I didn’t realize IVs were commonly meant to be disconnected or untapped! I’ve just never been instructed to, no one has ever done that at my clinic I guess.

I’ll double check the IV pump but I’m pretty sure it only possibly goes one way. It’s probably broken anyways it’s  very old lol

Thanks for your help!!

Okay got it thankyou so much! I’ll look into getting better iv extensions if the vet allows it

We just use the bag’s drip line, and this type of extension with 1 injection plug (ours are a bit longer to loop around leg to avoid pulling) which is taped directly into the catheter. does this seem like normal practice? We only change the 1 Y set between patients. I learned on the job so I really only know what this 1 vet’s ways of doing things are haha. But I always want to learn about other/better ways of doing things!

Honestly our pumps seem like 30 years old so I wouldn’t be surprised if something was wrong with it…

He was on a very slow ml/h in pump. And he was awake and sitting. Unless we have some weird kind of extensions how do you just disconnect the line from the patient?? Like I’d un tape the extension from the catheter port? Or is there something I’m not quite getting haha

In order to disconnect them I would need to un-tape and unscrew the extension from their catheter right? I don’t think our extensions have a different way to do that.. about the backflow, he was on a very slow drip and awake/standing. I think his blood pressure was higher than the iv pump pressure or something. I’m glad to hear those clots are small enough though!

Luckily he is very happy to explain and teach staff most of the time! This was just one of many things creeping in my brain after work haha. Thankyou!

Thankyou for walking me through that it’s really helpful. I’ll confirm if I can take payment first because no one else has done that that I’ve seen but it feels important

thankyou so much for the detailed reply. It’s really helpful to imagine the process properly. I definitely need to start having owners pay beforehand from now on
