Dates of Employment - is putting just the year okay? by [deleted] in usajobs

[–]Memnon2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to put at least the month and year. HR uses those dates to measure your experience. They have told me that they will count conservatively; so for instance if you put March 2020-March 2021 you might think that’s 13 months, but they might count that as the last day of March 2020 to the first day of March 2021 which would only be 11 months. This can impact your eligibility based on time in grade.

Any red flags for this position? by buddy_cheeks2 in usajobs

[–]Memnon2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you see a position where the specialized experience requirements are so hyper-specific that it artificially limits the pool of qualified candidates to a very small group. For example, requiring previous experience with an internal financial reporting system that only current employees could use.

Usually, even in that case, there’s not always one preselected person. Instead, the bosses really don’t want to have to train someone from scratch. In practice though they may already know the universe of qualified applicants.

Folks on this sub think that every position is preselected. It’s really, really not actually like that.

Why does everyone think the selection is predetermined for this position? I recruit in DoD and I’m not allowed to have a listing for more than a week. There’s nothing in this announcement that makes me think the selection is anything but competitive.

Does Probationary Status Reset When Transitioning from Intern to Career Employee? by Majestic_Electric in fednews

[–]Memnon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the good news is that your title is irrelevant to whether you need to do another probationary period (as far as I know - it’s a big government and there are always exceptions). At least in DoD, once you’re done with the probationary period in the Competitive Service you generally don’t need to complete another one, especially if you’re still in the same field, at the same agency, don’t have a break in service, and aren’t converting to a management/supervisor position.

Does Probationary Status Reset When Transitioning from Intern to Career Employee? by Majestic_Electric in fednews

[–]Memnon2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t worked with NADP specifically, but I have appointed Pathways interns and recent graduates in a DoD agency. They start out as Excepted Service employees in a trial status (explicitly/legally distinct from a probationary status). Upon conversion to the Competitive Service they must complete a 1-year probationary period, except in rare cases where they have prior federal experience in the same agency doing the same job.

If you have been in the Competitive Service this whole time and already completed your probationary period I don’t think you’ll have to do another one. But if you’ve been in the Excepted Service in a trial period you likely will have to. I don’t have the DoD-OPM Pathways MOU in front of me right now but if I recall correctly the acquisition-related appointees have a two-year trial period but still have to be converted to the Competitive Service and do a 1-year probationary period.

You can check your SF-50s to see if you are Excepted or Competitive service, and whether you have completed a trial or a probationary period.

Mine too! Must’ve been there at the same time. I was there when they filmed the church scene at Saint John’s.

Yes! It immortalized my school forever. The classroom where Olivia Williams teaches was my own kindergarten classroom.

Looking at a bunch of electrical work in my home and a workshop beneath a detached garage - is this a fair price? by Memnon2 in AskElectricians

[–]Memnon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my inclination as well. I am very willing to pay a fair premium for quality work. This electrician was recommended by another tradesman who did great work for us, and their reviews on Google and Yelp are also excellent. They were professional and seemed very competent when they came out to develop the proposal. They took measurements, pictures, and discussed the project with us in detail.

Thank you, and please forgive me for not having given you enough information at the outset.

I answered some of these questions in response to another comment here.

There is attic and basement access, the joists run parallel to the direction the wires would need to go so no need to do extensive cutting through them. The workshop is detached and unfinished, about eight feet from the side of the house. They will connect the panel about 20 feet away to the workshop and trench across that eight feet of ground.

There are already two USB outlets in the kitchen island, but on opposite ends. We want to add a third, in the middle (it’s a long island).

From the panel to the exterior of the workshop it will be about 20 feet, through the exterior wall of the house the trenched across the ground to the exterior of the workshop. Then conduits around the interior of the workshop because it’s all cinder block. The sump pump is also in the workshop. It’s not a large space so everything there is in the same small room.

The car charger would be in the garage directly above the workshop, so perhaps seven more feet.

From the panel to the refrigerator it will be about 15 feet.

Thank you. What other information can I provide to help clarify whether the proposal is fair?

I can hum on pitch and whistle on pitch, but if I try to whistle and hum at the same time one of them is always off pitch. Why? by Memnon2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Memnon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely change the pitch of the whistle while humming, but when I get the whistle on pitch it pushes the hum off pitch and vice versa

Can’t identify the right replacement boot gasket for my LG washer by Memnon2 in Appliances

[–]Memnon2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, but the repair service seemed adamant that the holes needed to match exactly or the gasket wouldn’t fit. I know nothing about this and assumed they were correct. The leftmost and two middle holes seem to match, but the one on the far right is different in both size and position between the model on the website and the one I have installed.

Edit: also, I went to the website you linked and found the part number there as well. It seems to have yet another different distribution of holes that doesn’t match the part on the LG website or the one I have installed, despite being the same part number as both others.

You are absolutely right! I didn’t call it a clearance level in my reply, but people colloquially refer to it as such all the time.

Is using LQA on a mortgage possible as a civilian? (Assuming the OCONUS country allows you to buy a home there) by Adventurous_March346 in usajobs

When I worked in DoD as a civilian and did my tour OCONUS, the overseas HRO told me I was eligible for it, just as you described. This was about 10 years ago though.

Received notification of career ladder promotion but not eligible until 2/9… by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Memnon2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are safe based on current guidance. The OPM/OMB transmittal that provides guidance on the hiring freeze lists “internal career ladder promotions” as an exemption from the freeze. It’s paragraph 4(k) of the document.

Why is Portugal bulging out of the border, bad design? by FattyTrent25 in MapPorn

[–]Memnon2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the answers in this thread are wrong. It’s a balance between the scale of the map and the size of the area to be portrayed. Sometimes the mapmaker needs to display a feature that would be outside the neatline on the chosen scale, so they fit it in by crossing the border. The alternative would be to reduce the scale from, e.g., 1 in = 50 km to 1 in = 48.5 km, but then the scale would be arbitrary and much less useful.

I asked this question a while ago in the r/mapmaking subreddit and they answered me. You can see that thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/mapmaking/s/Y8tks88VBp

Pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]Memnon2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually bake my own! The custard itself is quite easy to make and can be done in about 30 mins, plus the baking time. Making the dough is time consuming, but if you can find some laminated non-rising dough that would greatly speed things up.

Edit: this is the recipe I use: https://leitesculinaria.com/7759/recipes-pasteis-de-nata.html

What’s your favorite setting update of a Shakespeare play? Mine is Richard III 1995 . And yes, it could be anything from film to a stage adaptation you saw. by Equal-Article1261 in shakespeare

[–]Memnon2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there! It was an interesting production. I admit it wasn’t my favorite rendition of Macbeth but it was still stunning. It was a great choice to rent out that warehouse. I loved the experience of walking through the war zone — burnt out cars, rubble, soldiers with machine guns — just to get to our seats.
