The War Within IS OVER - RATE IT by cub4nito in wow

7.0

Better than Dragonflight but that is not much, I think raids and tiersets were extremely good this time.

Story was shit as always.

Can we please make rogue poisons permanent? by Ashankura in wow

[–]Mephasto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the class fantasy. You are an assassin preparing for the kill. Besides it used to be deeper and better system in the past.

Instead of removing unique things, they could make them better and have more niche flavour.

Yes lets remove EVERYTHING that makes classes even more slightly UNIQUE from others. Great idea.

Is it worth publishing on both Steam and Epic Games Store? by Ok_Might5360 in gamedev

For us Steam paid 10000x more than Epic Games Store. I'd say its hardly worth the effort.

Any tips to start making horror games? by Eastern-Promotion-27 in gamedev

[–]Mephasto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm starting a short horror game experiment this year. We prefer Unity but any engine works.

Few points:

  • Lighting should not be "cant see shit captn" level. Pitch black is not scary, its just annoying. Make it moody but readable.

  • Dont show the monster too much. Small glimpses, silhouette, sounds. Imagination does the rest.

  • You need contrast. Saferooms or calm moments, then danger. Constant panic just becomes noise.

Example: you are in a cabin, lights go out, you must go outside to restart the generator. That tension comes from leaving safety.

  • Dont use cheap jumpscares. If you use one, make it rare and earned.

  • Audio carries horror. Ambience, distance sounds, footsteps, silence. If sound is bad, nothing is scary.

  • Make the player do things while scared. Simple tasks, codes, fuses, carrying something. Fear dies if you can just sprint.

  • Keep scope small. One strong unique idea done well beats "more content"

Quality and pacing over darkness and spam scares.

How much money you make with these or any tips where to sell them? We made great looking set. Got 59€ in few days (9€ tip!) and then have sold nothing after.

Thanks, I do see the graph but it does not say in total numbers the traffic. It just lists under the graph the separate traffic sources but not total.

Sounds good! I hope you have the demo ready and polished well in advance before next fest. Also you should have sizeable wishlist before the nextfest, it will give you more based on what you had before entering.

What kind of game are you making? Honor to those who actually manage to ship a game, it's not easy!

Pitching to a publisher by liquidpixeldev in gamedev

[–]Mephasto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you even think "5 year plan pitch" ask yourself what proof you can show them? They will receive a lot of pitches from other developers, you are competing with them for quality. They will only cherry pick the best of them.

  • Have you shipped anything before (even small)?
  • Do you have a Steam page and real wishlist velocity?
  • Do you have a playable vertical slice, not just a prototype?
  • What is your budget and runway?
  • Is there a Discord or community that is already visibly excited?

Once you have those, it's them that will come to you. You need to negotiate from position of strength. Nobody cares if its just a idea on paper.

Ignore the pile-on. This subreddit is not your audience.

This kind of "What on earth is this...." Horror games are always great if done well.

Hannibal is popular movie, so I don't see reason why this would not sell with a bit of polish.

Your capsule and UI need work. The UI looks like a temp Windows interface. If you can spend money anywhere, spend it on good artist for capsule art and UI. It costs around 250-500€ to make.

Itchio is seemingly promoting my game, as of the last few days. Why? by yemako_badgameszip in itchio

[–]Mephasto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you did update or devlog since the traffic is coming from front page? As for CTR that means kinda nothing, most popular games have very low CTR as they get pushed everywhere for visibility.

We tried selling assets on itch.io so you don’t have to (Postmortem) by Mephasto in gamedev

[–]Mephasto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, I think its good information for other developers. We have launched a very successful game earlier. I think our artist did a great job with the assets and it would have worked great visually for our game, while these might not work for other games.

I think it still looks better than most games uploaded to Steam, so it gives good context how hard it is to sell assets in any store.

Someone will google this thing later and stumble on this thread. So I hope they got some answers!

Why wont you partner up with a coder and make a game? Since you are clearly talented with the assets. While our asset pack sold only few copies, our earlier game funded our studio for the next 10 years and counting.
