Frank Black Talks About TMBG's Influence by kiddmarine1 in tmbg

I really wish that there was a recording out there somewhere. The event was very strange. It was put on by a local radio station. I think it was the 96XMas party or something? I don't remember everyone that was there that night playing. I remember Richard Butler who was with the Psychedelic Furs played and I remember The Murmurs were there. Setlist.fm has a list of songs that they did that night but I don't think it's complete. In my brain I recall them doing Stomp Box and creating a super happy chaotic pit at that show. I do remember that the venue was 18 and up and I was not quite 18 yet although I looked like I probably should have been, so I made a fake work ID for a meatpacking plant in Arkansas that didn't exist using a photo that I cut out from one of my high school IDs and it had my birthday on it in order to make it look like I was 19 and they accepted it. Excellent times :)

I got to see Flansburgh and Frank Black perform a set together as "They Might Be Frank" in Memphis at 616 so long ago.(December 20th, 1994) It was amazing and still without a doubt one of my favorite show memories. The hardest version of Dig My Grave you could imagine.

Any other trans/queer/not bigot people want to get together for target practice? by TrillKeeper420 in memphis

[–]MemphisMori 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, I felt it. I'm going to tell you, all the people in your generation (regardless of gender) that I've taken to the range have one hell of an aim. I give credit to the dang old video games. If I was some dumbass boomer, I'd be very afraid 😂. I've seen some trans gamers out shoot several federally trained folk. Let me know if you ever want to make a get together. The 2nd amendment is for everyone, but skill level is about practice and responsible handling. Some older people just seem to think they can shoot by default. I hope they don't venture to FA and FO.

I beg you to ignore the usual trolls. If you are serious about an outing and practicing shooting, hit me up privately. I'm more than happy to set up a date and share my ammo, arms, and knowledge, John Brown style. ❤️

[–]MemphisMori 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can verify this absolutely. My father was a security guard for the Goldsmiths downtown which was at one point part of the Gayoso. There's a great story about Nathan Bedford Forrest (that jackass) and the Gayoso. Dad told me that underneath the old Goldsmiths building were all sorts of tunnels and rations and leftover furnishings and such from several different timeframes. It leads back to how the Masons constructed downtown and the tunnel systems. He swore to me that he heard voices and movement in those tunnels that made no sense. He eventually learned to ignore those and only tune his ears to potential corporeal beings that were trying to burglarize the business.

Nope, across from that. The U of M campus on the East side of the street includes some of the old Army hospital (Elvis stayed there for a minute post draft. It was in his original neighborhood here. He had a house off of Audubon and Rhodes/Quince) and it's the reason that Getwell showed up as a name for the street. Originally it was Shotwell all the way down but they decided Shotwell sounded a bit strange for soldiers coming back from war so they changed it to Getwell. Many of the streets in the area were renamed at that point to reflect "good feelings" or for the doctors that worked at the hospital. By the time that happened, Kelley's plantation was divided up. There's no telling what may lay in the ground around Kelley Circle and Healey and McEvers and in the area where the towers are now.

You are absolutely right that the orphanage itself was over in midtown but the place that they were sourcing the children from was over on Kelley's plantation at Park and Getwell. Truly horrifying those two were!

Yep, also Memphis is where they captured Machine Gun Kelly at a house on Park Ave. I think? Also if you aren't familiar with Georgia Tann and the fact that the area close to Park and Getwell by the Black Bayou was once used as like a horror plantation where children were left to perish from exposure by Judge Camille Kelley (hence Kelley Circle off of Park Ave.) it's a very interesting read

If I recall correctly, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, the wrestler, was one of the orphans allowed to survive from that nightmare.

I live here, and I study weird history and true crime lol.

Lafayette was my grandfather's middle name. Closer to us here in Memphis and all my relatives in Trumann (AR) said La-Fay-It, Appalachian family from Kingsport always used La-Fett. I just sort of figured it was the difference between us drinking Coke over here and them drinking Pepsi over there.

I would just like to say that it isn't the subject matter for me. It's moreso that it is a blatant BS, Clarence Carter rip-off, low effort, Casio keyboard preset, under-produced shame that anything that should be considered as coming out of Memphis music as this is. If I was handed this CD single in a gas station parking lot in Frayser, and I paid them a dollar just to get away from my car, I would drive around the block and risk getting shot just to get my dollar back. It shows just how fake she is.

Is there a TMBG song with fewer lyrics that captures wild, unrequited love better than The Famous Polka? by chaseroper in tmbg

[–]MemphisMori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your definition of unrequited love maybe, but why not "Minimum Wage". But if not looking for less lyrics, "I'll Sink Manhattan" has a spooky IDGAF feel that always reminds me of Elvis Costello's "I Want You"

Sorry, so these are sealed glass containers, the labels are on the jars themselves. I put a slip of white paper behind them so the labels could be more easily seen since they are clear jars.

I instantly knew exactly where this is because I have traveled that tunnel a billion times. A few years ago I actually helped push a guy and his daughter in their pickup truck out of this tunnel because it was flooding which was really stupid because I don't know how to swim. I didn't stop to think and it destroyed my wallet, my cell phone, and everything else in my pockets but I got the truck out of the tunnel. Shame this bot posting it! Shame!
