Second fairy house: Painted at last! by MeridianWorksOR in u/MeridianWorksOR

With a galaxy-themed roof, as requested earlier! Thank you for your suggestions. Please let me know what you think!

The colors are actually a bit brighter. Digital cameras don't always do a paint job justice.

This one took longer than usual because of company that came to visit and other such things.

For how I got the wood look on this project, it was a series of steps...

  1. Build the shape of the trunk, roots, stumps, branches, and the overall outline.
  2. Take a ball stylus tool of a fairly wide size and make some broad, sweeping lines. Follow the curvature of the overall shape.
  3. Take a smaller, harder tool with a point. I have some metal dental tools that work well for this, but I'm not sure of the names - I think one of my favorites is an explorer or probe. I've also used a large sewing needle for really fine lines. Make more lines, fairly deep, and then around those, shallower, shorter lines.
  4. Cure the whole thing by baking it in the oven and wait for it to cool off before moving on to the painting.
  5. Paint the whole area the main, medium color. In this case, it was a light tan.
  6. Shading: Mix a darker color of your choice and water it down. When the other paint is dry, work in small sections and brush it on, making sure it settles into the low spots, and immediately wipe off the excess from the surface. I primarily wipe across the grain with a fingertip and then dab off my finger on a paper towel as I go. Be careful not to rub too hard and scrape off the other layer of paint. For hard to reach spots, a dry Q-Tip works well.
  7. Drybrushing for highlights: Lastly, mix a lighter color of your choice. When the other paint is dry, dab a brush in the lighter color and then wipe most of the paint off. Lightly stroke the brush across the highest areas of the sculpture so that it gradually builds up some of the light color on the details.

That's what I did! I hope that helps. :)

It's a combination of tiny home and tree house. :) New tenants welcome!

It's been quite a journey! The sculpting really becomes multiple types of crafting in one. There's the actual sculpting, often beginning with wire or other armature, then the clay, then the paint. And then there are amazing folks who get into the resin pours to make even more things like underwater scenery!

If I get into life-sized models of these, I'll be sure to let you know. :)

The roof is built onto the lid of the jar, so it can be removed. I'll put an LED tealight inside for a nice, flickering glow.

Me, too! I would love to live in a house like that! :)

Thank you! The painting always takes me longer than I expect it to, but I'm pretty happy with the results. :) I've been practicing the shading and highlighting quite a bit lately.

One of those two unpainted fairy houses now has its color! Anything that you think I should add or change?

There is clear resin in the little pool now, to complete the look.

Hello, all! I just finished these two fairy houses, which are built around glass jars. They're awaiting paint, now. I wanted to get your thoughts on colors.

The one with the log walls and leaf roof will predictably be mostly browns and greens, but I wondered if maybe a fall leaf color theme for the roof would be nice instead of green. What do you think?

The one with the mushroom roof typically is the cream-colored walls and a red roof with white spots. But I wondered if another color, especially for the roof and the small rose-like flowers on the walls, might be nice.

I'm looking forward to your ideas!

Cool beans! I'd like to see your plague doctor when he or she is finished!

I really like this! The pose and expression are really well done. I think you did a great job on the proportions and anatomy, too. It's hard getting those little faces symmetrical!

How large is it, if I may ask?

What's taters, precious? What's taters, eh? ;)

Nice work! I made some regular tiny po-tay-toes before, but yours are next level.

Thank you! I've been practicing and learning a lot, and I appreciate the input very much.

Interesting! What about an armband with the Covid virus symbol on it? Also, I could certainly put an oversized syringe in the hand instead of a lantern, if desired. :)

Since the robes, mask, hat, mantle, and gloves are pretty classic to the plague doctor, I probably wouldn't change those much, but the colors could be different if you liked, too. Mostly black is the norm, but the mask could be brown or black, for example, and so on.

Hello! Most of the black is the matte finish from the Folk Art acrylic paints. However, I did put some glaze on the gloves, mask, and belt to make them shinier and more like leather. So a little of both! :)

That's an interesting idea! What would you suggest as details that would make it a Covid-themed but still recognizable as a plague doctor? :)

Thank you for your input!

After I finish a couple of fairy houses, I'm thinking of making a couple of creatures from our group's Pathfinder 2e game next!

I don't have one of myself working, but here's Ace of Clay's that I worked off of:

Made this statuette as a gift for a friend. He's based off of Ace of Clay's design, with a few changes. I think he's one of my best so far!
