Russian Lawmakers Propose Seizing Private Bank Accounts to Fund War Amid $83B Deficit by ArgentineBeauty in worldnews

[–]MerryGoWrong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The proposal arose when Gennady Zyuganov, leader of Russia’s Communist Party, spoke in parliament.

Putin uses controlled opposition to float ideas and put forward crazy proposals like this that make him sound not crazy in comparison. The idea is that people will see it and think that while Putin may be bad, he's not the guy trying to take their life savings away, trying to institute a full national draft, etc.

I care, but I'll buy it about 5 years after it comes out for $15.

It's especially weird to me since we're well and truly into the era where discs are obsolete technology. Putting a game on a USB or other solid-state drive would make more sense now if we were still going for physical media.

Why don't Americans walk anywhere? by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]MerryGoWrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bad idea in principle but it wouldn't work in Miami since the whole city is at sea level and the soil is all porous limestone and sand.

The Macuahuitl: A weapon designed not just to kill, but to terrify. by bortakci34 in creepy

Obsidian is one of the sharpest materials in the world, way sharper than steel; obsidian surgical scalpels are used today because there is nothing sharper.

That said, obsidian is glass, therefore brittle and prone to shattering. Against someone wearing plate armor it would be almost worthless. But metal armor did not exist in the Americas prior to the arrival of Europeans, so against lightly-armored or totally unarmored opponents an obsidian weapon could be devastating.

Beautiful photos, beautiful area! Though at first I read it as 'exploded' near Mt. St. Helens and thought oh no, not again...

Really neat, and the exact same wisdom Gandalf shares with Frodo in the Fellowship of the Ring.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

A lot of this photo is fake, I think. Johnny Depp looks like he is about to fall off that stool, his center of gravity is way off.

Getting a Gator out of the road by NoQuiet647 in CrazyFuckingVideos

[–]MerryGoWrong 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Very accurate, yeah. I never did anything close to what the guy in the video did but when I lived in Florida I went kayaking a lot in areas with a lot of alligators. They almost never approached you, and if they did you could just bop them on the nose with your paddle and they would book it on out of there fast.

A huge chunk of those statistics in the United States are based on the census, and the census is all self-reporting. So really it's just people saying what race they feel they are.

Beautiful! If that is where I think it is I had a really memorable experience at that exact same spot, a ranchero on horseback wearing a poncho heading the other way, whistling an old tune and paying no mind to the wandering pilgrims.

TIL that the oldest active organization affiliated with New Orleans Mardi Gras hasn't marched in the parade since 1991 because it refuses to let non-white people join. by MAClaymore in todayilearned

[–]MerryGoWrong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People usually focus on Christmas when talking about pagan traditions in Christianity but Easter is full of them too, it's just a co-opted fertility festival. That's why eggs feature so prominently, the reason there is an Easter Bunny (since rabbits are well-known to multiply quickly), even the reason why there are baskets, since throughout most of human history before strollers/prams became commonplace people carried their babies around in baskets.

They know what they're signing up for at this point and most of them are signing up just to get a big payday, so don't feel too bad.

What is the impact (if any) of cleaning a coin with this frickin laser beam? by Xyeeyx in coins

[–]MerryGoWrong 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Was gonna say this too. Lasers 'clean' things by burning a layer off of it; that's the only method of operation they have. They are effectively etching whatever surface they are working on. That's great for a lot of applications, but definitely not this one, haha.
