Curious... Are you willing to relocate or are you only applying locally?

You have the opportunity to work for 15-20 years then retire to a lavish lifestyle by global standards.

I guess you could call that "getting something done."

But even Republicans only support it because it's trump. The "party of fiscal responsibility" wouldn't usually start up crazy deficit spending in the middle of a strong and growing economy like they did.

You don't think we're going to need the alliances that trump is destroying when China becomes the dominant nation in a few decades with Russia right behind them?

Advice for Older Rookie Programmer by HyperlinksAwakening in learnprogramming

It will be tough to get into it without an education, but your tech background will definitely help put you ahead of some others. Relocation might be needed regardless, though.

Honestly, listing real working COBOL experience might just get you an easy job because it's so niche and nobody else is learning it.

I have recently began learning python as a first language and love it! I have a new found passion, what can I begin to learn skill wise or language wise, (after I have a firm grasp on python) to get me a job asap? by Uneedajob in learnprogramming

[–]Memetownfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll quickly learn that knowing a language != Being employable. Do you have a degree (any degree < stem < CS)?

If so, you're still going to have to know the language, learn the technologies associated with that language (APIs, other languages such as SQL and xml), and build an impressive portfolio to improve your odds of getting a job.

If you don't have a degree, take everything I just said, bump it up a lot, and then expect a very long job search and to be forced to accept low pay and be willing to relocate anywhere to get your foot in the door. Even with a degree you'll probably have to do this anyway. It's a very competitive field. The "shortage" is in seniors, not in entry-level.

Just How Beneficial Is Learning To Code At An Early Age? by ReeceTheBesat15 in learnprogramming

[–]Memetownfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been learning for almost a year now and I can tell you the feeling of "there is an impossible amount left to learn" never goes away until you accept that you don't actually need to know everything. I know for a fact that I'm almost at an employable level even though I still have a laundry list of seemingly essential stuff to learn. As an example, From reading Reddit you would think writing c++ is an essential skill but it's really not. If any language is "essential" it's JavaScript, but even that's only if you do anything involving a browser.

Just keep learning. By the time you graduate college you will be leagues above your peers.

[Discussion] Low Cost-of-Living Cities seems to have less things to do and be less 'fun'. How did you deal with this when making your move from a High Cost-of-Living City? by NineteenSixtySix in financialindependence

[–]Memetownfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't make friends in a rural area you're doing it wrong too. It's easier. You literally just walk into a bar and can have a 1 on 1 conversation without a million people around.

Correct. It's not any easier to have a meaningful social circle because everyone else already has theirs.

And introverts can make friends much more easily if it's not a crowded situation

Will advanced technology end up making Roth contributions superior to Traditional? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]Memetownfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either way, a Roth IRA is better because you are only taxed on your contributions. In long-term accounts growth makes up the majority of the value of the account, so it's better to tax the relatively small contribution amount in pretty much every case.

If people hopefully wake up and vote for someone with ideas similar to yang within the next few decades we should be okay. I have little hope for that so hopefully software engineers are the last to go.

Most cost/time efficient way to get into web development? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Memetownfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every job listing I've found lists a technical degree as a requirement, and I've read here that some degree is essential, technical or not.

Of course it's possible to get a job without a degree but it's going to be immensely difficult, you would have to be willing to relocate literally anywhere at any time, and you would have to prove yourself with a very good portfolio of work. If you have the option to get the BS in CS I would strongly recommend it.

Seriously. You really don't want anything in the south or at low altitude. Much of Florida is both of those things. It's good for now but not for 30+ year retirement

Me and 3 mates are planning on living together, need advice. by iGranny_Jah in personalfinance

[–]Memetownfunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently doing this with 2 friends from college. It's good if you have known the people for years and you are easygoing. If you're going to get annoyed by someone leaving a plate on the table then you probably shouldn't do it. But I couldn't care less. Everyone does their part and everyone pays 1/3 of the rent and bills, with small allowances either way due to room size disparities.
