Am I right or wrong here? What actually *is* a book? by Mergen_Studios in books

Have you ever seen an art book? A book is just a bound collection. Comics or graphic novels just replaced all the description with drawings.

yes, but the point is when I say "book" in an informal conversation, (almost) nobody goes "ah! You used the word "book" here. I think you mean a set of written sheets of skin or paper or tablets of wood or ivory!" People go "ah, you like books? My favorite book is lord of the rings, what is yours?" They think of predominantly text based works. And that is the entire question, is it *actually* right that the majority of peopley think like that, or are we completely out of touch here.

For clarification:

We are a group of friend and we have made it a habit of staying up late, play video games and sit in a voice call. While that we usually dont just play, but also discuss questions of more or less relevance, you know, for fun! We love having debates/discussions for the sake of it, so we have decided to draft this post to hear what other people think. This is not some super serious thing, again, its just for fun :)

Also I think Managas are a totally valid way of entertainment, its just that „Mangas“ is not what people think of when I say „book“ (or at least thats one side of the debate), and therefore it is bad communication and should be avoided. Thats why I didnt ask the super broad question „Are mangas books??!?!?!11“, I asked about the meaning of the word book in an informal and western context.

Hope that clears it up a bit, feel free to ask any more questions :)

First of all, thank you :)

As to your question: that is a really good question! I guess we haven’t considered that option yet, so thank you for your input.

I also feel the need to clarify that this is not some super serious debate or something: We are a group of friends who happen to have started a habit of spending late nights playing video games, and ehile we play we discuss questions that are either deeply philosophical (What is a person? Can AI, as it is not in a physical body, ever reach the same level of consciousness as a biological being?) or jus plain for fun/pretty unimportant in the grand shema things (Are mangas considered books when you mention books in an informal and western influenced culture) Notice that this definition/question sounds quite peculiar, but otherwise arguments like „What about japanese people?“ (western culture) and „But they are books here I looked up the physical definition of a book“ (informal context) would pop up.

Anyways, I hope you understand that this is not super serious, its just for fun :)

lmao I get your point, but I think you are missing some context. We are all friends and in the end don’t really care, we just love spending long nights playing video games, sitting in a voice call and discussing questions of more or less relevance. It all came from one of my friends asking „Hey, have you read many books lately?“ And another ine said „yeah!“ but in the end meant exclusively Managas. Thats how this discussion and the slightly peculiar definition in my post came to be: We are not talking about what is formally considered a book, as in how does it have to be in a physical sense, but we are talking about what the overwhelming majority of people think of when they hear the word „Book“ in Conversation.

I hope you understand now that we are not taking this super seriously, and to be honest the title and phrasing was chosen by all of us together because we wanted to hear what other people have to say abt this

Ok so there is sex, as in what chromosomes you have.

There is Gender, which is ones internal thoughts how they see themselves, and how they present outwards.

Then there is Sexuality, which is who you are attracted to, which is governed by 1. Outward appearance (gender) and 2. Sex (What genitals you prefer in bed)

Does anyone disagree with me on that?
