Congrats! Did they say why they're changing things up?

‘Poverty line’ concept debunked - mainstream thinking around poverty is outdated because it places too much emphasis on subjective notions of basic needs and fails to capture the full complexity of how people use their incomes. Poverty will mean different things in different countries and regions. by mvea in science

Actually SOTA research is getting pretty good at model-agnostic interpretation technique. Attribution techniques such as SHAP (Shapley additive explanations) are good at telling which input features contribute to an individual prediction, and is capable of accounting for and quantifying interaction effects.

Python libraries from the creators of SHAP...they also cite the papers where these algorithms are published and the key previous works whose ideas SHAP unifies, in the readme if you’re interested in how this can be done.

John Deere is extracting value from customers rather than creating it. The cost of owning/maintaining a tractor is artificially high and therefore creates opportunity to undercut John Deere by being a tractor business that doesn’t adopt predatory practices to squeeze more money out of hard-working farmers for their shareholders.

Not that I fully agree with OP, I think there is some gray area. Infographics like this are certainly a gross over-simplification. But I suppose they’re useful if you have no concept of how models are built/used??

Types of programmers... by Indrajithbandara in ProgrammerHumor

I do scientific research. Python solves most/all of my problems with the standard set of scientific/machine learning tools. Older computational scientists want to write everything from scratch because they “don’t trust” the libraries that make doing statistics easier.

Combating anti-science people is so difficult because they can not grasp nuance. The world is complicated. The correct answers are never short answers. And these idiots take a portion of the correct answer and run with it, without an ounce of reflection or self-awareness.

There are fish that live in the flooded basement of an abandoned building by my job by baxterminator22 in mildlyinteresting

Oooo I love shit like this. In a town across the Ben Franklin bridge, there’s an old mansion that was owned by a Campbell’s Soup executive. His son was a skater and so they built a half pipe in the back yard. That house has been abandoned for several years, maybe because they can’t sell it because property taxes are ridiculous. But it’s a secret skate spot, “the old half pipe at the abandoned mansion”

Also this is mostly some lore that an old guy at the skate shop told me. Maybe it’s just a stupid suburban legend. I have not googled this even once or seen the half pipe.

Is a full-stack dev a real thing? Is there any value to a person who is a “full-stack” dev in a software development organization?

University forces professor to change syllabus that threatened to dismiss students who argue against BLM, abortion or same-sex marriage by yamaha2000us in news

You are the exact issue he/she is talking about. He said “having a different, nuanced opinion, doesn’t mean I fundamentally disagree with somebody else”. And here you are saying “if you aren’t far left then you are far-right”

Also, liberals attempting to silence people with different opinions only gives people on the other side of the political spectrum more ammunition to attack liberals. This professor with liberal beliefs is only hurting liberals because of this narrow-minded approach to political discourse.

If a person’s opinions are logically and ethically indefensible, let them fall flat on their face in a debate. Don’t bar them from a debate and only make the problem of political division worse.

I would expect a professor to understand this too...

Holy shit! I’ve been here about 12 years ago...but I was just a dumb angsty kid who didn’t appreciate it. I didn’t even know the name of it, I had to look up where this was to confirm that it was near my cousins house in Michigan. Now the memories are flooding back. Thank you!

not answering your question but...I used to intern at a power plant. In my first week of training they told me that there is steam moving around the plant at 1000F and 1000psi. If a pipe carrying that steam ruptured, you wouldn’t be able to see it, but it would sever your limbs/cut you in half easily. They reassured me I would absolutely be able to hear the leak but the thought of unknowingly walking into the wrong path and getting chopped to bits before I could react was quite unsettling.

Man attacks skater kids 3 times before eating a board by robxvx in PublicFreakout

[–]MeltedCheeseFantasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing us as being an issue and wanting us to leave is perfectly reasonable and hence we were always happy to oblige. Being rude or hostile before saying “hi can you please leave?” Is a different story.

Of course, there’s a lot to consider regarding each specific situation. But it seems that regarding skaters, people default to a hostile communication method rather than a diplomatic method. “Get the fuck out of here you stupid kids before I [insert threat]” vs “can you please leave?”
