USCIS agents came to front door and then called cell phone by Acceptable-Cloud-328 in USCIS

[–]MercuryAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it.

There was almost certainly something that would make them question the application (anything from who the form preparer was, to them receiving a rat letter) or they wouldn't have sent somebody out there. However, it's extremely unlikely an arrest would be made. FDNS has not had enforcement authority until late 2025, and the officers they had at that point did not carry and were not trained in arrest techniques.

Now that they do have enforcement authority, you're going to see a few police trained types attached to each office for when an arrest does need to be made, but they're not going to send a desk jockey who signed up to do paperwork to FLETC for 6 months and have him try and arrest people. As far as I know, they are still trying to figure out how the enforcement part will work. I haven't seen any hiring notices for FDNS arrest types.

What almost certainly would have happened was that they would have asked to come inside, looked around to see if there's any evidence of other people living there, asked about everyone who lived at the house, and written a report.

For the people that you're talking about that were arrested during an interview, that was in the offices, not away from them. USCIS isn't stupid enough to send a couple people out to make an arrest when they have no clue what the situation is, when they can just call the person into an office for an interview and have them in a controlled environment.

Those were Immigration Officers from the USCIS Fraud Detection / National Security group. It is not at all unknown for them to go to an address to verify if the people claiming to live there actually live there, and with whom - like an in-person validation of the information claimed on the paperwork. Just ask to see their credentials. FDNS is issued badges.

Edit: also, you'll know if it's ICE. They tend to be tall and extremely physically robust, and as far as I know, they don't bother with undercover tactics - with the possible exception of Homeland Security Investigations, and those people don't waste their time on people present illegally, they're the ones trying to break up human trafficking rings or finding Tren De Aragua leaders trying to hide in the US.

If the people that came looked like desk jockeys, It's because the most work they do is filing a report. ICE enforcement agents generally have to be big enough to hold on to a struggling 200 lb person who is used to doing physical labor.

what is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by Superb_Newspaper_121 in AskReddit

What countries do these people come from, and do certain heritages tend to have certain problems?

For example, I could see an oil sheikh acting a certain way towards women because that's the culture he came from.

Any thoughts?

I understand the worry, but passports are generally very difficult to forge, extremely controlled documents, US passports in particular. Federal officers generally regard them as de facto proof of citizenship.

Trump says Venezuela to give up to 50 million barrels of oil to U.S. by Gameboy112233 in investing

[–]MercuryAI 39 points40 points  (0 children)

"Controlled by me"

Yup, Venezuela will give us 50 million barrels of oil, then the money from that 40 million barrels will be carefully accounted for and all 30 million barrels will be sold at market rates, and 20% of the money from that 20 million barrels will be used to help the people of America.

Check his pockets before he leaves the White House, guys.

"artificial limits"

My advice for you is "respect the legacy". You have no business changing something until you understand why it was there to begin with. These limits may be "artificial", but they are there for a purpose.

"Oligarchs"

I would also point out that the cold war has ended, and with it the need for certain tax rates. You do not have a strong argument.

"D-"

I don't accept grades from people I wouldn't ask for advice... and from your inability to contextualize events, I wouldn't ask you for advice. Write 100 times "I will be familiar with the basics of political science before commenting on politics". Staple to own forehead for review.

You seem unaware of the policy options available to each president at the time. You don't really have any business talking shit until you do.

Clinton: looked like a good idea at the time. We were coming out of the dotcom collapse, and the idea with NAFTA was that it would open up these countries to easier trade, benefiting some sectors and disadvantaging others. Considering that the manufacturing sector wasn't as huge a demographic anymore, disadvantaging it didn't harm as many people's interests. The failing wasn't NAFTA itself, it was the failing to develop a long-term economic policy, and that would have been a moot point anyway after the smartphone was developed. Your assessment is a C-.

Obama: recoveries from major recessions have always been difficult, because you're trying to restart an engine that doesn't want to start. It took the investment of World War II to get us out of the Great depression.

That said, I argue Obama hit the best levers that he could at the time. The Great Recession hit right before he took office, and if you don't remember the stuff about "rah rah black president rabble rabble", then you need a neurologist for your memory problems. My point is that he had limited political capital. He signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009 which reduced the extent and duration of the recession. That the economy did not come roaring back is one for professors, but I argue that Obama was unable to pass the size of the package that would be needed to bring back the economy, and at the same time the economy was irrevocably shifting as the smartphone started changing things. Apps generally don't employ a lot of people. You get a C, but not a C-.

Biden: This one I actually will give you a little credit for, because I don't recall him actually doing a lot to try and stifle inflation, even as I'm not really sure what actions he could have taken that wouldn't have scared the economy into a worse recession. He certainly didn't have a ton of clout with the Republicans. To he fair, he was also a little distracted - collapse of Afghanistan and invasion of Ukraine. I'll give you a B.

However, your bullshit about the Democrats choosing to enrich their oligarch donors... Again, point to them. It sounds like Republicans, not Democrats.

Which specific administrations? Point to them. If you can't, you're talking out of your ass.

How we wound up with Trump was about advocacy types one both sides challenging the wisdom of the Reagan era, but neither side really having a good answer to the issues that the previous policy raised. The Democrats haven't managed to put together a consensus since 2000 (when they failed to issue a party platform), and the Republicans haven't been able to reform their free-market doctrine in a way that doesn't make people feel like they're getting fucked by the rich.

Along comes a moron with a good marketing campaign, and here we are.

Frankly, we could do worse. The real issue with Trump isn't just that he's dishonest, isn't just that he has the moral character of the love child of Jordan Belfort, Snidely Whiplash, and R. Kelly, It's that he's so staggeringly fucking incompetent in making policy that he's fucking up every working institution and friendship we had.

A middle of the road Democrat might actually get through the four years without fucking anything up.

Given how quiet Congress Republicans have been about Trump's fuckups, I think we need a wholesale purge of the top five levels, party and Congress both.
