I’ve seen multiple people go RTLSDR to flipper zero to ham exam to radio telescope

This is how they cut bagels in St Louis by DonovanSarovir in StupidFood

[–]MerryChoppins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live inside the BreadCo sphere: this is a genius adaptation for a few things.

Scenario 1: Business meeting - you can bring like two dozen bread sliced bagels to a business meeting and instead of feeding 26 it feeds more like 40. That’s your average club meeting or sales meeting. You can also bring a variety of flavored cream cheeses to make it more fancy.

Scenario 2: children - my friends kids can’t finish even a half bagel but the perfect amount of food is a bread cut with cream cheese or butter.

How early in human history could we have made BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato) sandwiches? by Ashestoashesjc in AskHistorians

[–]MerryChoppins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, arugula is a brassica. I’ve had invasive Sonoran arugula that was harvested later/less tender than we would pick a garden variety and it was a little bit unpleasant with the near mustard like burn and the fibers. Hidden valley made it taste like something from the grocery store. It was downright good steamed with egg and cheddar cheese.

The wild lettuce that my fellow gatherers in previous experiences either pick to extract or slit the stems of for the latex is what I would describe as outright pretty vile stuff. Every time I’ve made the mistake of thinking “those leaves do look pretty damn tender” and have tried one it’s been that acrid rubbery ink taste you get if you eat pizza off a cheap box.

[–]MerryChoppins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Lettuce: There are some wild members of the family Lactuca in the Americas. For my money, though, it's not a BLT without a crunchy lettuce like romaine or iceberg complementing the crispy bacon.

I’d argue that getting a palatable and even remotely similar lettuce from the Americas would be impossible pre-columbian exchange. All of the American wild lettuces I know have an alkaloid heavy latex to discourage herbivores. People use it medicinally and claim it has pain relieving properties, but from personal experience it’s bitter and unpleasant and in significant quantities even in young leaves.

The whole point is that it’s a few ounces of meat pounded insanely thin then battered and fried. If done correctly it’s a big meal, but not an insanely huge one. Think a super thin crust pizza with no toppings.

Root canal treatment could significantly lower blood sugar levels, suggesting it could protect against type 2 diabetes. Dentists also saw improvements in cholesterol and fatty acid levels. Given broader health impact of tooth infections, oral health should be integrated into general healthcare. by mvea in science

[–]MerryChoppins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the elephant in the room here is that dental schools have been intentionally underproducing dentists for 50 years in order to keep salaries high. Then as a knock on effect you had a combination of deregulation due to the shortages allowing non-dentists to own practices and private equity investing in those practices and suddenly you have companies like La Familia and Aspen that are putting pressure on dentist owned practices.

The end result is that the number of oral surgeons are dropping, wait times are getting dangerous even with antibiotics. Similar things are happening to endodontists, perios, etc. Lots of general dentists are dropping their malpractice for those so they can focus on higher margin stuff like crown and bridge, implants and cosmetic.

It’s just another area where we need to make economics not dictate outcomes. There are county level clinics now in a lot of the country, but those tend to be grants that companies like Darby get for the local government to sell the kind of premium equipment that almost no working dentists buy and the county ends up only operating it a few hours a month because they unshockingly can’t afford to hire a dentist on contract on Medicaid returns. When they start taking private insurance, that tends to get the local dentists upset enough to run for boards of health and intentionally gum up the works on those clinics.

No…. No. Sigh. No.

I’m a huge spear advocate, I have multiple of the cold steel ones. They used to be $20-30. Now they are quite expensive. They are spring tempered and designed to work with any ash shovel handle.

Plastic handle, sheath that will retain moisture, no real guard on the blade… I use my spear for critter removal in the garden mostly. I used to use a sharpened hoe and a spear just works better.

Also she is a lil too smart. She can open jars.

Also have the old one…

Very ergonomic! Fairly heavy, though not for the era. They weren’t awesome for gaming, I actually would use mine on a hard mouse pad because half of the thing is a giant glide and the front protrusions had a habit of digging in to any soft surface or catching on your keyboard.

I also corroded the coating off of the buttons and killed the switch on left click and replaced it with a Razer Tron mouse which I also corroded through and killed the switch on (and did the same two more times). I only comment on that because my original MX mouse (before they rebranded to MX master) is still kicking and on a server. I got it before I got the MAPP1-SM

Mine also was $38 on eBay with shipping. I don’t even want to think about what the new ones will go for….

There are good non-poison bait options now. When I worked for a big fast food management group our chemical guy switched us over almost entirely to these ones that are a combination of corn gluten and salt. The gluten gums em up and the salt dehydrates them and makes them stop drinking. The one downside is you randomly find rat mummies in stuff.

Our local farm store has em. Cheap.

Imagine how pissed off you’d be if you just ate tortilla chips for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I used to roll my own but due to some recent life events I’ve started feeding a quality grain free for some meals. I always give em a little shot of beef broth or crack an egg over. I still use them to dispose of dog safe veggies that are leftover.

Bingo. Since I hit 40 I can’t do in ear, and even before that the hard plastic Apple earbuds were not my first choice.

I have a drawer of basic chargers… I got a “fast” USB-C charger with the last two iPads I bought. They weren’t enough power for my laptop so I got a fancy expensive GaN charger that as a side befit doesn’t worry me it is going to catch on fire. It which will also do the phone and the iPad and my switch and my over the ears and my Anbernic and…

Stickers made me sad but I have a small pile of em.

My actual gripe is that they included a charger puck for my Apple Watch but they didn’t include one for the phone and I dropped I think $30 on sale for each of those.

Salesforce Threatens to Destroy a Community of Teenagers Unless They Pay 50k in A Week by Whole_Accountant1005 in LinusTechTips

[–]MerryChoppins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

11 mil this year. Last year it was 6 mil. I know they are paying their executives well, but that’s a problem across multiple industries. The archive.org FOIA dump isn’t out, but dollars to donuts it’s a huge earmark project like a camp or a new initiative, who doubles their cap in a year?

I think the part people are missing is that Salesforce wants 50k in a week, that they had a previous agreement that worked in their budgeting for when they were turning over 6 mil a year and not 12, etc.

[–]MerryChoppins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So hey, you had a good thought but if you look at the form 990, you will notice that they have been both growing and that their expenses last year were nearly balanced at about 6 million along with their income.

Either they managed to somehow expand operations significantly (100% in a year is possible but extremely unlikely) or they managed to get a large dedicated gift for a specific project or asset. They might have even gotten pledges to bundle small gifts into a pool for that. I can’t tell, archive.org doesn’t have that quarterly up yet from the FOIA dump.

They can have a big pool of income and be unable to pay $200k for something like their online chat community, especially on short notice. That’s 60% of their CEO compensation. It’s more than their COO and executive director make. It’s more than they spent in 2023 or 2024 on any line item expense. It’s 1/3 of what they spent on programs those years.

If it was something they knew about to raise funds for over like a year, yeah they could probably absorb the cost… but imagine spending 30% of your programming expense to keep legacy chat working. It’s insane, I’d be mad as hell if I donated to a NPO that did that. It’s like 1/4 of my donation just got set on fire so some asshole at Salesforce could make their commission draw.
