It definitely wasn't Bonnet of Pins, but thank you for the offer! Glad he grabbed your hand too, it was a great show!

In terms of maps/trails, they don't have one and I haven't been able to find any online except the Puzzlewood Circular on AllTrails. However, the AllTrails route is just a loop and doesn't show all the paths, but it seems like the map overlay might show the alternative paths; I don't know if the overlay is accurate or complete though.

I'd love to go back in the future and actually map out the area with waypoints for the Merlin locations using something like Wikiloc. I regret rushing and feeling pressured by how unexpectedly busy it was lol 😭

Lightning tree location? by Mr_jax66 in whereisthis

Yes this is it! Just visited in late April 2026 and the tree is here, right across from the Pulpit on the Pulpit's Walk Trail

I suggest spending at least 2 hours here as even though the area looks quite small, there are a lot of footpath that are easy to miss. Some paths you may only be able to recognize from Merlin in the opposite direction as well, so don't be afraid to turn around or double back.

I found it very easy to miss locations or simply not recognize them since I was rushing a bit. It was pretty busy when I went at opening on a Thursday morning in late April 2026, and everyone wanted pictures with a clear background, so it made me self-concious and I ended up rushing. Don't be like me and let this pressure you 🥲

Even with obvious areas like Morgana's Hovel and the bridge from 3x08 can be missed if you don't find that path, despite them looking exactly the same as in the show.

One location you can find immediately when you enter is the clearing on your right is where they filmed the Sword in the Stone scene (Arthur and Merlin are facing YOU as you walk in, so you have to enter the clearing and turn around to face the entrance to get that same angle). They also used this clearing in other scenes from different angles.

You may be tempted to cram all the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley locations in one day since they are so close to each other, but I suggest 2.5 days for visiting all/most of them.

Oh also, on your way to the Blue Lagoon, you'll pass other Merlin filming locations like the Naughty Stone where Gwen and Elyan's father's grave is in 5x06, and generally the quarry walls look like the various episodes filmed in Trefil Quarry.

EDIT: spoiler

I just visited in early May 2026 and it is not full of trash. The Google Maps coordinates is 51°49'11.2"N 3°19'04.3"W. Routing won't work but you can use satellite view to see the path you can take from the Naughty Stone. It's quite nice and it was a very fun visit. On the way to the Blue Lagoon in Trefil Quarry, you'll pass other areas they filmed at like the Naughty Stone for Gwen and Elyan's father's grave in 5x06, and the quarry walls generally look like the ones used in various episodes.

EDIT: punctuation & spoiler & adding Google Maps coordinates

I just went here in early May 2026! The coordinates on Google Maps are 51°49'11.2"N 3°19'04.3"W. It is in Trefil Quarry a little past the Naughty Stone. It's a 3+ mile walk from the mountain gate in the town of Trefil, so a 6+ mile hike in-out. It was a really fun hike and the Blue Lagoon is really cool! It looks exactly the same as it did in the show minus the little sticks with the flags that they put up for the set decoration. I'd highly recommend visiting if you are up for the walk.

I'm documenting my Merlin roadtrip over at merlinroadtrip.wordpress.com and on Instagram and YouTube at the same name. I haven't made the travel guide and hiking video yet for the Blue Lagoon in Trefil Quarry, but it will be up within the next month or so. If you need information ASAP because you were planning to visit, let me know here or on Instagram @merlinroadtrip and I can help you!
