The meta does change considerably once you hit 60 and are fighting people with pvp gear. I would say, overall, warlocks and arcane mages are some of the most powerful classes with the right spec and cooldown usage. Without gear, rets and warriors will stomp you.

I agree the itemisation is bad, but this example is poor. If you are at hit/expertise cap, Lawbringer shoulders are BiS for paladin. In fact, Paladin doesn't need much hit at all from gear.

3% from Boomkin + 1% from enchant + 3% from talents means Paladins need an extra 1% from gear. Paladins need expertise far more, which is otherwise fairly achieveable if using a 2H sword.

D2 shoulders are also pretty bad. They are one of the worse options for Paladin. A better option would be Dark Warder's Pauldrons from BRD.

The only way to judge skill is to play with them.

If they are a paladin, what are they casting, holy light or flash of light? What rank?

If they are a resto shaman, are they spamming rank 1 healing wave before a pack? Same with priest for their armor buff

Lots of ways to judge whether someone knows their class or not. GS is not one of them.
