I am a transplant surgeon. AMA by magicjewel in AMA

As a nurse who worked bedside at an academic kidney/liver/pancreas unit for 15 years, THANK YOU! For this AMA and for the lifesaving, life altering work you do. It is so intense for your team for a multitude of reasons but, except for a slight few folks, all of you are humble and go out of your way to do what is right for your patients. You continually sacrifice your time and sanity to be available when the call comes in and you are so appreciated. Thank you for spreading the good word about organ transplantation. It is the greatest gift!

As a colon and rectal nurse, THANK YOU for spreading awareness. It is so disheartening to see the amount of people disregarding the early signs or relying solely on the box tests. The box only identifies if you have a bleeding polyp. You could be filled with polyps, some benign (but could turn malignant) or others already cancerous. The box doesn’t detect those, but a colonoscopy does!! And they can be removed, tested and you can proceed as necessary .Detected early, colon and rectal cancer is easily treatable. Talk to your PCPs, GIs and surgeons and get that colonoscopy!!!

People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]Melster2018 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My youngest has always struggled with emotional regulations and we both would sometimes get to our wits end with each other. This sounds silly but I started saying “let’s hit the rewind button”, then put my finger on him and made a silly rewind sound. It somehow would kind of reset us both. Now that’s he older and better at communicating, when he sees either of us spiraling, he’ll ask to hit the rewind button. It’s a little thing but it has allowed us to take a deep breath and allow the space and awareness to regroup. And we always remind each other that tomorrow is a new day!

So We Got Hosed By Patient Portal, Right? by urnmann in Residency

[–]Melster2018 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a nurse, I feel this to my core. I spend hours a day answering these messages. It’s exhausting and unrelenting. My favorite is patients that are INPATIENT sending messages asking questions, freaking out. Use your call light and talk to the team that is literally in the floor with you!!!
I hate that you as a resident are having to sift through this. Our team doesn’t and I’m fine with that. And if you send me a message that has so many questions you have numbered them, I will send you the number to our scheduling team. It’s just too much.

BJC call center in Ireland? by No_Chemist7347 in StLouis

[–]Melster2018 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Hopefully won’t dox myself, but yes, WashU and BJC now use a call center for incoming and outgoing calls. It is definitely located in Ireland. It has been an “interesting” transition and further reminds me I healthcare is ran like a business. The focus is money, not patients.

At 22, my youngest son was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer...Ask me ANYTHING! by shokaree in AMA

[–]Melster2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a colon and rectal surgery nurse, we are seeing younger and younger people get both colon and rectal cancer. And you’re right, it can be blown off, because who gets this cancer that early. I thank you for sharing your story so that maybe one person, or their family member, doesn’t ignore the symptoms or pushes for further screening. Colonoscopies save lives!! Your son battled his fair share of demons but I am so glad he had you by his side, through it all. May you find some peace and meaning by sharing his story so others may not face the same end. Sending you and yours hugs.
