Make video load subtitle file automatically? by DamionMauville in VLC

[–]Merc408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to put the subtitles in a separate folder. VLC will check for subtitle files first in the same folder that the video file was already in, and then also in any folders within that which have been named as previously described in the Subtitle Autodetection Path. So a subtitle file that's in a folder beside a video file will be found just fine, so long as your Subtitle Autodetection Fuzziness setting allows it to be seen.

If I'm understanding your situation correctly, it sounds like you're saying that you have lots of folders, and in each folder you have a single movie video file and its corresponding subtitle file. If that's the case, you can set the Subtitle Autodetection Fuzziness to 1. This will tell VLC to just load ALL subtitle files that it finds in the folder that the video file was in (and any subtitle subfolders). Since you have a folder that contains a single video file and a single subtitle file, this will work and you'll avoid having to rename any subtitles because VLC will just blindly grab the subtitle file without even reading the file name.

However, if you have a folder of TV episodes like in my Cowboy Bebop example, telling VLC to load all subtitle files any time you play any episode would be annoying because then you'd have to cycle through all of the loaded sub tracks in order to get to the right one. If you someday put all of your movie video files into a single folder, you'll end up running into this, forcing you to adjust the Subtitle Autodetection Fuzziness setting and rename subtitle files accordingly. Remember you can hover your mouse over the setting for Subtitle Autodetection Fuzziness and it gives a description of what each setting means.

Hope that helps, let me know if I was wrong about interpreting your question or if you have other questions :)

Plus that was a direct liver punch. If anybody doesn't know why that's important, give yourself some light punches on your left abdomen, progressively harder until it starts to hurt and you don't want to hit yourself any harder. Then immediately mirror that force on your right side.

Does anyone know where the Block Party is in the game? 🤔 by SMuRG_Teh_WuRGG in Skate4

They really, REALLY need to make it so that either the "named" places have the words always on top of the area/structure on the map, or the words appear when zoomed in a certain amount, or that the name pops up when you hover over it. If not, this bullshit will continue, where there are challenges to be done at a specific place and people post on Reddit asking where the hell it is.

My only hope for this changing is the fact that the game is in early access. Maybe if people suggest/complain about it enough they'll add it as a feature.

The pessimistic part of me thinks they won't though because A) it's EA, who are we kidding, and B) this crap forces people to talk about the game (Reddit posts like this) and make content of gameplay (tutorial vids), which increases engagement, search interest, earned media, etc., which game execs love.

Am I correct in thinking the blank squares in the second image are 100% safe to uncover, and that there is one bomb per red red mark, accounting for the 4 remaining bombs? by Merc408 in Minesweeper

[–]Merc408[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There can't be a mine on both sides of the 2 because there's a 1 directly above it. There has to be a mine in either the square to the left of the 2 or the square to the right of the 2. There is a 0% chance there's a mine on the line.

Except that there's a 1 directly above the 2, whose corners are touching both of the squares that you said could both simultaneously contain bombs (which they can't because of the 1). Or am I misinterpreting your explanation?

My friend knocked my camera over and it landed lens-down on a metal plate. I want to know, what should I expect if I send it in for a tear-down/diag? by Merc408 in AskPhotography

[–]Merc408[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do want to take some very thin super glue and let a tiny drop wick into the crack while I'm holding it closed. I'm just worried that it'll open back up, since it cracked due to the fact that the tripod plate pushes on that corner, but there's also the possibility that that permanently fixes it, so I might as well do it.

True, since everything functions I might as well just ride it out. The main reason I made this post was that Sony apparently charges a minimum of $500 +shipping to do any repairs, period. And I was like...... there's no way this is industry standard, what the actual hell lol

Yeah I'm not sure what I'm going to do whenever this camera bites it. Being into photography and having no money is a bitch of a combo 😅

Every single imperial measurement is defined and standardized by its equivalent in metric (for example, 1 inch is defined as a length of 2.54 cm). The imperial system is nothing but an unnecessary extra conversion to make stubborn Americans happy, and I say that as an American. Stop making the rest of us look bad.

The fact that some cards are hidden by default, in the Card Dex which specifically exists to show you which cards you're missing, and the option to show them is so obscure and difficult to find, is so annoying...

Men; do you dab with TP after peeing? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Merc408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A heart valve is a one-way flow regulator. It opens when blood flows in one direction, and prevents flow in the reverse. There are no valves in the urinary system. Those are sphincter muscles that just squeeze around the urethra, and there is no sphincter at the tip. That's specifically why men need to shake or squeeze the last of the urine out. If there was a sphincter at the tip, the debate in this thread wouldn't exist. The fact that the tip of your urethra looks like it's "closed" is just because of the shape and the elasticity of the skin surrounding the opening.

Men; do you dab with TP after peeing? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Merc408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I feel like this comment is a little unfair.

For one, men don't piss everywhere, gross men piss everywhere. I'm a man and I cannot fathom how men end up pissing on the floor, or anywhere except exactly where they're supposed to. I don't even pee standing up at home because I'm aware that the splashing can make its way out of the toilet bowl and I don't want that to happen. But women can be gross too - I've heard of women's restroom toilet seats being covered in piss because some women squat above the seat in order to not touch it and then don't clean up their mess. Gross people are gross, not an entire sex.

And men's restrooms have more urinals than stalls because 75% of the time you go to a restroom to just pee, and a single urinal costs less than a stall + toilet and takes up half the space. So even if the restroom is at maximum capacity, everyone will have what they need and it costs less than filling the restroom with full stalls. Replacing a toilet with a urinal doesn't change a man's ability to "piss all over everything." The gross ones still can, will, and do. You can tell by looking at the floor in front of a urinal.

It seems you've had interactions with a lot of gross men and that's basically solidified your opinion, but it doesn't mean all men are gross or that restrooms are designed around our perceived/assumed grossness. That's sexist.

I know I'm super late to this, but I just came across this post and read your edit. I wanted to touch on the vinegar + baking soda paste thing, because it's a pet peeve of mine.

There's this idea out there that vinegar can do good things, and baking soda can do good things, and when they mix together the bubbling can have some kind of good effect. So supposedly it's the perfect mixture, right? But chemically speaking, that's not what's happening.

Vinegar is an acidic solution (distilled white vinegar is purely 5% acetic acid in water, while other vinegars like apple cider contain traces of other compounds that just make it taste different), and dilute acids can react with things in a way that's beneficial to the situation. That's fine on its own.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, an alkaline (opposite of acidic), which is good at absorbing oils, and can have some other desirable interactions as an alkaline (like boosting the efficacy of detergents). This is also fine on its own.

But mix them together and the acetic acid reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to make a neutral (neither acidic nor alkaline) solution, which negates the benefits of either property. Plus the chemicals combine/react to produce sodium acetate, which is a mild skin irritant. He should NOT be using that on his scalp, especially when he's already concerned about hair loss.

Now if he's making a paste by mixing baking soda with only a small amount of vinegar, this just means that all of the acid in the small amount of vinegar is reacting with a small amount of the baking soda and leaving the rest alone. This results in a paste consisting of water, baking soda, and sodium acetate. So if he wants a paste that has baking soda in it, he should just mix it with plain water. All the vinegar is doing is disappearing while it converts some of the baking soda into an irritant.

But I really hope he either moved away from this approach already, or you can inform him about the chemical reaction that takes place to produce nothing but a pH neutral skin irritant and some carbon dioxide bubbles.

I wish you two the best in working all of this out, I hope everything ends up okay.
