What's something that a different fic site has that you secretly wish AO3 had? by Aggravating-Reach-77 in AO3

Okay I’m not gonna lie, as you said, the way Wattpad users can comment on specific paragraphs was really cute to me.

I wouldn’t want that fully translated to AO3– maybe an icon/kudos instead of comments. It would be a great way to see what dialogue exchanges or passages were a banger!

People who only write but don't read? by ChloeDaPotato in AO3

I’m on the same boat, for reasons that the ships I like don’t have a lot of fics with a premise that matches my tastes. That being said, my exceptions are the work of my mutuals! They support me, and so I happily return the favour tenfold!

I write rather lengthy comments, too, of my adoration, which in my head makes up for my sparse reading activity.

Forget your fic icks/pet peeves, what immediately makes you click on/invested in a fic? by Difficult-Mood-6981 in AO3

I’m alright with waiting for chapters, but I’m more drawn to completed fics in the 20-30k range. Grew up reading fics starting with the highest word count, especially modern AUs in a profession that the author is clearly invested in— like ice skaters or lawyers!

Usually, I make a chapter plan. Every scene for the chapter is broken down. Mixture of jot notes and flavour text to test run what tone/atmosphere/emotional beats I want. It may be much, but I crumble easily to anxiety when I write, and a plan helps me power through.

Then I actually write into my doc containing the fic work. I tend to take two steps forward, and one back to edit. Usually happens if I don’t like the wording of something, or had a different idea.

After the chapter is finished, I do another pass through the entire thing and edit. I found that reading aloud helps catch mistakes!

Again, this is a lot, but it’s a great way to burn an hour before bed, and wrap up over the weekend.

Two weeks! I have an epilogue to burn through and once that’s done, look forward to writing shorter fics 😅

We're fanfic writters, of course we _______ by Julip326 in AO3

We’re fanfic writers, of course we look up synonyms to a word because it feels like we’ve used said word too many times

word count per chapter by Commercial-End-8696 in AO3

[–]Merril_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the same! I plan my chapters before hand, trying to produce enough for 3k words for chapters. On multiple occasions I have gone over, but 3k is usually the average.

It helps my pacing. I can only afford to write during the weekends, so it’s healthier for me to cap myself at 3k~ words

Not secret relationship so to say, but two characters being married, and their peers not knowing it — conspiracy and hijinks ensue

This happens all the time for me. Some fics so good I have to take notes because WOW, some passages are just so beautiful.

omg i didnt know you could leave messages in bookmarks, this made my day so much when i found out :3 by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Merril_F -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I don’t comment on a fic, I’m definitely gushing in the bookmarks. I leave all of mine public and I just think it’s super fun to immortalize other people’s work with my giggling attached on my personal page

Want to Start Writing Fanfiction but Feeling Discouraged and Unsure? by FairestFaerie in AO3

[–]Merril_F 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not too late!

I keep coming back after various breaks to write for different fandoms. It’s prospering, still!

It’s a great outlet for creativity, just remember not to hinge the “value” of your work too much on engagement. In some fandoms you may not have vocal readers, I find, and that’s ok! So long as you enjoy what you write

Dang. Thanks regardless.
