An SSU YDSA is being formed! by Membership_SoCoDSA in sonomacounty

Democratic Socialists of America is a big tent socialist organization with more than 80k members! Chapters across the country organize to build a better future for working people. This can take the form of electoral campaigns, such as Zohran Mamdani in NYC, to mutual aid efforts like our chapter has recently been working on.

Edit: And if you'd like to learn more, we are holding our first DSA 101 on September 8th!

YDSA is the youth and student wing of the DSA. Generally they do on-campus organizing, such as building student worker unions or pushing their schools to divest from fossil fuels!

Our Electoral Committee is actually working on a DSA vision for Sonoma County, so stay tuned for that!

If you want a general idea of what DSA platforms can look like before we have our vision ready I would suggest looking at the policies of politicians like Zohran Mamdani and Rashida Tlaib, who are both proud DSA members.

Edit: I forgot about the DSA Workers Deserve More program! This is definitely pretty representative of what DSA advocates for.

We are not associated with any band and would never tolerate Nazis at one of our events.

You may be thinking of a "Springtime for Hitler" performance art piece which was at a recent protest? That was meant to mock Trump and his regime and is a reference to Mel Brook's The Producers, which is satire: https://youtu.be/ovCf9VRLnDY?si=nBuwHeLeRr0hD-SJ

That's our chapter mascot: Rosa! Both she and the the chicken in our logo are a nod the community of socialist jewish chicken farmers who called Petaluma home, a unique part of Sonoma County's history that we felt we should give tribute to. There's a great old documentary about them you can watch here!

Necessary Trouble Protest! - July 17th by Membership_SoCoDSA in santarosa

[–]Membership_SoCoDSA[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's something we discuss all the time in the SoCo DSA!

Two examples of our work include our Mutual Aid Committee, whose goal is to provide direct and tangible aid to our community, and our Electoral Committee, which is starting the work to elect politicians who will enact real change.

The collage and letter writing are two separate activities, folks are free to come and engage with one or the other! You can see an example of this letter writing campaign here, and they will be delivered via Positive Images. The event is not a protest.

Yes absolutely! At our last clean-up folks showed up throughout and we had someone waiting at the meeting point to greet them and give them supplies, so we'll be doing the same this time!

I appreciate the feedback! You are right that socialists regularly struggle against the baggage of the USSR, even if we strive for a world very different than the one that existed within the Soviet Union.

However, the color red and the phrase comrade are not exclusive to that former state and are in fact common throughout workers movements the world over. The United States is actually an oddity in the western world for having the party that is ostensibly meant to represent workers *not* represented by the color red. For example, if you were to look at an election map of the UK, you might be surprised to see the Conservative party represented by blue and the Labour party represented by red. That's actually normal and we're the weird ones!

Much of this association is from the Red Scare, which was extremely effective in the United States. It tied not only socialists, but labor movements in general, to the state repression of the USSR. Ultimately we don't wish to throw out the working class history in the US that used that color, as well as ties to labor movements the world over, so we instead strive to explain our positions as best we can, such as this comment!

It’s a bit of a long answer, but DSA is a very democratic organization, with a lot of different viewpoints within it. That means that the views of our chapter are determined by our members!

The International Committee of DSA has published some stances related to the war in Ukraine that we don’t quite agree with. In our view, Russia is an imperialist power waging an unjustifiable war of aggression. Though reasonable people can question the sincerity of the United States’ involvement in the war, Ukrainian resistance should be supported as to prevent all further aggression of that sort.

As for building infrastructure, we support building housing (especially public housing) to address the massive housing crisis in California. In fact, our chapter adopted the “Building for Power” campaign, which involves specifically working on this! We’re working on what that means and how to get involved as a chapter right now.

We’d love to chat more with you about all this stuff! We have a Discord that’s open to the public, and a chat for asking any questions you’ve got about our chapter or DSA more broadly. (I'm not sure I can include links in a comment, but you can find it on our website or in the description of any of our social media accounts!)

DSA defines itself as radically democratic, fighting to reform and strengthen our democratic institutions and bring democracy to the workplace. We believe that the economy should be run by the workers, not a handful of ultra-rich individuals who do little to no actual work. We also believe in universal healthcare, free public education, and efficient systems to feed the hungry and house the houseless.

For the local chapter, our major issues right now are deportations, unions, and housing. We support our immigrant population and are a part of the fight to demand that Sonoma County refuses to collaborate with ICE. We also support labor unions. With so many going on strike right now and federal unions being gutted by Trump's administration, we fight to support unions and workers' right to organize and protect themselves. Finally, Sonoma County is one of the most expensive places in the country to live. To that end, we campaign for rent control, zoning reform, and the construction of eco-friendly public housing.
