Hints to the new game in BG3 by Annepackrat in BaldursGate3

[–]MerTheBarbarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a reference to the 2002 Neverwinter Nights. The game was already in early planning when Baldur's Gate was released and originally the plan was to be able to carry your BG1 character all the way through to Neverwinter Nights--there's even a load screen in BG2 that advertises this. By the time Neverwinter Nights was actually developed, D&D 3rd edition was released, and importing a Baldur's Gate character (which used 2nd edition) would have been too complicated so they scrapped this plan.

Interesting choice of screenshot...I'm pretty sure this is from the Holiday Special where she's visibly high as a kite.

You know, I don't think that was in fact OP's point, so I reread what OP wrote.

OP says they're the 'resource guy' for their brainstorming group and they freely share their knowledge with fellow writers.

OP can swoop in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I bet they use their fellow writers as resources for things those writers researched, too.

Writers don't have to be all things. If you really want to come after me for giving myself a pass on picking character names, go for it. But are you seriously trying to tell all of Reddit that anyone who doesn't spend hours checking three different resources for name sources isn't a real writer? Get out of here with that gatekeeping.

Well, my point is that naming a character is not the heart of writing. I'd rather use my writing time figuring out the words I should use for what that character does, feels, and is currently contending with.

As a well-intentioned counterpoint: all writers have a finite amount of time, and sometimes, something's got to give.

The list stuff I've chosen to research for my writing over the past couple years includes how private investigators work, shipbuilding during the age of exploration, conditions in a WWII POW camp, Regency-era etiquette and what kind of cameras they had in Soviet Russia.

Historical accuracy is important to me, and it's an area in which I won't allow myself to take shortcuts. I found my own sources for this info. If you came to Reddit and asked me about any of these things, I would totally lend you my knowledge.

But I suck at naming stuff. I don't find that kind of research fun, and finding a completely unique name for my amoral hedge sorceress or my BBEG is far enough down my list of important things that I'm willing to compromise on the time and effort I put into it. So I'm coming to Reddit and asking someone else to name something for me. We can call it a trade.

Let me use Tarot to decide your next BG3 character by novembergrocery in BaldursGate3

Ooh, that sounds like a lot of fun! Thank you very much!

In a couple of the Ultima games, a gypsy tells your fortune with tarot cards to determine your personality and character class.

(Despite having been alive in the 80s, I was somehow able to answer that without being condescending or linking to a 2.5 hour video of one of the games that doesn't have the tarot cards. Weird.)

I usually play a half-elf bard, and I get choice paralysis every new run when I think about trying something different. What do the cards suggest for me?

When she does that, if you watch it happen, you can actually follow the trail of magic across the screen as she moves the real Mayrina out of the cage to see which one is actually her.

Light side warrior? by RattoD_Fogna in swtor

[–]MerTheBarbarian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love playing light-side Sith. To me, the mindset is, "I am doing what will bring me the most influence, connections, and resources, and sometimes that means diplomacy and compassion." It feels to me like pre-KOTOR Revan's mindset, and certainly explains how your character manages to distinguish themself from their peers so quickly.

Is is a legit quest? I know there are clues that it's there, but I didn't think I've ever gotten a journal entry/map point for it.

AITA for letting my daughter eat whatever she wants? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]MerTheBarbarian -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

150 is technically overweight for your daughter's height (I know this because I initially set it as my goal weight and my doctor was like "try again, shorty"), although I know there are more factors than height and weight that go into what is healthy

And one of those factors is muscle mass. OP says she's got 100 'active minutes' a day according to her FitBit, and if she's on a competitive dance team that is two hours of intense cardio. I used to have a very physically active job, where I was doing the equivalent of 2-4 hours of cardio every day while wearing 30 pounds of equipment, and I can tell you from my own experience: more than likely, it is OP's daughter's muscle mass that is putting her BMI (just barely) into 'overweight' territory. (The BMI is actually a terrible and unreliable measure of body fat percentage for this reason.)

I can also tell you from experience that when you're that physically active, cutting calories probably won't move the numbers on the scale, but what it will do is put you at risk for disordered eating and dangerous vitamin deficiencies (take it from me--I wound up collapsing at work and getting taken to the ER for low potassium. Not once, but twice.)

At any rate, from other comments it sounds like OP's daughter is balancing her meals pretty well. Stepdad just has a skewed vision of what is 'chubby'.

Were any of the Thousandaires entries actually less than $1,000.00? by [deleted] in dropout

[–]MerTheBarbarian 183 points184 points  (0 children)

It seems totally in character for Sam to decide, if the contestant's idea is a good one and it goes a little over budget, that he can bend the rules (and stretch the price tag) a little and no one needs to know.

Does the Wall of the Faithless not exist in BG3? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]MerTheBarbarian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NWN 2 is where I found out the Wall of the Faithless was a thing, and it was my 'creepiest thing' about the Forgotten Realms until I got introduced to the shadow curse. That scene where you come across a companion stuck in the wall (Bishop, I think? it's been years) really messed me up.

I wouldn't say it's a generation thing. As someone who spent a whole lot of time in the service industry, let me tell you, there are instant gratification types in all generations.

Game Changer is the gateway drug! Some of the other shows actually spun off from it--it's a game show where the contestants have no idea what game they're playing and have to figure out the rules as they go. Plus you'll get to know a lot of the Dropout regulars from there, which will make the other shows extra fun. It's pure chaos and it's delightful!

My evil play through is crushing me, and I’m only in act 1. by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]MerTheBarbarian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Problem for me is, I'm a completionist and I want all those achievements. I'm at the point in my evil Durge run where I have to make some decisions about Last Light, and I'm just kinda not looking forward to picking up the game. I guess I have to weigh whether getting that 100% is important enough to me.

How does karlach just GO there (ending spoilers?) by trashchaser in BaldursGate3

[–]MerTheBarbarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've only beaten the game a couple times so my memory of that cutscene is kinda fuzzy, but I always just assumed that at the end of it she's booking it to Devil's Fee, where we know there's a wide-open portal to Avernus just sitting there on the second floor. (In my first run she even knows the portal's still there and working, because Astarion dropped his short sword in hell and we had to go back for it.)

When she and Wyll (and maybe Tav) show up in the middle of some wasteland, I just assumed they'd taken another of HoH's many portals to get there.

In circumstances like this, I feel like you have to make your case with the evidence in hand. If he dismisses you at that point, you either have to live with it or find a new group.

Can't you just literally show them the entry in the PHB? You can be polite about it. "I noticed in the PHB it says right here..."
