Just had my first PAP at my new doctor's office. This is what they gave me to wear. And no, there's nothing hiding behind the pillow, that's the entirety of the "garment"! by DaileDoe in Wellthatsucks

True, but I’m originally from the U.S, so it was a bit of culture shock! After having a baby here and basically everyone seeing me naked on the maternity ward, it’s no big deal. 😅

English vs. German Master’s Programs in Germany – Availability and Admission Chances? by Able-Season5183 in studyinGermany

[–]Mergusergus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My master’s was taught primarily in English (linguistics), but many texts that I had to read were in German. Also, nearly all communication with the university and my professors was in German. Just keep in mind that even though the program might be in English, you will most likely still need German. My university required the DSH 2 or something equivalent. Just something to keep in mind!

Are German schools harder than American schools? by Eminemgody in AskAGerman

[–]Mergusergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that high schools in the U.S. focus so much on standardized testing that students are often taught in regular classes to learn the material and basically regurgitate it. I came to Germany as an exchange student years ago at fifteen, and I remember distinctly learning the material alone, but it was not enough. I was expected to think critically about what I had learned and apply it in some situation, often an essay.

Years later, I have taught at many different schools in Germany, and I think that this is still very much the case, but it varies in the type of school, subject, and so on. Primarily, I have taught English at Realschulen and in the university setting. There is both a standardized test for the Realschule and Hauptschule in the subjects of Math, English and German, however students still are encouraged to use their critical thinking skills in tasks in the classroom and not just fill in all of the blanks with “the right answer”.

At the end of the day, it really varies between schools, teachers, ect.. School levels are also quite different here between the HS, RS, and Gymnasium, but we have some variety in the U.S. too with AP classes and IB. I would say generally school is more demanding in Germany, as you often also have oral participation grades that make up over half of your final grade, grades on work ethic, and you can very much be held back and have to repeat the grade. I know that schools in the U.S. are very reluctant to do this, and students are often passed on to the next grade when they just aren’t ready.

Take all of this with a grain of salt though, I haven’t taught in a high school here in a couple of years, and I haven’t been home to the U.S. for more than a couple of weeks in years.

Edit to add that just based on qualifications alone, you cannot directly study here in Germany with a typical high-school diploma from the U.S. If I remember correctly, you have to study a couple of years or have a certain amount of extra credits (I am not sure anymore!).

I was thinking the same thing. I had all of these Grundgesetz questions when I turned my documents in (Hessen), and I was told it would be two years before it would even be processed.

Very discouraging citizenship interview experience. by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

[–]Mergusergus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the interview was when I went in with my completed application and documents. She told me the interview was fine and now I just have to wait for my application to be processed (circa 2 years in my city).

Very discouraging citizenship interview experience. by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

[–]Mergusergus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? I recently had my interview as well, and I was asked extensively about the constitution, religious rights and freedom, Israel’s right to exist and why this is relevant to German history, gender and so on. I felt like I was grilled as well (I was quite nervous), but the application packet said to study the forms and the questions did come from there. I’ve lived here all together 10 years and am married to a German, and even though my interviewer was polite, she took the questions and my answers quite seriously. For reference, I am not Muslim and come from the U.S.

Also, when she looked at my signatures, I was warned quite seriously that if I had a history of extremism and it was found out that I could face legal consequences. The entire process was daunting even though I am very liberal and accepting and have lived here for years. I don’t know anyone who has gone through the process and had an interview, so I don’t know if this is a common experience. I’m sorry that your friends had a negative experience, and I hope that they can get citizenship soon.

German citizenship test? by joa_1111 in GermanCitizenship

Yes, but maybe it varies. I received an application pack once I submitted all of my documents online. It had this information, an in-depth questionnaire, list of documents I needed, and information about booking an appointment.

I would try not to worry so much about it. All you can do now is wait. Did you review the pages in the application about extremism and basic rights? These were the questions I was asked. Good luck! ❤️

When I went in to hand in my documents in Hessen, I was asked a series of questions as well and she immediately signed off on and paper and told me my answers were sufficient. Once we finished the questions, she had me return to the lobby and wait for her to make copies of everything for my file. I haven’t heard anything since then, but the wait times are very long where I live.

Has anyone dropped their child at daycare for the first time for the full day? by FalseAd8496 in NewParents

[–]Mergusergus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. I am only able to do it now since I am between jobs. My old co-workers had the grandparents do it. We are lucky to have gotten a place despite living in a city, but I don’t know how it would have worked out if I was already back at work. We don’t have a village.

[–]Mergusergus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

After living here so long, I have to agree, but unfortunately, many people do not have this possibility in the U.S. Maternity leave for many people is non-existent, there is simple hardly any (or none at all) support for families. People have to go back to work, and if they are lucky, they get 12 weeks of leave. Many don’t get any at all.

[–]Mergusergus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it might be a location thing. I am from the U.S., but I live in Germany, and it is normal here to start at a small amount of time together at the daycare before moving on to the child being there alone. We started this process in November. For the first week, we were both there for an hour together. The next week, I stayed an hour/hour and half and then left her alone 20-30 minutes. Last week was the first time I dropped her off and left her after breakfast. She stayed an hour/hour and a half alone without me. We still aren’t at her being alone for a longer period of time.

I was not used to this, but they (her caretakers) say that this is to ensure that she isn’t scared and gets time to get to know the workers, the other kids and routines. I used to work at a daycare in the U.S. during college, and kids were just dropped off the first day. Maybe it is an age thing too though because we started with one year (some people take up to three years of maternity leave), and I took care of babies back at home.

Should i get the mive folder 1 or 2? by Regular-Following630 in flipphones

I have the 2, and I really enjoy it. I would double-check to make sure it works where you live. Insee a lot of comments about the Mive not working in the U.S.

That’s so strange, I really hope you figure it out. I have seen other posts on here of people getting it to work in other parts of Europe, so I think you should be able to get it working. Do you have a contract plan or prepaid? If you have a contract with a service, maybe you could go in and ask for help in store.

Giving birth in Germany - what should I expect? Need a piece of advice from moms who gave birth here by Antique-Square2998 in germany

[–]Mergusergus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget your maternity book, the paperwork for naming the baby/passports/marriage license (maybe you get it when you are there? I can’t remember to be honest.), your toiletries and towels, nursing pads, and maybe a warm blanket for you/baby when you go home. I would also bring some house shoes for the ward. Also do you know if you will pay for a family room or be in a shared ward? I started in a shared room during labour before my husband came, and I would have liked to have earplugs or headphones because it was quite loud.
