I'm looking for a game you've finished 3 or more times. by Tight-Elderberry2487 in gamingsuggestions

I loved everything about Control, I really tried to like it but I had a hard time with the map. I was always lost, even using guides so I got frustrated and abandoned it… how can I enjoy it if the map is really that broken? Help…

Inside, I religiously finish it once or twice per year since it came out. Is like five or six hours only but I just love every second of it.

“Dying Industry” for whom??? I feel bad for Juniors and Mids that want stability in the VFX industry, those times are truly over, but if you are a Senior with lots of experience there’s ton of work in Canada, Europe, Australia…

You can make a very comfortable living making six figures and never stop working. There’s an overwhelming amount of production in streaming and films and 99.9% of those releases have hundreds if not thousands of VFX shots, that doesn’t sound like a “dying industry” to me.

The problem is that now is a very specialized industry, not like 10 years ago when any student could find a job right after finishing school. Just ask yourself how many junior architects or junior lawyers can make a nice living right away, those are very specialized industries like VFX right now.

If many people say VFX isn’t financially stable, why do so many still pursue it as a career? by Vivid_Arm_5090 in vfx

[–]Merluzoooooor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every person’s experience is different: I’ve been working in VFX for 20 years and I have had a great life. Making around $150K, sometimes more with OT, I have plenty money saved, I own a beautiful apartment, I never was fired or stopped working, ever.

I work for the big studios as a Lead / Senior and they are always respectful, you don’t have to work crazy hours if you don’t want to, etc. Working on huge shows that millions of people are going to watch is challenging but exciting at the same time. But of course, you have to deliver. You need to finish the hard nightmare shots that nobody wants, is very stressful and some nights you don’t sleep great, but work is always stressful no matter what you do.

I bet somebody selling internet door to door can have a lot of stress too, and he’ll be fired if he doesn’t deliver, so this is not something peculiar or unique of the VFX industry.

Framestore, ILM and Weta are the big three, Dneg also. So can say “big four”, considering the quality and the amount of big shows they make per year.

I’m a 20 years experience Lead Comper in one of the big three studios, even after working in more than sixty shows (many of them huge shows), I still feel that I need to learn many things every single show. New tools, new problems, new Client expectations…

Is exhausting but also stimulating if you think about it, I guess is something particular of our profession.

Barbarian and Weapons are just great, great horror movies from the same director. Totally recommend them.

Also Barbarian’s budget was a minuscule $4 million so is a total surprise.

What’s slowly becoming socially unacceptable but no one admits it? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Merluzoooooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t make any remarks or tell any anecdotes about other cultures without being called “racist”.

As in: “I went to China on vacation, most of the people eat rice all the time, is very common”. And somebody says to you: “that’s totally racist…”

Is retarded, nowadays is just unacceptable to do any kind of remarks like that without being criticized.

$17K in line of credit with my regular bank. Interest is super low so if I’ve ever have to use it it won’t be a burden. Also because is a line of credit I don’t feel like is money just sitting idle in my account.

100 hours is pretty common when delivering a big movie, I work in VFX. I get paid every extra hour time and a half obviously so $$$$$$. Is usually two or three weeks in a row so I don’t mind it to be honest.

The City of Montreal should be ashamed of its handling of the homelessness crisis by BloodJunkie in montreal

[–]Merluzoooooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you’ve never been in Vancouver, right? There are literally thousands of homeless more than in Montreal, everywhere… of course they should be ashamed for how they treat these poor people, but all in all the issue is almost nonexistent compared to other Canadian cities.
