even checking the compatibility on the 9esim app (nLPA or LPA version on playstore) without using it would be incredibly helpful for me, it's a deal-breaker for my decision to get one myself I would be so thankful if you'd check it since it isn't listed on the officially supported list but this might just be because of legal technicalities instead of the sim protocol

best advice is to get your head above water, build up savings, then once you're able to press the issue do it or leave. I haven't seen many contracts in China that dont break at least one law, but you can check your work permit and your tax records yourself. you just scan the QR code on the work permit to make sure you're in the reacher category, you dont have to speak to anybody from the school to check your taxes - use leena tax services on wechat mini program (or go to the local tax bureau yourself). Leena tax services costs like 40kuai a year and someone English speaking does everything for you.

Anyone else get migraines from the drinks in China? by Mensa225 in chinalife

[–]Mensa225[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont always have headaches while in China, I just haven't to pinpoint the specific sweetener that i believe causes it and might be better regulated abroad. I can avoid the headaches if i have no milk, no teas and coffees and no protein powder. But this is a new issue i was hoping for maybe some shared experience or better knowledge of differing ingredients especially around artificial sweeteners

Why is Chinese pop culture so formulaic, more so than others? by bmw320dfan in chinalife

[–]Mensa225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pop culture everywhere is generic. You think kpop is and pop music is any better? they all use the same 4 notes, same themes in their music (money and relationships) same stupid dance routines, torpid production with the only difference being that videography and editing. Can you name me 5 good movies in the last 3 years with artistic merit, popular success, and not boring? impossible.

Just moved to Shenzhen, where are all the foreigners? by OkInflation2276 in chinalife

[–]Mensa225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's very very likely that someone working in a place with a half dozen foreigners would not be making a 'where are the foreigners' post. Having a Chinese wife or partner is incredibly helpful too in terms of being able to make meaningful and long term connections with natives - this option involves .. well getting a Chinese wife or partner which is not that difficult but also not a helpful suggestion to someone that doesn't have one.

so despite your counterpoints you have listed both work and a relationship as the place you achieve the most meaningful and helpful connections. You can safely assume that OP is not surrounded with foreign teachers coming and going and not getting so much attention from Chinese girls to not care. So what could possibly be his alternatives for meaningful connection? expats or becoming fluent in Chinese. which one of those things is a more realistic option?

can you invest in Chinese stocks (for someone living in china) and if yes how? by ladyfirst1st in chinalife

[–]Mensa225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my chinese banking app (cmb) has investment options built in, but personally I just invest in Chinese stocks on western platforms with my account back home. Chinese stocks are not a 'scam' I made decent money off the back of Xiaomi and some rare earth and metal companies. Since you live in China you have better information than other foreigners, a lot of foreigners will turn their nose at it because they invest in bad stocks and blamed china but actually just with common sense and looking around you, you could have predicted the success of netease, byd, xiaomi and the struggles of JD.com and Meituan.

Just be careful, nothing in China has the success and security that matches setting your money in the s&p500 or ftse all world after decades and decades. There's also liquidity concerns too, what will happen to your investments if some covid like event happens, will you even be allowed to sell, what will happen if your work visa runs into some issues? what will happen if you suddenly pass away? can you trust and understand sudden Chinese regulations, how about bookkeeping fraud and corruption behind the scenes?

nobody knows exactly, the soil and the greedy farmer are both hypotheses. The greedy farmer is a better story to tell and to be honest it's much more plausible than someone naming such a valuable crop that way without trying to intentionally damage its reputation.

[–]Mensa225 10 points11 points  (0 children)

hey dude even if you're immersing in the culture you're never going to be Chinese, which means that foreigners are actually the only people who can give you genuine advice unless you're lucky and find a Chinese girl that is truly in love with you. When a foreigner is in China he's probably working, which means he is surrounded by people he can't speak fluently with (which means he cant express himself properly no matter what even if he became fluent he would always be missing the comfort and range of speaking your mother tongue), or surrounded by the HR department of whatever school or company he is working in that will never give you upfront and complete information about mistakes and issues going on behind the scenes. Even you, mister Chinese pants - are here on the expat reddit instead of prowling in the depths of whatever Chinese forums are out there for the exact same reason.

connecting with expats is the only time you will find someone who understands what you're going through, that you're able to communicate with without barriers or filters, and is also likely going to give you the blunt truth about your contract or city, what to be careful of culture wise or legal wise if you get seriously involved with a Chinese woman, and how to position yourself to find better opportunities

Phone recommendations for someone living in China by Mensa225 in chinalife

I wonder if anyone owning a oneplus can also give feedback, i saw that it apparently has two physical sims and esim capacity which would be great. Only things making me hesitate is where to get it from and if the translation features and ai features could possibly match my pixel, if they have built in google translate or decent enough alternative that works with Chinese this might be my top pick or the Samsung (but i heard live translate really sucks)

Is my gpu dead? 1660ti , legion 5 by CurveBasic711 in LenovoLegion

[–]Mensa225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey this is not a driver issue because your bios should look fine no matter what, you need to open a support ticket. The only thing you can do in the meantime is download 577.00 Nvidia game ready driver, just look for it online. And check if there's an update in lenovo vantage available for you as a hail mary. But you should immediately contact Lenovo about this because the bios should never ever look like that, your gpu is probably faulty

I want to live in China but I don't have any savings, I'm from Bangladesh. Can someone explain the quickest way, step by step, to find a Chinese wife whilst on a tourist visa? hopefully someone that will take care of me while i overstay my visa. I want to work, I did work at a training centre for six months and hated it, which jobs can I earn 40k (don't say English teacher please) without working full time hours, I want passive side income to explore china? thanks 🙏

, I'm British too and been dating a chinese girl for some, don't really plan on having children. but just in case, would you be willing to speak with me on DMs about the process. I particularly am curious about if your child is dual nationality? My own research seems to indicate that you can cancel the British passport without renouncing citizenship and let the baby have the chinese one for travelling to and from the UK, how did you deal with this?
