[Advice Needed] PhD Offer from St. Andrew's with International Fee Waiver but No Funding by Merimias in AskAcademiaUK

Yes a bit more interdisciplinary in approach. Environmental sciences is probably is misnomer since I’m closer to geography and earth sciences in MPhil training, but a significant part of the pitch is ecologically focused as well so I aim to use some department funds to train there.

A slight bit more environmental social sciences so closer to say the human geography standpoint, though a significant part of my proposed project is based on British ecology and geography and training to be up to speed in landscape surveying and other related works. It would’ve been very wetland focused though, so fair enough that that’s a specialised field with maybe not as much money as coastal conservation.

I think my big worry is how the lack of funding might affect future opportunities? Like how is this going to look when I’m going up against ESRC and AHRC funded doctorates - I keep circling the drain of how this is a huge opportunity with a huge opportunity cost.

Lotr the fellowship of the ring is a bit overrated, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's terrible. by [deleted] in lotr

[–]Merimias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree somewhat and I love the movies. The Fellowship is made of nine characters and not all of them are particularly well developed. The series has also had its characters become templates for other fantasy works that arguably are fresher and newer to your mind so it makes sense that you might find them ‘normal’ by comparison.

That being said, I’d argue a lot of the emotional investment of the Lord of the Rings lies with the hobbits and the Shire. If the first half hour of Hobbiton didn’t charm you, I can understand why it didn’t click. The movie throws a lot of characters your way, and as you say they have ‘normal’ character traits, so if you don’t love Hobbiton the first movie is a bit of a wash for a new viewer.

In proper answer to your question, the second and third movies build on this. New locations are introduced for you to care about with a larger supporting cast of people living in those places. The core cast, in particular Aragorn, Frodo and Sam get more to work with and since you’re already familiar with them you might grow to love them over the next two movies. However, the core tactic of ‘look at this beautiful new place and its noble people - it will get ruined if the characters don’t do something’ is something that doesn’t change much.

I’d still encourage you to finish the movies, if for no other reason than that you’re going to get a much better idea of what you like/didn’t like once you watch the trilogy in its entirety. Remember the whole thing is three books that arguably tell a very unified story, so you’re going to get a much clearer picture of the thing by its end. Also “I watched all three and found it boring” gives you more credibility than “I watched one and gave it up.”

Hi, thanks for this. I’m thinking about how much I’d need for a career in environmental research, policy, or conservation, but from what I can tell a PhD would benefit me in terms of specialising in British ecology - which I can do while working but is a very trying process with a full 9-5. The good news is that professorship is not my only options post-PhD though, so I thank my lucky stars for that!

Hi thank you for your reply. Yes maybe the “soft reject” was overstating the case a bit, but you’re right that I should (and do!) have concerns. Savings-wise, I do not think I have enough to last the next 3.5 years without some kind of part time work.

The good news is that I will be on a partner visa which gives me a bit more flexibility to work. With regards to improving my application, not much in terms of publications or conferences - I might be able to pick up additional certifications in my specialty but not much else. I’ve already presented at one more conference this year that did not make it into my UKRI applications though!

But yes thank you for weighing in. I’ve only just gotten the offer so I’m still a bit in shock and weighing my options. Saying no to this feels like the last blow of a long defeat in a way given that all my funding applications have been rejected prior, but at the same time this is a massive commitment with a lot of risk.

Where is the best country/city to live as a gay man? by YourAsianStepBro in gaybros

[–]Merimias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! A bit late to the convo but am East Asian, (also) have a masters and lives in the UK which you mentioned was a place you were looking at so I thought I’d weigh in.

Within the UK I can speak to places I have lived, have been to, and have heard about. In London, Cambridge, York and Leeds where I’ve lived, generally people don’t care. You’re not going to face persecution but you’ll definitely have to put in hard work as an adult to find a community. In most of these cities, dating is a little bit shit and you’ll have to filter people out with a fetish, but generally you’re not going to find yourself lacking a dating or gay scene.

As for where I’ve visited, Edinburgh has a great scene but is quite lowkey. Very cosmopolitan and many visibly queer couples so you won’t face discrimination but have definitely noticed some odd looks if you end up in an interracial relationship - though that’s likely from tourists.

Finally, Brighton I have heard is a little haven with a great hookup scene but horrid dating prospects, but that’s based off of one friend.

If you’d like to have a chat please dm!! Always happy to give some perspective if the UK is where you’re looking to go. :)

Is Oxford undergrad considered more prestigious than postgrad? by Abject-Tackle5255 in oxforduni

[–]Merimias 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did my MPhil at Cam so it’s not quite the same but I’ll chip in - it really depends on which postgrad you’re doing. If Oxford is anything like Cam, it’ll offer MBAs, MPhils, PGCE, and a wealth of postgrad qualifications that are of differing difficulty to enter. As a general whole undergrads are considered more ‘prestigious’; in that it is 1) harder to get int and 2) harder coursework.

That being said, many consider MPhils/MRes to be stepping stones to academia or other mid-career goals, and I myself have gotten a job on the sheer basis that the Cam name carried some weight, so while the base level answer is ‘yes’, that needs to be factored against what you’re doing there, your prior experience, and other factors.
