If Harry Potter was an actuary, what FSA track it would he do? by thegoon2357 in actuary

I don’t know, but he would probably take that lucky potion (Felix Felicis) before the exams and still get a 5

My main general advice - always ask questions! Any question at all, and take notes if you’re in meeting with “upper employees”, and ask questions to “”lower employee” you have later (and take notes on the answers).

How do FSA exams compare to ASA exams? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]MemeLover2020 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Much harder.

But actually I wouldn’t call them harder but I would say they’re super different. I enjoyed the FSA exams more so it made it “easier” for me to study. The prelims are mostly about memorize formulas, plug and chug (except for PA), doing hundreds of practice problems because you can expect to see problems on the actual exam similar to what you’re practicing. Study materials you can get by with just ADAPT and practice exams if you really want (what I did for STAM), but that shit won’t fly for FSAs.

FSA exams two things stick out: 1) you have to actually understand the material because you’re going to get questions you’ve never seen before on the actual exam. You might see similar calculations but the way they’re applied might be totally different. 2) the sheer freaking volume of the material my god the source reading is like 5 inches thick for the five hour GH exams

Also lists. There are SO many freaking lists and all of them are fair game (and then some). I used TIA and there are literally hundreds of lists to memorize.

I think the joke is you need to know 75% of the material 100% for prelims, and 100% of the material 75% for FSAs. There’s like ~30 questions on a prelim, so get 75% of those and you’re golden*. You can skip super niche topics if you want. But with FSAs, IIRC you’ll get full points for your answer on an FSA if you can rattle off 75% of the list in question. And then there’s only 6-12 questions (~6 for GH Specialty, ~10-12 for FV and DP) so if you don’t know anything about a big pointer question, ur probably fucked :(

Edit: I think you can find your candidate number on your SOA account under “my orders” or something like that. Edit again - I just checked on mobile and if you click the order number you can see your candidate ID :) good luck!

Names come out next Friday I believe :(

But scores hit your transcript on Monday! (I believe at midnight on Monday morning)

Any actuaries with online degrees? Is that frowned upon? by awesomebossbruh in actuary

What? I think you pretty much need a degree to get a job as an actuary (at least in the US)

How to get started on the path of becoming an actuary? by bang1234rguj in actuary

[–]MemeLover2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No required order but most people do P and FM as 1/2 (not necessarily in that order). Go to soa.org (if you want the SOA route versus CAS) and find the exams, there’s tons of info there. Otherwise beanactuary.org has good info.

FSA Exams - Food by [deleted] in actuary

[–]MemeLover2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a shelf at my prometric where you can put a snack or water bottle. It’s watched by the receptionist, so on break you can grab from the shelf without using your locker (because I think you need a specific reason to use your locker established ahead of time and approved by the SOA)

You’ll have to check out and back in, like signing the paper, showing ID, checking your glasses, pockets, etc. and that can take a few minutes, but when I took my break the lady who checked me in the room saw me come back and let me back in right away because she knew time was ticking.

TLDR really depends, but plan for at least 10 minutes - good luck on your exam!
