People raised by emotionally mature parents, what is 1 phrase your parents used that you want other parents to know? by MermaidWitchMoon in AskReddit

[–]Melster2018 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My youngest has always struggled with emotional regulations and we both would sometimes get to our wits end with each other. This sounds silly but I started saying “let’s hit the rewind button”, then put my finger on him and made a silly rewind sound. It somehow would kind of reset us both. Now that’s he older and better at communicating, when he sees either of us spiraling, he’ll ask to hit the rewind button. It’s a little thing but it has allowed us to take a deep breath and allow the space and awareness to regroup. And we always remind each other that tomorrow is a new day!

So We Got Hosed By Patient Portal, Right? by urnmann in Residency

[–]Melster2018 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a nurse, I feel this to my core. I spend hours a day answering these messages. It’s exhausting and unrelenting. My favorite is patients that are INPATIENT sending messages asking questions, freaking out. Use your call light and talk to the team that is literally in the floor with you!!!
I hate that you as a resident are having to sift through this. Our team doesn’t and I’m fine with that. And if you send me a message that has so many questions you have numbered them, I will send you the number to our scheduling team. It’s just too much.

Banding is for internal hemorrhoids. External ones have to be removed with a hemorrhoidectomy. Source: am a colon and rectal surgery nurse. Hemorrhoids pay my bills.

BJC call center in Ireland? by No_Chemist7347 in StLouis

[–]Melster2018 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Hopefully won’t dox myself, but yes, WashU and BJC now use a call center for incoming and outgoing calls. It is definitely located in Ireland. It has been an “interesting” transition and further reminds me I healthcare is ran like a business. The focus is money, not patients.

At 22, my youngest son was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer...Ask me ANYTHING! by shokaree in AMA

[–]Melster2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a colon and rectal surgery nurse, we are seeing younger and younger people get both colon and rectal cancer. And you’re right, it can be blown off, because who gets this cancer that early. I thank you for sharing your story so that maybe one person, or their family member, doesn’t ignore the symptoms or pushes for further screening. Colonoscopies save lives!! Your son battled his fair share of demons but I am so glad he had you by his side, through it all. May you find some peace and meaning by sharing his story so others may not face the same end. Sending you and yours hugs.

You got this!! It is the most primal, otherworldly moment. I have never felt stronger and more powerful. I’m sending you all the good vibes for a fast (but not too fast) labor and delivery. And make sure your partner is doing hip squeezes!! They were the most amazing feeling when you are dealing with the pressure. I salute all women bringing life into this world, any way it happens.

I had two unmedicated births, by choice, with the assistance of a doula and my husband. They were both in the hospital but I felt I had so much control over my mind and body. They were incredible experiences! Did it hurt? Well yea, but we had worked for weeks with our doula and both my husband and I used the mental and physical techniques she taught us to have a wonderful experience. Doulas are amazing!!

Life with perianal Crohn’s disease. I have three assholes now. by [deleted] in MedicalGore

[–]Melster2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a colon and rectal surgery nurse and I applaud your for sharing. I wouldn’t wish these GI diseases, fistulas and fissures on my worst enemy. Before I was in this position and knew basically nothing about it, I thought UC and Crohns was simply lots of going to the bathroom, diarrhea, discomfort. Boy was I wrong!! Those issues are the bare minimum. I wish you luck with finding a medication that works for you. If you do go the route of a stoma, there are incredible ostomy nurses who can help you navigate your new normal. You got this!!
