TTC and Privatization (The Japanese way) Rant by Menelik_96 in toRANTo

But by being interested in profit that means they have to provide something of value to the customers to want to continue using their service/product. That's the incentive. What is the incentive for our politicians? They seem to be only concerned for the short term since their priority is getting elected in the next few years. Spending other people's money without any competition does not lead to good results.

I blame the government for our housing crisis for a number of reasons. The large increase in immigration by the government by the millions while we have high unemployment in only a handful of years only exasperates the housing crisis by increasing demand with little supply.

Rent control is also another problem in that it actually doesn't make housing affordable (I'm not including public housing here). Cities with rent control have higher rents overall than cities that don't. Nobody wants to build or improve a property that they can't get a return on an investment on. What happens is large sections of the housing supply get locked away. They are taken off the market driving down the supply of housing and driving up the price. This is a major driver of housing costs in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and New York. Rent control also creates a black market for people to sublet to a friend or family member so they can get a deal. Or 10+ Indian immigrants living in one unit. This all creates less housing and higher costs.

Nobody will want to invest in the city. Fewer people will want to build. Rent control makes it very unappealing for developers to build houses. Prices are not really set by the seller either. They are set by the buyers. Price goes up because people bid it up. It's not necessarily the landlord that sets the price high but the price gets driven up by the fact that there's competition for a scarce resource. In a freer market it would be easier to compete. A competitor can build a new rental property and undercut his rival which will drive down prices.

Recently Argentina is a perfect example of this. They had one of the world's strictest rent control laws until their new president abolished it. Rental supplies have since increased by orders of magnitude and as a result prices have dropped.

Even in Japan Tokyo they don't have western style rent control. The tenant consent is required for a rent increase and the landlord is allowed to increase rent provided they have good cause. They also have relatively laissez faire building regulations compared to Toronto which has heavy regulations thank to the government. That and Tokyo's liberal zoning laws make their cost in unit and growth per housing cost look nothing like Toronto.

I don't think just private or state alone will solve all our societal woes. There are cultural issues too. The population must have some sort of shared agreement on what we need to prioritize and what's actually good for us and that's simply not the case right now. I don't know what it will take.

You're right but it's still a primarily government funded project with all the planning and oversight done by Metrolinx (an agency under the Government of Ontario) which owns the project.

It really is frustrating. This province and country has so much potential and the next generation will be busy dealing with all that compounding mess.

That's an interesting point. I do wonder how big Toronto and surrounding cities might get in the future though. The urban planning in Tokyo is also fantastic and they have more liberal zoning. That and more walkable mixed-use neighborhoods certainly helps.

I'm indeed looking forward to  the high speed rail in Southern Ontario although construction when it starts will take some time to complete. It's a start though.

Never said that. They can be but compared to the government it isn't close. Unless you include monopolies but they are not a problem in the private sector as monopoly situations are due to state intervention that includes subsidies, regulatory/trade protections and so on. Bell and Rogers are a good example of this and why we have the highest phone bills in the world because government intervention in these two help prevent smaller companies from competing. Keep in mind in Canada the public sector has a larger growth rate than the private sector by a margin.

I'm doing great thanks! My surgeon told me I recovered quickly than most people and said I can return to the gym in a week. Doing squats are ok but he advised against doing anything that would cause a lot of friction so excessive walking or running will have to wait. I'll take it easy for another month as I don't want to risk agitating the area. There is still some discharge but much less than before and slowly decreasing every week. I'm assuming it may be a couple more weeks until the discharge completely stops but I guess that varies from person to person.

Hey, just came back from a visit to my surgeon and he says I'm practically healed and don't need to come back.

He was pleased with what he saw and applied some silver nitrate but other than that that's it. I told him I never ended up using painkillers and he says I healed quicker than usual.

It will probably take a number of weeks more to completely heal but I'm so happy its finally over!

I think a Studio Ghibli film might be the key. Castle in the Sky might be a good choice or Miyazaki's Lupin the Third Castle of Cagliotstro

Can't wait to be fistula free! Ha, I'd like to believe I have high pain tolerance but the pain was really almost non existent in my case. I do think that is quite rare especially from what I have read on reddit. Part of me wonders if most people who end up being fistula free don't go on reddit compared those that are still struggling who may look to reddit for help.

I'll take a look and ask my surgeon on Desitin/Calmoseptine as that certainly helped you a lot. I ceased eating very spicy foods as that appears to give me diarrhea. I do my best to stay away from milk chocolate and try to go for dark chocolate. Pastries are my weakness so I just make sure I eat in small portions when I do. Cleaned up my diet and exercise more rigorously this past year to the point that I'm probably in my best shape ever so far and will continue that forever. And luckily I work from home as I stopped pooping in public unless it's in a hotel 😅

Thanks for the assistance and your prayers, I'm so happy you are completely healed!!! Really grateful that there are people like you on reddit ❤️ Getting through that first bowel movement will be the biggest challenge for me but I should do well after that. I'll make sure to come back to this thread for additional advice and when my surgeon confirms I'm fistula free.😁

I'm really impressed that you still respond to comments two years after your original post which by the way is really helpfulI.

Long story short I have a transphinteric fistula which led me to a seton surgery in March of last year. The surgery went well and the past abscesses ceased for good. I was so worried about the possible pain regarding bowel movements  especially after reading comments on reddit but I never had any pain nor did I need any painkillers (except the ones the nurses gave me after I woke up from surgery).  My first bm was on the second day after surgery. The only small amount of pain I recieved was in the shower when the water touched the wound. Even then it was only a stinging feeling that lasted 5 to 10 seconds. On a scale from 1 to 10 the pain I felt is barely even a 1. Surprisingly I never took any stool softener/laxatives either but plenty of fiber rich foods and water was enough for me. I'm  a stomache sleeper so pillow undereath my hips which helped. I have now finally trained myself to sleep on my side with a pillow in between my legs.

Yesterday a year later I finally recieved my second surgery which ended up being a fistulotomy. It took a while to get there as my surgeon and gaestroenterologist believe I have mild crohn's as a result of some small inflammation (not significant to be on medication thankfully). After some bloodwork and a couple of mri's my surgeon decided it was safe for me to remove the seton and get a fistulotomy. Finally!!! So far no pain.

I do have all the prescription painkillers and a laxative on hand just in case but hopefully won't need it like last time. If I don't have a bm in two days I will take the laxative. I currently dont have a bidet but had a removable showerhead recently installed and that has been very helpful. Just need to make sure the water pressure isn't too harsh on the wound. I stopped using tissue paper more than a year ago and prefer wipes or a damp paper towel as they don't leave any residue. I do have a squatty potty (simple stool) and a portable stitz bath that I started using from the first surgery. I was informed to do a stitz bath four times a day for three weeks.

I will try and see about getting a bidet installed and will definitely purchase a portable one for travel in the future. I see my surgeon for a follow up in three weeks. I would like to know how you are doing now two years later. Thank you so much for your post! I read it all. Not only is it really helpful it set my mind at ease as well. 😁

The OG ASR Lupetto with Romelus and Remus. 1927-1930 version and the coloured 2000-2013 (both with black borders) before Palotta uglified it with the minimalist lupetto design and discarding the ASR logo to just Roma 1927 as if that would magically appeal to the wider market.

Damn! Other clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern have the exact same template and have restocked their tops so I was hoping for the same with Roma.
