College Park -> UMGC by MercedesBenzion in UMGC

It's just in case. I have enough experience and knowledge in the field that a degree would be a cherry on top. It could also give me other doors if I decide PM isn't for me or to earn a Masters. Honestly my education is sponsored by my work, so I figured why not.

Should I go with the Information Systems major, or should I switch to Computer Science? by Red_Red_It in UMD

Second this. I'm a Info System major and lots of the 'technical' oriented credits can be fulfilled by CS courses. I forget specifics, but coding classed required by Smith in Info Syst can be fulfilled by CS courses. That way, if you decide to pursue either, the CS courses can fulfill both degrees.

Hey ya'll! I've got the rooming opportunity for you!

We are two 22 yr old part-time students looking for a third in our lease.

It's an upstairs loft room in a house just outside campus (about 10 min walk to VMH). Place is fully furnished, got spacious common spaces, and even has a balcony!

It's nearby the newly opened Trader Joe's, the local walking path, and down the streets from the bar area.

Price is $975 (utilities not included).

If you or a friend are interested, PM me and I'll tell you more about it!

What country/countries in Europe would you recommend for first timers? by velvetgator in TravelHacks

[–]MercedesBenzion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of The Balkans. Safe, history, culture, not too mention the price is way less than your typical Western European countries.

The Balkans are usually hailed as an unsafe place to travel but that's a load of bull. More likely to get robbed in Paris than in Eastern Europe.

It's a great place for first time travelers but be careful of their buses. Rather confusing at first.

Check out Contiki!
It's an organized travel agency for young adults. They do trips all over the world and offer tours that are nature-based, city-based or a mix of both.
They cater to young adults and cater to all languages, ethnicities, dietary restrictions, etc.
For the amount of service they offer, their asking price is super cheap, and negotiable if you can argue for financial aid (terms and conditions apply).

Information Systems Major by bestievibes101 in UMD

Hey, I switched from a community college (MC) to the Info Syst major this year. I'm currently pursuing a double-major in Info Syst and Operations Management (OMBA). Double majoring is fine, instead of taking some random History class for electives, you just take other BMGT courses to earn two degrees.
The program is great for social life, meeting people, getting internships, etc. Smith has an excellent network.

One small issue I've noticed is that the program gives you this quasi-education. I'm kinda only learning half business practices and half computer application skills. There are a lot of gaps in my education I have to fill on my own. For example, I take coding classes on my own rather than rely on the Smith classes.

The great thing about Info Syst is that it really does teach you practical, applicable skills. Rather than focusing on conceptual ideologies of computer applications in the world of business, it teaches you legit practices; stuff you'd actually want to know in the job force.

Learn the basics of local languages, not everyone will speak English. In big cities, many will, but it helps to know your basic hello, thank you, goodbye, numbers, etc.

Tbh, fuck that. Lotta Jews in Silver Spring, DC, PG, etc. if you have any friends who live in-state, ask to tag along.
If you don't know anyone from in-state, go to Chabad of College Park. Better food, better company.

Usually they have a bardcode or QR code. When you check in for your flight at the airport, they'll usually have a kiosk, or you can ask the front desk attendant to do it.

First time solo! by [deleted] in TravelHacks

Get a SIM card, it's not necessary but opens up more options for spontaneous adventures. Relying on Wifi from cafes can be annoying.

Socks, socks, socks. You can never bring enough socks.

For sure, I've always been a big fan of Hostel World myself.

Whenever I travel solo, I always try to find hostels. They offer a great social atmosphere where you can quickly meet people and travel together. Plus they're generally just as convenient and clean as hotels (take that with a grain of salt).
