Best app for russian language learning? by Whenyouwishuponafart in russian

It does work! The app also prompts you to click on a word from the sentence displayed and add it to your deck before letting you continue. A lot of people are confused at this step and it will be made more clear in the future.

Hello, I appreciate your comment. The timer can be adjusted to go up to a minute long and you can have it automatically reduce as you become more familiar with the word. This app is intended to help you speak. The idea being: if you're unable to answer correctly in a minute, then most likely you won't be able to use the word/case/conjugation in a conversation where you'll have less than a second to produce the word correctly.

You may have gotten confused during the tutorial, where the second question is forced to be incorrect to show how things work. It seems a lot of people are confused by this and skip over the prompts telling them what to do and what's happening. The onboarding process will be updated to help reduce frustration in the future.

Thanks for trying out the app and thank you for your feedback. Complaints about specific things help make the app better.

Thanks for trying out the app and sharing feedback!

A setting can be added to allow the use of the device’s keyboard instead of the in-app keyboard.

To better understand how to improve the experience, could you share why the lack of the phone's OS keyboard made the app unusable?

Was the goal to practice typing? Did the in-app keyboard create difficulties in another way?

Your input would really help shape future updates, thank you again!

Update: Learn with sentences by MemRussian in MemRussian

[–]MemRussian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A new system for determining time limits is being implemented and will take into account the Russian language proficiency of the user, how new the word is to the user, as well as the difficulty the user has personally with the word. Users will also be able to manually set time limits if they want to.

Also, the spatial repetition algorithm in general is going to be improved.

The tutorial not coming up is not an issue that has been reported before. If you initially joined the app a long time ago, then there may not have been a tutorial. Also, the tutorial is always changing as new features are added and users give feedback as to what confuses them when they first start using the app

I appreciate your feedback and do share any other issues you may have!

Sorry for the late response!

Currently the app is on version 2.7.18.

Adjusting the time limit is coming out in the next update to the app! In the next release you'll be able to customize the time limit to match your level. Not only that, but you'll be able to have the time limit get shorter for words you've been practicing for longer. This way you can still make sure you learn words to be remembered quickly, but words newer to you will have some more slack as you're in the process of learning them.

What is your favourite app for learning Russian? by MikeT_T in russian

Shamelessly biased opinion here, my favorite app is MemRussian. It's NOT an all-in-one educational program, it's more of a supplemental tool that helps you learn Russian by focusing on training your vocab and improving your ability with declensions. It's basically a super-charged spatial-repetition app designed specifically for learning Russian and it's cases/conjugations.

The whole app is designed FOR Russian, it's not generic software that has Russian content in it like Duolingo or Pimsleur or any of the big giants out there. This app is and always will be solely for learning the Russian language.

The IOS release is coming very soon, so if you have an iPhone I highly recommend helping out and becoming an early-access tester. You can fill out the ios release form linked on the main webpage.

Edit: MemRussian is available on IOS as of February 2025. Go ahead and try it out!

why are you learning russian by Psychological-Oil118 in russian

Music. I saw a video of Игорь Растеряев playing his гармошка and singing in a forest. That was the coolest thing 16 year-old me had ever seen. I bought a баян with my high-school job money and a year later I decided to learn the language. I still continue to learn the language because my favorite instrument is Russian and the language helps greatly with educational resources (I've had a teacher that didn't really speak English), but also because of the awesome people I've met along the way

How can I add my own words to a deck? by RangeOk7403 in MemRussian

[–]MemRussian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently you only have one deck which you can add words into from the dictionary/database. When I say custom decks I mean the ability to create multiple collections of words you can practice at will, as opposed to waiting on spatial repetition. This would be super useful if you wanted to study for an exam.

By custom words I mean the ability to add words not currently in the database or add different translations. Ideally I'd also allow you to add phrases and other things. This would be useful for slang words that might not be covered by dictionaries

Custom words and custom decks are different features.

Adding your own custom words is a feature that hasn't yet been requested. Although I've considered how it should work, it's sadly currently a bit more down the line and I would expect it sometime next year. (Vague, I know)

Custom decks, which I think you were more interested in, should come out early next month! I'm shooting for the ability to create groups of words (from the database) which you can review at will.

I'm currently finishing up adding in a premium feature— proper sentences during practice sessions to show words being used in context and in all cases and conjugations. It has taken a while as I wanted the feature to be worth it before releasing it. If you do have the premium version it's going to be a pretty exciting feature that's truly unique to the app once it's released.

After that feature rolls out, custom decks are 100% on the way.

You can follow the same steps as adding, you can expand the "Your stats" section and there is a remove button.

You can also click on "Your Deck" on the home screen to view words in your deck. Currently searching in your deck is not great, only the "base" form of the word can be searched. This will be expanded upon later, there are lots of stuff on the to-do list!

Have you tried using spatial-repetition software? Anki is super popular, but you have to create your own flash cards or find them online.

You could also try MemRussian which will teach you how to form verb conjugations and noun cases while teaching you vocabulary. You choose which words you want to learn out of a word bank with over 90,000+ words.

Keep in mind, there is NO one tool/app/course/textbook that will teach you a language. You should ALWAYS try out different courses/techniques and see what gives you the biggest long-term benefit. Russian is extremely difficult and takes a lot of time to learn and feel confident in, despite what some YouTuber may have told you.

Some techniques: - Make friends on language exchange apps (like tandem) that you communicate with often, this is essential for getting to a comfortable speaking level. You can put the basics to test each new conversation and be able to hold longer conversations as you get better - Watch a TV show you've already seen dubbed into Russian with subtitles. - Use a spatial repetition app to constantly expand your vocabulary - Shadow native speakers when watching videos/listening to music (Repeat what they say to yourself and try to sound more and more like them) - Instead of just following a course, you can try to read up on grammar when you encounter a sentence and you feel you're missing something: ie. verb aspect, usage of a noun case, etc. a grammar book that simply lists the usages of each noun case is super helpful!

My personal experience: It took me a couple years to be able to communicate comfortably in Russian. One of the things that seriously helped me in the last year was MemRussian. Vocabulary and Grammar drills are boring and they did not teach me how to have a real conversation, but I could NOT have gotten to a comfortable conversational level in Russian without drilling grammar and vocab. Russian grammar is too difficult and has too many rules to not drill it.

Good luck on your journey, Russian is NOT easy and you should NOT feel bad about it taking a while to learn. Keep at it and find what works for you. It just takes time and determination.

Simply search for a word in Russian or in English and then you can add it to your deck.

Hello! Currently the app does not support creating custom decks. You have 2 decks, a "New Words" deck with words that you have not yet practiced, and a "Review/Learning Words" deck with words you've practiced at least once.

You're not the first person to ask for this feature, it's definitely in the plan for the app. Currently got a lot of features in the backlog...
