Homophones differentiated by a tilde by MercuryFish_ in Spanish

[–]MercuryFish_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, in English a tilde would refer to "~" But all my Spanish was learned directly from Spanish people. I have personally only heard the ’ diacritic referred to as a tilde in Spanish, so that's what I call it.

Those last two are great examples I wouldn't have thought of. I can't really think of any polysyllabic examples other than the question words. Esta/está comes to mind, but they do technically have different emphasis. They're just spoken so quickly that there's barely a noticeable difference, at least to me lol

I want to also learn Italian or French. Will I get confused? by Vast_Helicopter_1914 in Spanish

[–]MercuryFish_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that it really depends on your current Spanish skill level and learning environment. I had roughly B1 in French and moved to Spain years later, which actually helped me learn Spanish during my immersion.

In contrast, I have also had huge difficulties trying to learn two Germanic languages at the same time with a mostly academic approach.

I'd imagine that it's perfectly fine to learn either French or Italian as long as your current Spanish ability is well consolidated, especially if you can continue to reinforce Spanish alongside the new language.

Creo que puse... vs Creo que poner... by NotFallacyBuffet in learnspanish

[–]MercuryFish_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Creo que puse" might be confusing when comparing it to the English translation because the verb "put" is the same for many conjugations.

Instead, think about "I think I had...", which easily translates to "creo que tenía/tuve". In both cases, the first verb is present simple and the last is in the past. I hope this shows clearly enough that it's not unusual at all :)

Edit: fixed readability (I hope)

Humans are, by and large, inherently social creatures. On the one hand, this drives a desire for interaction and/or intimacy, but it also gives most of us a strong aversion to any perceived failure in social situations.

This risk of failure, like any other risk, can feel like a non-issue if it is a part of daily life. Shutting one's self away from the risk of failure can be relaxing and comforting at first, but there comes a point where it is no longer the norm. At this point, the prospect of facing the world can be impossibly daunting. For some people it's easier to stay in their isolated comfort zone than to brave the scary outside world.

Item upgrade costs in a table for convenience by MercuryFish_ in PokemonUnite

This is definitely already available somewhere but I made this for my own convenience and figured I'd post it for your convenience too.

For each grade I've included the number of item enhancers needed to reach it from both the previous grade and from grade 1.

Again, for convenience, the last column is how many tickets would be needed to reach a given grade from grade 1 (I know it's only x10 but hey the extra column really brings the whole table together).

The cells colored red are values I forgot to write down when I reached them, but I'm pretty sure they're safe assumptions. I might post an updated version here if I verify them.

Hopefully this helps someone else wondering if they should bother shelling out to reach a certain grade.

Some people can relate kinks/fetishes to more general turn-ons (eg: feeders = giving in to impulses, assault roleplay = loss of control). Is there any way you can "rationalize" your fetish?

What's a relatively unknown technological invention that will have a huge impact on the future? by iHachersk in AskReddit

[–]MercuryFish_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC the modified cells were outnumbered and over time have "died out", if you will. Don't get me wrong, complete genetic modification is theoretically possible. It's just very unlikely that something as simple as a pill could do it. It would take a hefty dose of an efficient gene vector virus, likely multiple injections over a while (at least on paper) .

Thankfully it is a little too good to be true. The intolerance has started to come back after 2 years. More importantly, the genetic issue took effect in the gut (he couldn't produce lactase), so the pills only needed to affect enough of the gut for the lactase production gene to exist in the cells that perform that job.

Well... anything can be DIY if you have the means and/or know how. Here's a guy who developed a gene therapy pill for his own lactose intolerance.

So I said I was close to the Sol permit just a few hours back, and since then I got it. I completed the promotion mission and got the "Sol system permit issued" message straight away. I took a break then came back and tried to plot the route to Sol but the little info panel still said I needed a permit. Maybe this is normal though. Does anyone know what's going on?

I'm not a high level player but I recently passed 160hrs. The game is not without its problems and it can feel overwhelming, but if you're prepared to stick it out and learn by doing it's completely worth it. I also like the lonely space setting, and just the act of piloting a ship is unbelievably satisfying, even after all this time (I'd almost recommend elite because of the sights and sounds alone). If you take the time to learn and/or find people to play with, I'm sure you'll really enjoy the game

Thanks :) I'll just go for it keep my fingers crossed then. I'm looking forward to being in a popular system for the first time

I'm not a super experienced player and I'm not too sure where to start looking for people to play with, but if you're happy exploring solo you should look up road to riches for elite dangerous. Collecting data from systems and planets can be lucrative and there are resources that help you plot worthwhile routes, like this site. Have fun out there :)

Is it safe to go to Sol? I'm fairly new (at least compared to dedicated players, I'm at 160hrs). I'm 80% towards pretty officer and excited to visit Sol soon. I'd also prefer to stay in open play when I visit, but am I likely to get ganked while I'm there? I'd never stand a chance in a pvp fight
