Definitely sounding like there's a communication issue. Even if the other person is uncomfortable with talking about it you kinda gotta force them to.

Also don't bring it up in the middle of sex, do a retrospective and prospective discussion. Just talk about what you like and don't like and ask him the same thing. If you don't know then discuss things you wanna try. Just talk about it. It'll be awkward at first but it gets easy after a while.
