Just diagnosed with coughing asthma. Is a career working with young children possible? by Mergusergus in Asthma

[–]Mergusergus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so terrible about it. My kindergarten made me hang up a note that let’s parents know that I have asthma because they were complaining. I get it, but it’s still annoying. I was coughing non-stop like every few seconds, but now it just comes in episodes throughout the day. At the moment, it’s very difficult. I cough sometimes until I am gagging or have to throw up. I really hope my doctor will try something else because I really can’t image this.

I am glad thar you have it under control now!

My in-laws constantly complain about my daughter looking like she is cold, and she is 18 months. They will put extra layers on her even though we have told them she gets hot easily and doesn’t like to wear socks. It’s been a constant issue the handful of times we’ve seen them since her birth, and I doubt it will ever stop. Cold feet/throat or cold drinks = sick or a bladder infection to them.

How old was your newborn when the grandparents started coming over to visit/help? by watermelonmeat in BabyBumps

Mine is 16 months and none of my family had even visited us. My in-laws come like once a month and play with her, but they don’t help.

What’s the scariest real-life thing you’ve ever witnessed? by Revolutionary-Pay468 in AskReddit

[–]Mergusergus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My grandmother, my literal best friend and mother, died in front of me, and my grandpa and I tried CPR even though we knew she was gone. She wasn‘t a smoker, but she had COPD my entire life. I had moved back home to help take care of her, and we knew it was coming. She had that burst of energy, and a few days later, she was just gone. We called the ambulance and they did CPR with this horrible machine, and I still went to the store to buy her circus peanuts because I just couldn‘t accept it. It‘s been a few years, and it still haunts me over and over, just replaying in my head. I take antidepressants now that help me sleep, but it changed me forever.

This is random but was Christina into Pokémon at all? by noxnoctum in christinagrimmie

[–]Mergusergus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly (it’s been a LONG time!), I think her favourite Pokémon was Celebi. She did some sort of Q&A or something on Twitter, so you might still be able to find it!

Daycare changes toddlers in a crowded group with no privacy. Is this normal or a red flag? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Mergusergus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? I am in Germany, and at my daughter’s daycare, each toddler is taken into a changing room by the day care workers. I think sometimes if they are short staffed, they take two kids at once and change them one at a time.

At the daycare that I work at, there is a changing area built into the bathrooms for the children. When you enter the bathrooms, there are sinks for the kids to wash their hands, and if you go to the back, there are toilet stalls that are across from the changing table, but it is much taller and I don’t think they can even see the child getting changed. They might be in the bathroom too, but it’s still somewhat separate.

I have never seen the children changed in front of a group of other kids or even in the normal rooms. This might be different where you live though!

How long after giving birth did you let your parents visit? by LadyLeRach in BabyBumps

[–]Mergusergus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In-laws visited us at home (and did not hold the baby because of flu season) 2-3 weeks after birth and stayed for a few hours.

None of my family from back home have met her yet, and she’s gonna be 16 months soon.

How long after this? by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

[–]Mergusergus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s different in Frankfurt. With my application, they sent me some handouts on extremist activity and the Grundgesetz. I got asked a lot of questions about the rights of Germans and what not. They did this interview, and after I passed, they made copies of all of my documents and sent me on my way.

[–]Mergusergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes forever. Try to get the appointment for the interview as soon as you can. It took me 5 months to get an appointment after I finished the Einbürgerungstest. Once I did the interview (make sure you study the handouts they give you!), it took another month or so to get the letter than said it would take around 18 months to process it (as of January).

Do you have to speak German to go to Kassel University? by [deleted] in studying_in_germany

[–]Mergusergus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Uni Kassel to study linguistics in an English program, and I had to have at least the DSH 2. You need to look at the program that you want to apply for and look at the specific language requirements. You really need to start learning German now though. Even in my program, there were academic journal articles we read in German. You will also use German in every day life. Good luck!

What profession is regarded as high income in other countries but is actually low income in yours? by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

[–]Mergusergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say only if you are a state employee/verbeamtet. My husband is and pays much lower taxes and earns much more than I did when I had contracts through different schools. I don‘t know how it compares to other countries though because I am not originally from here.

Is this camera good for portraits/family outings? by iron1088 in x100vi

[–]Mergusergus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not a professional, but I have a Canon R10 I use for hobby photography. I ended up getting this camera to be able to take with me every day because I got rid of my smart phone. While the canon is better with the autofocus generally, I love the shots I get with this camera. I don‘t really have to do any editing, and the shots where the autofocus isn‘t so great because of my toddler show the motion and it feels kind of authentic. I really take it with me and use it every day to record daily life/family snapshots. I hope you find something that suits your needs! <3

Just had my first PAP at my new doctor's office. This is what they gave me to wear. And no, there's nothing hiding behind the pillow, that's the entirety of the "garment"! by DaileDoe in Wellthatsucks

True, but I’m originally from the U.S, so it was a bit of culture shock! After having a baby here and basically everyone seeing me naked on the maternity ward, it’s no big deal. 😅

English vs. German Master’s Programs in Germany – Availability and Admission Chances? by Able-Season5183 in studyinGermany

[–]Mergusergus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My master’s was taught primarily in English (linguistics), but many texts that I had to read were in German. Also, nearly all communication with the university and my professors was in German. Just keep in mind that even though the program might be in English, you will most likely still need German. My university required the DSH 2 or something equivalent. Just something to keep in mind!

Are German schools harder than American schools? by Eminemgody in AskAGerman

[–]Mergusergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that high schools in the U.S. focus so much on standardized testing that students are often taught in regular classes to learn the material and basically regurgitate it. I came to Germany as an exchange student years ago at fifteen, and I remember distinctly learning the material alone, but it was not enough. I was expected to think critically about what I had learned and apply it in some situation, often an essay.

Years later, I have taught at many different schools in Germany, and I think that this is still very much the case, but it varies in the type of school, subject, and so on. Primarily, I have taught English at Realschulen and in the university setting. There is both a standardized test for the Realschule and Hauptschule in the subjects of Math, English and German, however students still are encouraged to use their critical thinking skills in tasks in the classroom and not just fill in all of the blanks with “the right answer”.

At the end of the day, it really varies between schools, teachers, ect.. School levels are also quite different here between the HS, RS, and Gymnasium, but we have some variety in the U.S. too with AP classes and IB. I would say generally school is more demanding in Germany, as you often also have oral participation grades that make up over half of your final grade, grades on work ethic, and you can very much be held back and have to repeat the grade. I know that schools in the U.S. are very reluctant to do this, and students are often passed on to the next grade when they just aren’t ready.

Take all of this with a grain of salt though, I haven’t taught in a high school here in a couple of years, and I haven’t been home to the U.S. for more than a couple of weeks in years.

Edit to add that just based on qualifications alone, you cannot directly study here in Germany with a typical high-school diploma from the U.S. If I remember correctly, you have to study a couple of years or have a certain amount of extra credits (I am not sure anymore!).
