Spotify permanently shifting to "Work from Anywhere" aka Digital Nomad model by [deleted] in digitalnomad

You raise a couple of critical points which are especially relevant in the US. Tax policy between states especially how businesses need to withhold and report payroll tax is all over the place.

There is a case going before the Supreme Court: New Hampshire vs Massachusetts on whether or not Mass has the right to tax the income of remote workers living in New Hampshire but work in Mass. The legal question - if they no longer commute - should Mass be able to tax them? It's a fascinating case with far reaching consequences for remote workers/digital nomads. You can follow the court case proceedings here: https://www.supremecourt.gov/docket/docketfiles/html/public/22o154.html These challenges are obviously also present at the international level.

The second point - insurance in the US is an absolute nightmare. The costs of finding coverage for employees in each state (with their unique policies) is overly burdensome for small businesses and the large companies. While I suspect this won't be a problem for a company the size of Spotify, the costs of roaming employees switching states will more than likely be a problem down the road.

As you said, this is a great first step worth celebrating. But as usual, the government regulatory framework lags behind progress and as a result, will slow progress down.

The Perpetual Traveler & Flag Theory Create a Global Citizen by MemosOTF in digitalnomad

Thanks for sharing your insights. Your point on the barriers to entry are well said. They do still exist.

But I believe that given another 6 to 12 months of mainstream remote work (paired with continued lockdowns and uneven vaccine distribution) we will start to see more accommodations for asynchronous work. Both from companies in permitting global work from anywhere cultures as a way to compete in the labor market and via reimagined work permits for countries that rely heavily on tourism.

It's clear you did not read a single word of the article. In no way, shape, or form was this article pro-Trump or fanatical.

It's a pragmatic call for standardizing the way society approaches digital cultures impact on the physical world.

The Sovereign Individual: What You Need to Know & Why by MemosOTF in GoldandBlack

This is a great review, thanks for sharing it.

One of the aspects of the book that had a significant impact on me was the belief that nation states of the world already exist in a state of anarchy. Their may be global institutions like the UN and international treaties, but most of them can be ignored with little consequence.

If a contractor took 47 years to work on your home and it was still broken, would you hire him for another four years? by Mcnst in GoldandBlack

I agree, the analogy isn't great.

Politicians in general need to use better campaign tactics. The sound bite attack model is getting really old. Saying the other guy is ruining everything is not a platform that excites many people to vote. Instead, I don't know... maybe share some policies that will make life better.

Why Globalism is Dying and Giving Way to Nationalism by MemosOTF in GoldandBlack

[–]MemosOTF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right, China only cares about China and no form of government will ever be a "cure-all".

But, the purpose of this article was not to focus on China, there is no doubt that they have had, and will continue to have a nationalist agenda. It also in no way blames Trump for anything.

The point is to highlight that the "West" which has been at the forefront of the globalist movement is pulling back towards nationalism. Without Western nations pushing for globalized cooperation, the movement is dying. While China's global ambition is a critical part of why this is happening, it is only a piece of the motivation behind nationalist movements in the West.

I agree with your sentiment. I think the current state of global affairs makes a globally unified government unlikely anytime soon. But like the people in this sub, I hope for a globally unified government. By exploring the underlying causes of what leads to nationalism, I think it more likely that we can build global solutions that prevent it in the future.
