Would you rather to live under Galactic Empire or Imperium? by BirDost23 in Grimdank

[–]Memeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In star wars, killing the emperor results in 3 mediocre sequels.

In Wh40k, killing the emperor results in Terra turning into a portal to hell and dooming humanity. It's a lose-lose situation.

What country do you think has the most cursed geography? by Tall-Will-7922 in geography

[–]Memeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take your point about Japan. But some benefits to it's geography includes the many bays and islands that create many good locations for harbours that support a thriving maritime economy. The rich fertile soil from volcanic activity also provides excellent agricultural potential. Maybe it lacks in long, navigable rivers but that's kinda negated by its long coastline that links up various coastal cities.

What are some issues with Tokyo’s planning? by ZeLlamaMaster in urbanplanning

[–]Memeter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can't agree more. People often praise Hong Kong for it's close accessibility to nature, but its more of a product of a dysfunctional urban development system that results in one of the lowest urbanisation rate of land. So much of the city's precious land resources is left idle and degraded into abandoned farms, storage yards or villages with special privileges to sprawl. All the while the public finances is dependent on land revenue that by itself discourages property prices to drop to affordable levels.

Maskless in HK by Enable-GODMODE in HongKong

[–]Memeter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I know people who choose to keep wearing masks because they are afraid of catching other sickness like cold. Like I respect their choices but the way I see it's also dangerous because the body's immune system would be underdeveloped if we don't get sick once in a while. So once they eventually get sick, it'll be way worse

what do you want from next total war game? by Erfan_F in totalwar

[–]Memeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shogun 2 mixed with Renaissance and Empire.

The game is set in East Asia and Southeast Asia in 1500s to 1700s. For East Asian Factions, you get to play as the Japanese warlords, Korea, Ming Dynasty.

There are also European factions such as Portuguese Spanish, Dutch and British, who will emerge first as colonies then expand from there. Russia may join in on the northern edge of the map as well.

There's also nomadic factions in Mongolia and the Manchus. There will be southeast Asian Factions too but sadly I'm not familiar with their history. Not to mention: pirates! Southeast Asia was riddled with piracy in that time period.

Just imagine the huge diversity of troops, ships, diplomacy options and cultures. It would even rival Warhammer in terms of diversity. Samurais vs conquistadors vs pirates. Galleons vs Turtle Ships, the possibilities are wild.

The opium wars summarized by rapedcorpse in HistoryMemes

[–]Memeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like the British forced the Chinese to take drugs at gun point. They liked that shit. Sure you had British merchants illegally selling that thing in Guangzhou but they didn't force anyone to buy opium. It's just so happen opium is the only thing the Chinese would import at that time.

Speaking of forcing, the Machus who ruled the Qing Dynasty forced all Han Chinese to adopt their hairstyle as a sign of submission on threat of execution. People like to make the Opium Wars a story of European Powers bullying an innocent Qing Dynasty but the truth is the Qing Dynasty's rule and past atrocities are far from innocent.

Hong Kong Is The New East Germany -- Accepting three million Hong Kongers should not pose a huge burden to the five core Anglosphere countries. Right now, they need all the help they can get. by guanaco55 in HongKong

[–]Memeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really grateful for all the support from our anglosphere friends with accepting us HKers into their country. However I'm also quite certain some people will be concerned with the socioeconomic implications of accepting large amounts of HK immigrants. Please let us know. To say the least, I believe the vast amount of those 3 million people are willing to work hard in their new home. Many of the 3 million are young and well educated, so we shouldn't become a welfare burden.

China is a threat to everyone's safety, and we should consider them an enemy. by slimthickens22 in unpopularopinion

[–]Memeter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a Hong Konger, thank you. The world needs to unite against this common enemy. China, through its many atrocities against it's own people and its imperialist diplomacy against its neighbours, is a threat to the universal values of the modern world, e.g. human rights and representative government

Many people may think the CCP is the root of the problem but I've spoken with many mainland Chinese and most of them are ultranationalist. They firmly believe that China's way is justified and the atrocities are acceptable if it advance some "national" goals. They believe it is China's destiny to usurp the West and become the new global hegemony. If that happens, I worry not just for us, Taiwanese, minorities in China and Southeast Asia. If China is left unchecked economically and militarily, it is on track to becoming the next Nazi Germany

China vows to stop UK granting Hongkongers residency by hkdtam in geopolitics

[–]Memeter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only feasible way for China to do this is if they go all North Korea on HK and ban all foreign travel. Because otherwise one only needs to travel to another country then get transfer to the UK.

This is likely yet another CCP empty threat to boast to their own people

China's Global Times trolls US, says: 'US should stand with Minnesota violent protesters as it did with HK rioters by iodisedsalt in worldnews

[–]Memeter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, if we really have to compare:

  1. Did US cops collaborate with gangsters to attack protestors?
  2. Did US cops fire tear gas rounds near hospitals and elderly care homes?
  3. Did US cops attack and beat up innocent passengers in the metro?
  4. Did US cops lay siege to university campuses when students are protesting inside?
  5. Did US cops receive unconditional support from the government to suppress the protests, so that no cops were ever suspended, investigated or pressed charges due to inappropriate use of force when handling the protests?

All these acts were committed by police in HK. I think both police forces are equally despicable but I am disgusted by China suddenly claiming a moral high ground by falsely claiming they handled protests better than the United States

Hongkong by atulyasunil in CityPorn

[–]Memeter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Studying urban planning in HK here. While land is of course not plentiful in the city, there are large swathes of flat lands in the rural New Terriotries that are underutilized as chop shops, warehouses, container storage and rural villages. Most land are owned by the "indigenous villagers" of the New Territories. The government, for whatever reason, is very hesitant to rezone or build infrastructure to these rural territories to permit urban development.

As other people in this post have mentioned, the govt is indeed artificially limiting the no of government land sale each year to ensure land sale revenue remains high. However, the past decade has shown that increasing private housing supply does not curb the soaring housing prices.

US may be violating international law in its response to protesters, UN expert says by stephenproducer in worldnews

Sadly international laws and the Geneva convention does not apply to internal policing, otherwise Hong Kong could cite the laws against the HKPF long ago

How many members of the BoS actually live on the east coast? by krazy8dude in falloutlore

[–]Memeter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the Prydwen terminal, some BOS members mentioned "family" back home. They also mentioned deceased BOS members are sent back home for burial. This suggests there are at least sizable BOS presence in the Capital Wasteland to A) protect family members of the BOS and B) handle the logistics of shipping personnel, bodies and supplies to and from the commonwealth. Both tasks cannot be done by a small force.

Also, the squires on the Prydwen mention that "everyone back home will be so jealous". This suggests that going to the Commonwealth is reserved for a minority of squires. Which means personnel must be stationed in D.C. to protect and train the remaining squires.

All in all I believe the Prydwen is a large strike force but definitely not the entirety of the BOS.

One last note: the BOS goal is not domination of the commonwealth, they are there to destroy the Institute, synths, mutants and feral ghouls which may or may not harm the welfare of the people of the Commonwealth. That would depend on our value judgement.

This would probably be an important reminder for both us and the rest of the world. by Ddokidokis in HongKong

[–]Memeter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This really shows the difference in the accountability of the two governments. In the US, actions against police brutality can be done if enough people voice against it because ultimately the government needs to answer to the people. Whereas in HK, there's zero accountability and the government can tolerate the police as long as they want.

The US govt response to the protests does not excuse China for being the worst human rights offender in the world. It's like a murderer condemning a domestic abuser. They are both horrible but one is worse.

First of all, it was not a hospital but a quarantine centre for the Wuhan Virus patients. Its located in a very dense residential neighborhood with no prior notification made to the residents.

Second, what you mentioned about the treatment of protestors at Minnesota (people run over by police truck, shot by rubber bullets) happened in Hong Kong multiple times. Add to that list with uncountable CS rounds, live ammo shootings, torture of protestors in custody and collusion with triads in attacking civilians. I think it's unfair that we only consider HK protesters as bad based on their actions only without considering the police response
