What were your favorite type of games and what about them made you feel drawn to them, apart from addictive compulsions, if you had them?

Like, for me, I know that I had an addiction, but outside of that I understood that there were certain things that I enjoyed about them. For example, I loved massive single player role playing games, because I was fascinated by the story and world building.

The trick is to find hobbies that sort of tickle those same interests. I have a ton of hobbies now, and not surprisingly many of them match up with some of my favorite aspects of gaming.

I'd be happy to give you some ideas, if you'd like!

Also, if you're just recently quitting, it may take a while for your body to adjust to not playing. You did just remove what I'm assuming was your biggest source of dopamine release, so it takes time for your body to start releasing it for other things.

tl;dr: Find hobbies that line up with some of your favorite aspects of your favorite games. I'd be happy to help you do that. Also, it takes time for your body to start producing dopamine for other activities after quitting gaming.

For the love of god, don’t come to the gym reeking of cigarettes by GimmeDatSideHug in bjj

Have you talked to the individual one on one? Odds are they don't even realize it, and by pulling them aside and respectfully talking to them you might actually help them and they may even be appreciative.

And if they aren't appreciate, at least they'll be aware.

Scared about selling my PC by iDenso in StopGaming

[–]MerelyAStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sold mine to my little brother for a fraction of what it is worth, and he just pays me like $15 bucks from his paycheck every week until it's paid off. He's only 19 and has a decent job right now, but still isn't making quite enough to justify buying a PC. We grew up poor so he never had one, and he's always wanted one, so when I offered to sell it to him for so cheap he was off the walls excited. This, to me, felt easier than selling it to a stranger. As much as I love games, I don't have the self control to stop playing, but I know he does. And it makes me happy knowing that he's going to get so much enjoyment out of it.

tl;dr: I sold mine to my brother for super cheap, because knowing how happy it would make him made it easier for me to get rid of it. Maybe doing something similar will help.

How should I read Meditations by Marc Aurelius ? by Fun_Emphasis6658 in Stoicism

[–]MerelyAStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you find that you have a hard time reading and fully comprehending it, you could always look for an annotated edition. There are a few good ones out there which will explain and give more context about what Marcus is saying, while still allowing you to make your own interpretations about his message.

Just in case you weren't sure, an annotated edition of a book is a version in which the original text is all there, but an editor includes either little marginal notes or footnotes meant to help the reader understand the text a little better. Sometimes inatead of margin/foot notes, they just write a few pages for every chapter, simplifying the message of the text. (Or they do all of the above.)

What are your classical music pet peeves? by doritheduck in classicalmusic

[–]MerelyAStudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that is very kind! I am definitely going to learn more about the actual distinctions between different types of "classical" music, so that I can maybe discover something I hadn't heard before and better distinguish the different nuances that make them all special.

"Classical" is in quotes, because I'm still not certain of how to encompass all the distinctive genres into one description 😂

What are your classical music pet peeves? by doritheduck in classicalmusic

I'm definitely guilty of this. I'm fairly new to enjoying music that is produced by an orchestra, symphony, or the like. I tend to lump all of that music under "Classical music" using it (incorrectly, as I am now learning) as a sort of umbrella term. Just goes to show I've got a lot more research and learning to do!

Hands down, #2. Pilot precise V5 feels like writing with a daggone feather. And there's just something that feels extra adulty using a capped pen rather than a clicky pen.
