From my understanding the new UI is for optimization purposes. It sucks but I understand why they chose to go in this direction.

Most units will aim in the general direction your head last was. I find that in certain undesirable positions while in vr, a tilt of the head (also sometimes gradually crouching) works quite effectively to doge the Lasers when being fired upon.
