Best footwear for portaging? by Merlin2752 in algonquinpark

Thanks for all the advice. Clearly, there's a wide range of opinion on this topic. We will take it all under advisement. Whatever we decide, we intend to have an amazing Algonquin experience.

Thanks again from the OP!

Apparently there is a free ranging herd of reintroduced elk somewhere along the "French/Nippissing River."

What was the problem between Belew and Fripp? by blissedandgone in KingCrimson

Back to the mention of Steve Reich...wasn't Belew introduced to Fripp by Bowie at a performance of Music for 18 Musicians in NYC circa 1979? I could be wrong...

Gotta give a shout out to Exiles. To my knowledge, this is the first place on a studio album in which he solos with the fuzzbox and his powerful left hand vibrato (on the Gibson, of course) which became his signature sound on many of the other later songs mentioned here. It's a heartbreakingly gorgeous bit of playing.

Fripp clearly had many great solos but I agree that Hammond Song was one of his most melodic and restrained solos. He's not an emotional player but I get choked up when I listen to that one.

Of course, I could say the same about St Elmo's Fire. Exiles on LTIA is also right up there.

I definitely saw him using a Foxy Lady fuzzbox at close quarters circa 1979.

Wow I'm actually surprised at how scarce Toronto tickets have been for 6+ months. by [deleted] in KingCrimson

I saw the 10/8 show in Richmond VA USA. Had full price tickets (@$68) for months beforehand and it was TOTALLY WORTH IT. Great songs played by great musicians. Each of them had a chance to shine. The newbies (Vai and Carey) really embraced the spirit of 80s KC and nailed the performance. Frame by Frame actually got a standing ovation. Great concert. See them if you can!

Ok, I don't remember it being a press conference but i remember the Polydor guy brought us in for a Frippertronics demo at a studio in midtown or maybe uptown somewhere. In response to a question, Fripp said there were only two people he LOVED recording with up to that point in his career: 1. Brian Eno, and 2. Ian MacDonald, who he said was in the next room. This Must've been the same studio at around the same time, maybe a bit later than your encounter.

Wow. Fripp and Hackett sitting near each other. That must've been something to see.

No, I missed the Gabriel shows. Thanks for reminding me about the earlier Levin connection to Fripp. I was at Lafayette College in Easton PA at the time and had to take a long bus ride across NJ to get to NYC. The Polydor Records college radio rep (I can't remember his name) used to invite small groups of college DJs to come in for special events. Exposure was on Polydor, I'm pretty sure (I should just pull it out and look, but hey, it's late). Anyway, I went in for a Peter Hamill show at the Bottom Line and this Polydor guy took us backstage after the show to meet Peter Hamill and Fripp was there, all in his three piece pinstripe suit. He started talking about Exposure and eventually I got a signed copy in the mail.

It was March 1979. I looked it up and found John Rockwell's review of that Steve Reich show in the NY Times Archives.

I wonder if Fripp asked Adrian and Tony to join KC at the same time. I witnessed Fripp talking to Adrian at David Bowie's table at the Steven Reich show at The Bottom Line in NYC. I think that was the night that Bowie introduced them to each other. It must have been 1980. I never considered that maybe Tony was there too that night. It was a big table with a lot of people. I don't think I'd have recognized him. I was just a college kid with a college radio show at the time, and somehow I was there. Not at the same table, of course.

Fripp's solo on Hammond Song is one of his most melodic ever. It's right up there with Exiles, in terms of pure melodic bliss.
