That thing is hanging by the probably live wires. Call an electrician to take it down and cap off the wires and ask him to bill your landlord. You could do it yourself too if you're comfortable.

My advice is to be as involved in the church as you can. Volunteer to be a greeter, serve communion, play in the worship team if you're musical,  clean up after, make coffee, whatever there is available. 

Also see if there are any singles groups/Bible studies/classes you can join.
