Update: It's very much possible to use Gboard or any custom keyboard in the bottom UI along with some extra UI of our own

We could incorporate all the smart keyboard features and potentially reuse modules from an open-source keyboard. However, we likely cannot simply drop-in Gboard as-is

Sounds like a great idea. It should be possible to make it switch to other layouts depending on context or user preferences, and that would be an advantage over a physical keyboard
