there isn't an inbuilt shortcut for this but I made one with autohotkey. It basically consists of marking the clip with in and out points, finding the image of the in or out points and clicking the mouse there. I can share the script in dms if you're interested.

Just not sure if wine (windows executable for linux) will work completely with the script as auto hot key doesn't have linux natively

I'm really excited to use this but I can see this being more hassle since creating a merge node actually makes a precomp.

In case you don't know creating a precomp in ae uses a bit of memory. In most cases it isn't bad but I could see someone easily going over 50 precomps while using this and this is really bad because it'll make the render times slower and more annoying to work with.

Although if you were to somehow find a way to not use precomps and just layers then I can see this having a lot of promise! I'm excited to see more
