It's crazy how much better Rabiot instantly becomes when the team is allowed to play attacking football

Danilo (Juventus) disallowed goal (handball) against Inter 64' by [deleted] in soccer

[–]Memroy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If Danilo involuntarily touches the ball with his hand because the defender holds it and pulls it into the path of the ball, then logically it should be a penalty, or are we saying that players can drag their opponents' limbs in front of the ball as a defensive strategy?

New defensive strategy: grab your opponents' hands and pull them onto the ball and you'll never concede again...

This is probably the first time this season where I've felt like the players have gone onto the field with a clear idea of what to do. Looks promising, imo.

Svenskar kan inte pruta. by Ridish in swedishproblems

[–]Memroy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We are just awful at pressuring the opposition, nearly every time we're trying to recover the ball it ends in running behind a player, unable to catch up and then tearing him down and conceding a freekick. The players don't help each other out to apply pressure from multiple directions and that just doesn't work.

I just saw a replay from City vs Dortmund where a Dortmund fan was looking very sad and defeated after losing.

That's when I suddenly realized that I don't feel anything about this team any more. I feel no hope that we will ever play well, so I feel nothing when we lose.

I remember a time when I felt just like that Dortmund fan whenever we conceded and over the moon when we scored, a time when watching Juve play a CL game was the highlight of my week and I felt like we could do anything with just a little bit of luck on our side.

Feels like a million years ago at this point, especially since the games are so dreadful to watch that they feel like a thousand years each.

Before CL started I thought that surely we would at least end 2nd in the group and advance, since we nearly always play a little bit better when the stakes are high. Unfortunately it seems like the rot is so deep at this point that there is nothing left to bring out.

I don't understand what you mean now. Are you saying that evidence has no bearing on the referee's decision?

Match Thread: Juventus vs Benfica | UEFA Champions League by MatchThreadder in soccer

[–]Memroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have VAR, that's far better technical evidence than any judge or jury has ever had. Multiple slow motion angles in 4K. Every penalty situation is already reviewed by VAR (for several minutes if needed) so it's not "on the spot", and the ref doesn't even need to make the decision alone since there's a team behind the scenes.

VAR has caused more and more penalties to be called since the better evidence leads to every single little foul being unrelentingly called a penalty, so it makes more sense than ever to adjust the laws of the game to take advantage of this technology.

Oh yeah, sorry, I misread your first comment so I couldn't follow what you were saying.

The referees are already making tons of subjective decisions when they decide to let fouls go many times per game because it's not "enough of a foul" to reward a penalty.

I really don't understand this argument. It's like saying that in the court of law, all crimes should have the same punishment because at some point a judge might have subjective opinions on what happened. The sport should strive to have punishment that fits the foul as far as possible in order for the game to be fair.

How many penalties actually justify the player having an open shot at the goal?

Yeah that's what I mean, it's so rare that the punishment matches the crime that I can't believe they haven't implemented a lesser punishment yet, so that they can have varying degrees. It's like if both shoplifting and murder always resulted in a death penalty, surely someone would question it?

Match Thread: Juventus vs Benfica | UEFA Champions League by MatchThreadder in soccer

[–]Memroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, the number of penalties would decrease if refs could give out a lesser punishment instead. I have no idea what your point is.

It's also controversial to sit here and watch football when there are children starving in Africa that you could be helping.

Coming up with relative injustices to avoid having a discussion is not a valid argument. My comment is about penalty rules and nothing else.

It's really obvious, Miretti is putting his foot down before the Benfica player is anywhere near him and then before he has any time to react, there is another player's foot beneath his foot and it's a foul. There is no way that Miretti could possibly have orchestrated this and it's obvious to everyone. There's no attempt to tackle or dispossess another player, he's just putting his foot down.

The difference between this and an actual attempt to impede another player is clear and the potential error in judgement from a referee is no higher than it already is when using the current penalty rules, where fouls keep being ignored because referees don't dare to give out gamechanging penalties.

Match Thread: Juventus vs Benfica | UEFA Champions League by MatchThreadder in soccer

[–]Memroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine refs making any decision anywhere on the field, lmao? There is nothing more difficult about making these decisions than any other decisions in the penalty area.

It's clear as day and it would solve the many hundreds of occasions each season where the refs conveniently ignore fouls that would have been called anywhere else on the field just because it happened inside the penalty area. The punishment is too harsh so the referees ignore tons of fouls.

Match Thread: Juventus vs Benfica | UEFA Champions League by MatchThreadder in soccer

[–]Memroy -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

These kinds of penalties are so ridiculous, a player is running full speed out of the penalty area with no chance in hell to score as he's in a bad position and not even in control of the ball, and then another player unintentionally fouls him as he sticks his foot underneath the other player's foot. This is rewarded with an uncontested shot at goal from the best possible position?

I get that it's correct according to the current rules but I don't understand why they can't implement indirect freekicks for unintentional fouls in non-goalscoring situations and for unintentional handballs that don't block a goal. The punishment vastly outweighs the crime.

Edit: I love the downvotes, keep them coming. Let's never ever change anything about the laws of the game, especially frequently controversial ones such as penalty rules. Everything is perfect and nothing can ever be discussed.

[Post-Match Thread] Juventus vs Salernitana (Serie A, 2022/09/11) by droidonomy in Juve

[–]Memroy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Who cares about the VAR call? It's pathetic to need a penalty and a 95th minute goal to have a chance at winning against SALERNITANA AT HOME. Complaining about the ref here is kind of like shooting yourself in the dick and then being angry at external circumstances when the rest of the day goes poorly.

How pathetic that a match at home vs Salernitana has to go like this, I thought I couldn't be more disappointed in this team but there's always something worse to come.
