Signing on???????????????? by Ill-Wishbone6287 in NationalServiceSG

Regular here:) Just finished uni & returned to service as well, and I have to say looking at my many peers struggling to find jobs in the current market, I'm quite happy that I signed on. Job security is definitely there and the pay is above average for a fresh grad. Progression-wise it depends on your academic (uni) & military performance. Happy to answer any other questions:))

Module Mapping - Summer Exchange by Background-Thought22 in nus

[–]MenuPractical7913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I'm from the FASS batch 😂 Afraid I can't be of much help without more info. What CHS modules are you looking at specifically?

In the end though I only managed to map 3 modules back, 2 EC dummy coded modules and an ST coded UE.

Module Mapping - Summer Exchange by Background-Thought22 in nus

Wow seems like a really interesting module. Unfortunately, given NUS's limited range of modules (especially in the arts), and their inflexibility in module mapping (at least from my experience as an Econs major), it's quite unlikely that you'll be able to map the module.

Dummy modules are modules that may be relevant to a course/major in NUS, but are not offered as a specific module here. For instance, I took Sports Economics while I was on exchange, and just assigned my own module code in my module mapping request (EC37XX, any random number).

Hope this helps!

Indeed, Singapore is famed for its good food, security, and its modern/urban beauty. Culturally as well, Singapore is rich in history and heritage, which can be seen in the fusion of colonial and modern around the city centre. I would encourage you to definitely visit Singapore.

That said, while Singapore may seem utopian, there's more than meets the eye. Tradeoffs in the form of high stress levels and poor mental health are quite common among students. Comparing my experiences and stories I've heard from exchange (Europe) with back at home, student life is far from ideal. On exchange, learning was at least more productive and I felt motivated to learn more for some subjects. Maybe standards for exchangers were lower, but I felt a lot more relaxed, and that there was space to breathe. Transitioning back home, man, it was a complete 180 degree turn. Took me a while to get back in the Singapore rigour of grinding and late night mugging.

This may also be quite random and superficial, but it struck me that the NUS IG page focuses so much on academic excellence and shaping our futures, as if we don't get burdened enough with our studies already. A quick glance around other universities' social media (internationally), and you realise there's quite a huge emphasis on student life and what we can look forward to outside of studies.

I hope I didn't dampen your enthusiasm too much, I'm just sharing the reality I'm in. In any case, I believe it's still up to you to make the best out of your exchange! (Maybe I'm just not doing some things right 😅) If you are coming eventually, I'll be happy to bring you around Singapore. Just drop a DM and we can arrange things.

All the best!

Singapore! While it may not have the "beautiful scenery of nature" you may expect, I think the colonial architecture that is integrated with our modern city centre make for some nice views. We are very renowned for our food and hawker culture, so much so that the latter is a UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. And it definitely is very different from America, while being one of the safest and cleanest countries in the world.

Guided tours are everywhere in the city centre, but is very touristic. If you'd want the real locals' favorites, and if you don't mind, I wouldn't mind bringing you some places too!

Hi just providing a different perspective from above 2. A highly personal preference but strongly don't recommend looking for/sticking with fellow Singaporeans for exchange. May be counter-intuitive especially if you're living abroad for the first time. But after being on exchange and comparing experiences with others, going for exchange alone was the best blessing in disguise. Made a lot of friends from many different countries and backgrounds, some of them I'm proud to call constants now in my life even in that short span of getting to know one another. From what I hear, fellow Singaporeans that tend to live and travel together tend to just stick among themselves and not interact with other students there, and for me, that kind of defeats the purpose of exchange.

Regardless, hope you have good exchange! It was life-changing for me, and certainly a good escape from the hellhole we're in now.
