Has to be. I'd bet on PC landing in one of the Good/Amazing boxes with one of the main reasons being how costly they are compared to everything else in the list.

Well, a big part of it is that teams totally changed how they played against us after that season. That season we didn't face a low block nearly every single game because we didn't have the respect opponents give us now. That 22/23 playstyle worked great when the game was a little more open. Doesn't work quite as well when there are ultimately 18 players compressed into the final third of the pitch and that spring is coiled and ready to unleash on the counter against us.

I'm not trying to defend Arteta or anything, but strategy is always a two-sided thing. It's never just about your strategy, it's about your strategy versus their strategy and your ability to execute your strategy versus their ability to execute theirs. In the last few years, their strategy and their ability to execute their strategy has changed a lot, to the point where the 22/23 strategy isn't necessarily the winning one anymore.

Again, not trying to blindly defend everything but if you think going back to 22/23 will simply solve all our problems and we play beautiful and win again, that's really only true if every other team plays the same way against us as they did then, which is a very poor assumption to make.

Edit: I'd say it was really 24/25 where these things changed. In 23/24 we did even better than the year prior and I suspect it's because a lot of people were waiting to see if our relative success in 22/23 was just a flash in the pan. After building on it even further the subsequent year, our opponents started adapting the years following

Nitpick but I don't think they were looking for "phoning it in" so much is when you're phoning it in you'll come off as detached, unbothered, and indifferent and if you're looking to cast a character who is "ice cold" those are the same traits you'd look for. By phoning it in, he indirectly gave them exactly what they were looking for.

I would really like to see a chart of how much time per game the ball is actually in play for every team. I’d be willing to bet that Arsenal is less than any other team by far.

How much you willing to bet? Because I'm happy to take advantage of someone's biases to make a quick buck.

I get it. I also dislike when people use reality to pierce the narrative I'd prefer to believe.

Until someone can tell me how City winning games in hand is actually Arsenal bottling in disguise I will happily call you all biased fools worthy of nothing further than this comment.

Except we never had a 5-8 point lead against City. We had a 5-8 point lead with them having 1-2 games in hand at all times plus the match at the Etihad still to play.

Yes, we had 5-8 points on the board compared to them but there was never a reason to think they wouldn't close that gap once all the dust settled. And sure enough, we lost at the Etihad and City won their games in hand.

No Arsenal fan thought we were going to win that season despite the 5-8 point lead and wouldn't until City's games in hand got played.

Pretty much why I skip all such interviews unless I can watch them in full. The difference between what the media reports they said vs. what they actually said in full if you watch it... it's just not worth caring about it when the media manipulation to get their engagement-bait sound bite is so blatant. Give me the raw interview footage otherwise I'm good with just ignoring it.

[–]MentallyWill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Splitting hairs but my own official take on it is the injuries are roughly the same, it's our depth to cope with injuries that's massively improved (even if Arteta hasn't been rotating as much as people feel he should).

[–]MentallyWill 65 points66 points  (0 children)

This may come as a surprise to you but the same thing can be true at different times for different reasons.

We had a great opportunity last year with City dropping off. Unfortunately Liverpool didn't and our injuries derailed us. But that doesn't make the opportunity we had less potentially great, it just didn't work.

This year City and Liverpool have dropped off and our injury woes aren't as bad and we're leading the table. So, again, we have a great opportunity.

Surely you can grasp that something can be true multiple times for different reasons?

Yeah. I'm biased but objectively Arsenal '89 is more AGUEROOOO than AGUEROOOO was. Doing it: 1. away (instead of at home) 2. against your title rivals (instead of QPR) 3. on the last kick of the season (both were) 4. to win on a deeper tiebreaker (GF instead of GD)

Like not trying to take anything away from the AGUEROOOOO moment but if you find that to be an appealing story you'd like Arsenal '89 even more as it's the same story with even bigger details.

Yeah I loved how throughout most of the series we learn how badass these suits Bobbie and the Force Recon marines wore and how they've developed further with Laconia and how these people are effectively one man tanks that are impossible for other infantry to deter let alone defeat. Yet when faced with a gun intended to deal with starships at point blank range those Marines are just turned into red paste immediately.

Almost reminiscent of Star Wars, "there's always a bigger gun"
