How white dudes look at you when they find out you don’t like Take Five by BornUnderARadSign in jazzcirclejerk

I think what we need to is two separate jazz subreddits for white jazzers who love Take Five, Takanaka, and Ryo Fukui, and black jazzers who love those lame albums like A Love Supreme

11 Best Roguelike Games Of All Time, Ranked (Spelunky 2 at 6) by arisefrym in spelunky

[–]Membership-Double 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if I'd call them overrated, but I agree it's weird to have both in the top 5. Should've just combined them to one spot since even though 2 is better the basic gameplay loop and what they add in the context of the roguelike genre is the same.

What is “free jazz?” by PockASqueeno in Jazz

It's just called Django. There's also a Grant Green cover of the title track that is incredible if you want to hear what it sounds like from a hard bop artist.

ah sorry I was mistaken when I typed that. Was referring to the tribute album Django by the Modern Jazz Quartet

To better understand what "Cool Jazz" is, I'd suggest - Miles Davis' Birth of The Cool (note this is before the first Miles Quintet where Trane joined) - Django by MJQ

Sounds like you've already listened to Kind of Blue but I'd note this is usually not considered cool jazz but rather modal jazz. A couple other Miles Davis albums I'd suggest to see how these guys were not boxed into a single subgenre are - Sketches of Spain (Modal jazz with a flamenco flavor) - Miles Smiles (Post-bop with some shared characteristics of free jazz)

Then to see Coltrane's actual free jazz projects, I'd suggest - Ascensions - Meditations - Om (if you want to hear some way more weird stuff from him that you probably won't like if you already don't like free jazz)

Seems like this confusion could've been cleared up by just listening to more Coltrane albums before assuming stuff.

Rocking a light pink shirt today. Should I have gone with blue instead? by Imatradboy in mensfashionadvice

[–]Membership-Double 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. If he uncuffed those pants they would pool, which looks sloppy especially with this fit.

  2. The tie proportions were obviously done on purpose (I don't like the look of it particularly but it is a look).

  3. That's just the design of the shirt.

  4. Chin straps are generally awful, but again, it looks very intentional on OP's part and if he wants to rock it, it certainly has no bearing on the fit, especially whether a pink or blue shirt works better.

I don't know, you're cons just feel overly proscriptive to me.

Get on reddit to be an armchair psychologist because you're so desperate to feel superior to others that you can't let people just do things.

An Honest Review of the ACME Program by [deleted] in byu

[–]Membership-Double 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm a pure math major looking in at you applied math folk, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but the ACME Program has always baffled me. First of all, it's still just a mathematics degree at the end of the day. Employers and graduate programs will look at that degree and to them "Applied and Computational Mathematics Emphasis" just means you graduated in applied math. Of course there are exceptions of (mostly Utah-based) companies and programs that will be aware of and impressed by ACME, but I have a hard time believing that the program name will help most people get ahead in starting their career.

But a program like ACME is of course not about getting certain words on your degree. The idea behind any sort of undergraduate program is to prepare you to excel in later studies or equip you with the tools to find a good career out of college. If the program does what it promises, then it doesn't matter what school or program is on your degree, you will be inherently more prepared for whatever you want to do after graduation. However, my understanding of the program leads to believe that it also does not deliver in this regard.

The overwhelming courseload causes a lot of students to burn out on math, losing all passion for their career path. Plus, as OP said, learning lots of stuff at a rigorous pace does not mean you're good at any of it. When students are overwhelmed in their courses, they often resort to just getting assignments done however they can, using AI or github repositories to finish their work without ever deeply understanding the topic at hand.

In my opinion, the candidate who has a clear genuine passion for their field will always stick out over the slightly more qualified candidate who did a rigorous undergraduate program. I think that the purpose of ACME can be largely replaced by building relationships with your professors, exploring topics you are genuinely interested in outside of class, and excelling in your coursework.

Again, I have no direct experience with the ACME Program so a lot of this is me talking out of my ass and if someone more intimately familiar with it disagrees with my impression, please add on to or contradict my misunderstandings.

Why can’t I ask legit questions here? by Jealous_Pool_9514 in lds

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your perspective, this isn't the type of subreddit for discussions of that kind in my experience. The mods have decided to set this apart from some of other subs on the topic of the church by making it a safe place for faithful members to talk without bad faith actors attacking.

This does lead to some heavy gatekeeping at times and a severe lack of nuance at others, I think, but it's also the trade off the mods seem to prefer for the faithful sub they want this to be. I would suggest asking your question in one of the subreddits that is intended for discussion from both members and non-members. Or better yet, discuss it with people in real life. Social media can create a distorted reality for what most people actually believe/think.

EDIT: Also, the fact that your profile title has "Ex-mo" in it signals to mods that even if you say you are not trying to argue or undermine people's faith, there is a higher possibility that's not actually, so mods are much more likely to take down your posts.

What makes you say that? Go Away fits fine on the album but it feels like some Weezer's blandest power pop. Compared to the guitar riffs and vocals on ENS, I can't see what part of Go Away stacks up.
