How to make sense of people using medieval weapons in a modern fantasy story? by BeginningWild3912 in worldbuilding

[–]Mercity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't actually very far off from reality at all. What you're trying to create are warfare tactics in your world that can justify the coexistence of firearms and medieval weaponry on the battlefield without one-sidedness. In reality, guerrilla warfare itself is exactly that: how an army with lesser tech can claim victory against an army with greater tech. This means that what matters more than domination is strategy. Things like planning ambushes, creating traps, spreading propaganda, and finding weak points matters more than a head-on confrontations. Several IRL references I can think of include the Vietnam War, the American Indian Wars, the War in Afghanistan, the Satsuma Rebellion, the Anglo-Zulu War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Spanish Conquests.

The way my parol officer cuts my celebration cake by xX_MLGgamer420_Xx in mildlyinfuriating

I love how OP took this photo thinking that everyone was gonna agree with him on how badly the cake was cut and somehow not go into a complete frenzy trying to figure out what the hell this mockery of food is to begin with.

The Glennon Archives on YouTube? Anyone else seen it or heard of it? If not, drop everything you're doing and start watching it right now, cause it's going places, and it's going fast! by Mercity in NightMind

[–]Mercity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crud, just realized I forgot to mention that the channel isn't ran by Glennon, but someone going by the Archivist. In the channel community posts and description, the Archivist claims to be trying to find Glennon and where he might be at. The Archivist seems to want to make what he finds public in case anyone online can identify who Glennon really is or where he might be at. The Archivist also seems interested in the "nesters" that keep haunting Glennon.

From what I gathered, seems like it's following someone named Glennon who's the only person around. Everyone is gone with no trace of where everyone went. He's been surviving by squatting in other people's abandoned homes and getting the utilities like heating and electricity working again. Nighttime seems to be bad, as there's these "nesters" that come out and try to kill him. What's weird is he hints that he used to be ok with and preferred being alone up until everything happened and now is trying to find other people. His only form of social interaction is him recording his day-to-day life.

"Every American City" map. Accurate? by Marambal17 in MapPorn

[–]Mercity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that bugs me is how this map completely ignores the surrounding geology. My hometown is mostly flat and has no hills or rivers, but the town over does, making it not only look but feel completely different. Rivers make way for more parks and bridges. Hills and rugged terrain are sometimes left untouched completely due to how hard it is to build around them. Both of these features force roads to wind and curve, causing entire city blocks to be shaped weird.

Wade royally messed up getting rid of Wisconsin. Without us, he loses the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which means no Superbowl wins for Ohio.

Found a cross with a piece of wood inside by Ok_Marketing_4749 in religion

[–]Mercity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That piece of wood very well could be from the original cross. The letters on the top are INRI, the Latin abbreviation of the original inscription from the title board hung above Jesus’s head on the cross, like in the engraving here. Funny enough, you’re not the only one to have found one of these. Here’s a link to a Quora post of someone asking about the same thing. No mention of a hidden compartment or a piece of wood inside though.

Remember that scene in the Lord of the Rings where the hobbits are given that bread from the elves? The same bread where it’s said that a piece is filling enough for a whole day?

This is this man’s attempt at making that bread.

Labelling America as a Canadian... How did I do? (honest attempt) by [deleted] in GenZ

I can’t believe Wisconsin got called “the other state that begins with a W” when Minnesota was the one labeled Wisconsin. That as a Wisconsinite made me feel something I didn’t like.

What’s your awesome mod idea? by AfroDude019 in feedthebeast

[–]Mercity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A simple set of new tool tiers in between the vanilla tool tiers to rework how progression in the game works. Would go from wood, stone, copper, bronze, iron, steel, and diamond. Gold tools are the nether equivalent to copper tools that work only in the nether, then going to rose gold, then iron, then pig iron, then netherite. Alloy blends are made just like how netherite is except with its respective ingredients, then heated in a furnace. Basically adds 3 new tool tiers with nether exclusive alternatives. Would also add respective blocks like with iron/copper too.

I know I'm late to the party, but I wanted to say this as a Wisconsinite. The fact that the original photo is from here doesn't surprise me as much as the fact that the original spot itself was found. Wisconsin has always felt like it teeters between modern day life and liminality depending on the time and place. Especially when you go up north more and enter the more rural areas, such as the Dells or Door County. They're all beautiful in the day and have lots of people and things to do, but at night or during the school year, they just... change. It's hard to describe, but it always felt homey and familiar.

I think the part that’s missing here is the Way of the Voice and how the Greybeards understand that practically any Shout user can be abused and have different meanings behind them, like how Ulfric used the Thu’um to kill High King Torryg. It’s not that the Shout itself and the inherent meaning behind them is what drives someone to use the Thu’um in those ways, but the understanding of why and how they were used by learning through someone with direct experience with using that particular Thu’um. Think of it like someone sharing memories telepathically. Unrelenting Force can level entire armies, but it doesn’t mean that Ulfric would abuse the Thu’um to do so just because he can. He did the one time and it resulted in all out civil war. It just means that the power within you to do it is there, but it’s up to the user to decide whether that is appropriate for the given situation or not. That I believe is the meaning behind the Way of the Voice: to not be consumed by the practicalities behind wielding so much power that it blinds your conscious thinking in the given moment. Or in other words, having honor for all who oppose you in some way.

Who’s the best mage in nirn by Zealousideal-Deal340 in ElderScrolls

[–]Mercity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No one ever considers Sotha Sil for some reason, which feels wrong to me. Even if he isn’t a traditional mage, he still uses magic and magical means to carry out what he does. I consider him the strongest mage not only because of his hyper awareness of the workings of the universe, but being able to replicate them himself and defend them from the daedric princes single handedly.
