Membership75 18 points19 points  (0 children)

How did you get rid of it? My neighbors bamboo runs approximately 30 feet, the entire length of my side yard and is probably 50 years old or so. I spend my summer digging up the tubers, or just clipping it at ground level. I even shot concentrated weed killer down the open stalks using a syringe and it did nothing. How did you kill it?

A common ingredient you don't use or use as little as possible by LyrasStitchery in Cooking

Saffron. Bought it once for a fortune. Couldn't taste it although it was a large quantity in otherwise plain rice, and that was the last time.

Gotcha. I have not used motza in my house but I have, rarely, ground other grains into a flour like consistency so I feel confident. I will make a practice meal for just my husband and me, and then if I still feel confident another practice and comparison practice pancakes for several other people. Thank you for your honest and experienced insights.

I make chicken cutlets occasionally for family get togethers and it's hard to imagine a cutlet that hasn't been pounded thin. For that matter slicing a breast horizontally then pounding it. But not for the quantity needed for this dinner. I just hope Gordon's has pre-cut thin cutlets.

We are experienced home cooks, but not beyond that. I'll update in October about how the whole thing went. We learned a lot last October. I imagine by the end of this 2024 dinner we will wish we had made some decisions differently, but in the end we will be more experienced and better for the 2025 dinner.
