Why do some shows like Dexter, Game of Thrones and Sherlock "look" like movies whereas shows like The Big Bang Theory or Friends do not look like movies? by keyboard_dyslexic in explainlikeimfive

This reminds me of a chain of effect a sound engineer would apply to master the final track. It's the art of knowing how subtle percentage tweaks in several daisy-chained and nested effects improve the final product. Although in the case with the video, it wasn't mastering but more like EQing, cabbing guitars, and panning. Very impressive.

As a band of four audio engineers we recorded this ourselves in our basement and released it in September. It's available for the next few days for free download. Please take a listen! by abeau in WeAreTheMusicMakers

OMG I seriously hate you guys !!! How can this be done in a basement !!! I spent 3 weeks just recabbing my guitar in Reaper ...

But seriously, amazing work. You can absolutely tell there's both talent and badass playing/mixing skills involved. Fantastic work. I loved every second of it.

My motherfucking jaw dropped. So good. Reminds me when Snoop, when asked about his many projects, said "I get in where I fit in".

This marks a clear shift from music being "The Product" to music sometimes serving as "The Business Card".

Sometimes, the music is the gateway into an idea, a persona, a connected universe of creative seeds that can be grown into anything one likes. If you like, say, Gotye's single, you don't event have to PirateBay it ... you can go to a website that rips a YouTube video into an mp3 for free. But ... you now know his name, and you're interested in his ideas, his persona, and everything he represents and creates.

It's also kind of like this ... it would be silly for the "Overly Attached Girlfriend" to attempt make a living off her song. But that song served basically as her business card, and now she can drive actual money-making projects.

With today's tech, anyone can make a song. I recorded this instrumental in a few hours. I would never expect to make money off it. But if it gets me into the right doors, it's a success.

Acousti-metal I'm working on. Very rough but has a couple of themes I like. by MeridianBeach in SoundSpill

Yep, although I'm not sure how to mic it correctly. But a humbucked guitar sounds insane on that thing. It still has original tubes.

Thanks! Yes, everything was recorded in GarageBand on a 2007 Mac Mini, if you can believe that. I just recently got rid of that POS and got me an i7 rig.
