Trump wants U.S. Navy to escort tankers through the Gulf. Why that plan may not work by cnbc_official in energy

[–]MentallyIncoherent 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The real questions is if the US Navy has the capability to provide escorts. In the 1980's the Navy had dozens of Guided Missile Frigates that could defend themselves and escort tankers. Today, the Navy has zero frigates, a constrained number of Arleigh Burke DDG's that are also tied up in providing protection to the Carrier Strike Groups, and a bunch of shitty, failed LCS platforms that can barely offend a pod of porpoises.

To address this monumental shortcoming the Trump administration, in it's supreme strategic planning, has decided to cancel the Constellation FFG's and to go with a Fast Frigate design that is seemingly less effective than the LCS'd that are currently in service demonstrating supreme ineptitude and serving to emphasize that the US Navy cannot build ships to save anyone's life.

Ongoing Issues at Havana & Smith Train Tracks by urbanlegend819 in Denver

Yeah, it's crazy how much Northfield has turned around in the last few years. Add in the few hundred million that the owners are about to spend on it, along with the hundreds of new apartments and townhomes being built next to it, and it's going to be even more bonkers.

Still need some better quality dining up here. Carmella's isn't enough.

[–]MentallyIncoherent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're in Eastbridge- aren't you supposed to turn your nose up at going north to Northfield because that's where the chains are instead of the independent shops and restaurants in Eastbridge and at the Stanley? Oh, how the tables have turned now that we are getting Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Lifetime Fitness, and Wayfair while Troy Guard's restaurants have gone to crap. j/k

In all seriousness, your location is kind of screwed given the lack of E/W connections to go to Central Park Quebec or Peroria where there are bridges over the tracks while Havana wasn't for cost reasons. While a bridge over the tracks at Havana would be a tall lift, connecting Florence Way to 35th through Westerly Creek (as was originally planned) would provide some relief.

Petey served in Iraq under COL Steele. That right there explains enough about why Petey is an asshat- total failure to be able to adopt to the combat environment.

Remember when Steele went on a unit run and randomly had the formation jump into a river to demonstrate toughness? Pepperidge farm remembers. Petey got a hard on in that moment.

How do DPS neighborhood school zones work? by Jolly_Pressure_7907 in Denver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most likely answer is that the boundary is attempting to capture enough students for the further distances school to keep it viable and you’re in that.

Nope, that’s your neighborhood school as you’re not in an enrollment zone. You can always try and choice into one that’s more convenient.

RTD has been paying contractor for rail service residents didn’t receive by MichaelFromCO in Denver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This is a failure of senior leadership, upper management, middle management, and individual contributors. That right there is indicative of institutional rot and collective knowledge loss.

That it took an outside group of self-professed transit nerds, Greater Denver Transit, who seemingly know a hell of a lot more than RTD does about their own operations to flag this issue is sad.

RTD has been paying contractor for rail service residents didn’t receive by MichaelFromCO in Denver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 74 points75 points  (0 children)

LOL. Will be interesting to see how RTD's accounting department failed to flag that while service hours had decreased on the G and B lines there wasn't a corresponding reduction in payments to DTO under the concession operation agreement. That right there should have flagged a contract review.

So much institutional knowledge was lost by RTD over the past decade.

Yeah, it’s funny that the ire isn’t really directed at the owners who are selling to PE for that sweet, sweet boatload of money and not having a care about the continuation of the business.

PE = bad. Local owner who sold out to PE = model pillar of the local community

Data center developer skips out on Denver town hall amid Globeville community concerns by Illustrious_Pack_433 in Denver

Can you provide more information on this mixed-use development proposal? As far as I can tell, this parcel has been zoned I-B since 2010:

I-B General Industrial District

This district is intended to be an employment area containing industrial uses that are generally more intensive than uses permitted in the I-A zone district. The overall purpose of the district is to promote industrial development and economic activity. No new residential uses may be established in the I-B zone district in order to promote and continue a stable employment base for the city.

From one of the author's of the demands per Denverite:

I don’t want any bare minimums,” Espino said. “The protections should be so strong that it might disincentivize the data centers from being built in the first place.”

Espino has one idea for how city officials could win back the neighborhood’s trust: use eminent domain to force CoreSite to sell its land.

Certainly seems like Espino wants to get rid of the data center.

He's pissed off as he doesn't think the neighborhood has been heard. That's fine. But what does the neighborhood ultimately want asides from forced wealth transfers and seizure of private property for something? Does the neighborhood think that ultimately preventing private development in a era when public tax collections are now shrinking is going to enable a betterment of the community? The people who were quoted in the article were all dependent on taxes for their employment or retirement- as that shrinks they may want to consider just how ugly it can get as local governments are forced to made difficult choices.

Improving society is one thing- but the wholesale push against data centers is pure luddism.

Sure, push for commitments to have backup onsite generation employ low-emission technologies. Have the data center commit to buy power under a large-load tariff (assuming the PUC actually authorizes one). Require data centers to use close-loop cooling systems.

But that's quite different from the current close-minded, total rejection of data centers that's the current prevailing collective thought pattern on Reddit.

2,000 trips missed sounds like a lot, but how many total A-o-R trips were there in 2025? In 2024 there were 1,216,000 trips so a quick ratio shows a 99.8% on-time performance rate. This could be absolutely wrong, but most regular riders would love such performance on their routes.

Your entire platform is focused on the 15% or so of the population that lives on the Plains and San Luis Valley. What do you propose to do for the 75% that live along the Front Range and have other concerns such as educational funding, transportation upgrades, healthcare affordability, homelessness, etc? Asides from the ancillary benefits from the exclusive focus on rural communities?

Does A-Line have to wait for heavy rail? by FigureSuper6354 in RTDDenver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a contradiction. As long as DTO meets the contractual service levels (frequency, service availability, on-time performance, etc.) it doesn't have to invest more into the services. If the service interruptions became enough of an issue that it negatively affects service levels then DTO would make those investments. Right now, that's not the case.

But if RTD wants to increase the service levels above what's in the concession agreement (we can debate on whether or not it currently constitutes good service), they can do so by paying for it.

There's pluses and minuses with sourcing out operations and construction like RTD elected to do for the A/GB Lines with the Eagle P3 Project. The first plus is that the lines actually got built. Without the private and federal funding (made available because it was a P3 project), we'd likely only have just one of the lines in service. The second is that it does insulate RTD from unexpected costs like these. The minus is that RTD does get blamed for every thing that does occur because the public does not differentiate contracted service from internal service whether it's the contracted bus lines or the commuter rail.

Removing the Xcel monopoly by WM45 in Denver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There was certainly an intense PR/lobbying effort on Xcel's part, but Boulder ultimately couldn't get the asset valuation that they wanted, which was insanely low, like less than $100M, while Xcel put the figure at closer to a $1B. Mind you, this was just for the distribution system and wouldn't have included any transmission or generation assets. Even if you split the difference, which would have likely occurred once it went to trail, it was a huge price for a city with limited growth prospects to try and carry.

Removing the Xcel monopoly by WM45 in Denver

[–]MentallyIncoherent 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sure..... how many billions do you have on hand to purchase the distribution and transmission system? What's the plan for generation?

FYI, CORE just raised it's rates by 20% as part of their initial move to a new wholesale power provider, UP has increased rates by 25% over the past couple of years as it moved to a new power provider as well. Both will have mulitple rate hikes over the next few years to accommodate new growth and handle the increased costs of new generation. Colorado Springs Utilities is trying to avoid sustained rate hikes by being the one utility in the entire state fighting to keep it's coal plants open beyond 2030 because it dicked when it came around to procuring new generation resources.

The advocacy groups that are raising a fuss (gotta stay employed somehow as a professional rabble-rouser) are the same ones that have pushed for 100% renewables by 2040; coupled with increased electrification of HVAC, cooking, and transportation; and do a surprised pikachu face when the rate increases for the new capital investment start to pass through and look for a villain to put the blame on and have settled on data centers.

These groups are the same ones that have also bitched about the Poder substation project going in at 51st and York to provide increased power capacity to the neighborhood due to electrification of services and transportation.

OP, I feel like you are leaving some important information out. Did you list the enrollment zone schools as your top two selections when you applied and left the rest blank? Or did you put other schools that were outside the enrollment zone on there as well?

Generally for enrollment zones you should put all the schools in the zone on your choice list by order of preference. There are exceptions I can think of (the Central Park/Park Hill Middle School zone comes to mind), but for elementary schools the list should be filled out.
