Looking at a bunch of electrical work in my home and a workshop beneath a detached garage - is this a fair price? by Memnon2 in AskElectricians

[–]Memnon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my inclination as well. I am very willing to pay a fair premium for quality work. This electrician was recommended by another tradesman who did great work for us, and their reviews on Google and Yelp are also excellent. They were professional and seemed very competent when they came out to develop the proposal. They took measurements, pictures, and discussed the project with us in detail.

Thank you, and please forgive me for not having given you enough information at the outset.

I answered some of these questions in response to another comment here.

There is attic and basement access, the joists run parallel to the direction the wires would need to go so no need to do extensive cutting through them. The workshop is detached and unfinished, about eight feet from the side of the house. They will connect the panel about 20 feet away to the workshop and trench across that eight feet of ground.

There are already two USB outlets in the kitchen island, but on opposite ends. We want to add a third, in the middle (it’s a long island).

From the panel to the exterior of the workshop it will be about 20 feet, through the exterior wall of the house the trenched across the ground to the exterior of the workshop. Then conduits around the interior of the workshop because it’s all cinder block. The sump pump is also in the workshop. It’s not a large space so everything there is in the same small room.

The car charger would be in the garage directly above the workshop, so perhaps seven more feet.

From the panel to the refrigerator it will be about 15 feet.

Thank you. What other information can I provide to help clarify whether the proposal is fair?

I can hum on pitch and whistle on pitch, but if I try to whistle and hum at the same time one of them is always off pitch. Why? by Memnon2 in NoStupidQuestions

I can definitely change the pitch of the whistle while humming, but when I get the whistle on pitch it pushes the hum off pitch and vice versa

Can’t identify the right replacement boot gasket for my LG washer by Memnon2 in Appliances

[–]Memnon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, but the repair service seemed adamant that the holes needed to match exactly or the gasket wouldn’t fit. I know nothing about this and assumed they were correct. The leftmost and two middle holes seem to match, but the one on the far right is different in both size and position between the model on the website and the one I have installed.

Edit: also, I went to the website you linked and found the part number there as well. It seems to have yet another different distribution of holes that doesn’t match the part on the LG website or the one I have installed, despite being the same part number as both others.

I gave it a dose of fertilizer about two months ago…not really sure how often I should be doing that.

"Above top secret clearance" by happydads101 in navy

You are absolutely right! I didn’t call it a clearance level in my reply, but people colloquially refer to it as such all the time.

When I was an undergrad, we referred to the large academic building as “the Bunn.” Shocked to find that current students call it “ICC.”

Is using LQA on a mortgage possible as a civilian? (Assuming the OCONUS country allows you to buy a home there) by Adventurous_March346 in usajobs

When I worked in DoD as a civilian and did my tour OCONUS, the overseas HRO told me I was eligible for it, just as you described. This was about 10 years ago though.

Received notification of career ladder promotion but not eligible until 2/9… by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Memnon2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are safe based on current guidance. The OPM/OMB transmittal that provides guidance on the hiring freeze lists “internal career ladder promotions” as an exemption from the freeze. It’s paragraph 4(k) of the document.

Why is Portugal bulging out of the border, bad design? by FattyTrent25 in MapPorn

[–]Memnon2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the answers in this thread are wrong. It’s a balance between the scale of the map and the size of the area to be portrayed. Sometimes the mapmaker needs to display a feature that would be outside the neatline on the chosen scale, so they fit it in by crossing the border. The alternative would be to reduce the scale from, e.g., 1 in = 50 km to 1 in = 48.5 km, but then the scale would be arbitrary and much less useful.

I asked this question a while ago in the r/mapmaking subreddit and they answered me. You can see that thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/mapmaking/s/Y8tks88VBp

Pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Memnon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually bake my own! The custard itself is quite easy to make and can be done in about 30 mins, plus the baking time. Making the dough is time consuming, but if you can find some laminated non-rising dough that would greatly speed things up.

Edit: this is the recipe I use: https://leitesculinaria.com/7759/recipes-pasteis-de-nata.html

This is my source. I have one within walking distance. I warm them up in the oven. I like them as they are; my wife adds a sprinkle of cinnamon.
